Editor’s Notes Blessings ,
In the 6th month the angel visited Mary with glad tidings. We are in the 6th month
of the year and my prayer for you is that your business and ministry will receive a
divine visitation THIS MONTH.
We have once again expanded our coverage in response to your various emails, letters
and comments. This month we welcome on board as columnists for our business
pages Five wonderful female writers. From Atlanta Georgia USA – Margie Randle-of
Miracles Network ,Donna Lang , a social media coach, and Nina Ijere-Otuka– a busi-
ness coach, from Tanzania the radio show host of Dove eyes and personal matters
consultant Chinwe Kalu and from U.K Oma Edoja – a seasoned business mentor
In this edition you will get to read their first articles for Acumen in addition to
reading all the events adverts for June 2012 we received. Our goal in putting together
these business pages is to INFORM,EDUCATE & EQUIP you.
We are created to worship God and we have included in our business pages the col-
umn entitled-The hymn and the story behind it. We will share with you the history
behind the authors of each hymn and why today they still mean a lot to us as we
sing them. The first hymn we will be looking at is the hymn-IT IS WELL WITH MY

The Redeemed Christian church of God of North America (RCCGNA) is holding its r
national convention in Dallas Texas this month and The shadow of the almighty
Ministries is opening up a branch in Atlanta this month also.
We are excited by the move of God and how he is using
Acumen Magazine to bless people and how people are being a
blessing to us and opening new doors for us.

ACUMEN
MEAN?
ACUMEN ; (ˈækjʊˌmɛn, əˈkjuːmən)
The word is a Latin word from the
1530s which means "a point, sting,"
hence "sharpness, shrewdness," from
acuere "to sharpen" .
ACUMEN is the ability to judge well;
keen discernment; insight
ACUMEN means quickness, accuracy,
and keenness of judgment or insight.
BUSINESS ACUMEN is keenness and
quickness in understanding and
dealing with a business situation in a
manner that is likely to lead to a
good outcome.

I got started on a full skin care regimen in
my early twenties and now in my thirties,
not only do I have a radiant and even
toned skin complexion, I also have a

Horatio Gates Spafford
1828-1888
Born: October 20, 1828, North Troy, New York.
Died: October 16, 1888, Jerusalem, Israel, of malaria.
HYMN HISTORY:
This hymn was written by a Chicago lawyer, Horatio G. Spafford. You might
think to write a worship song titled, 'It is well with my soul', you would indeed
have to be a rich, successful Chicago lawyer.
But the words,"When sorrows like sea billows roll ... It is well with my soul”,
were not written during the happiest period of Spafford's life. On the contrary,
they came from a man who had suffered almost unimaginable personal tragedy.
Horatio G. Spafford and his wife, Anna, were pretty well-known in 1860’s
Chicago. And this was not just because of Horatio's legal career and business
endeavors. The Spaffords were also prominent supporters and close friends of
D.L. Moody, the famous preacher. In 1870, however, things started to go wrong.
The Spaffords' only son was killed by scarlet fever at the age of four. A year later,
it was fire rather than fever that struck. Horatio had invested heavily in real estate
on the shores of Lake Michigan. In 1871, every one of these holdings was wiped
out by the great Chicago Fire.
Aware of the toll that these disasters had taken on the family, Horatio decided to
take his wife and four daughters on a holiday to England. And, not only did they
need the rest -- DL Moody needed the help. He was traveling around Britain on
one of his great evangelistic campaigns. Horatio and Anna planned to join Moody
in late 1873.
And so, the Spaffords traveled to New York in November, from where they were
to catch the French steamer 'Ville de Havre' across the Atlantic. Yet just before
they set sail, a last-minute business development forced Horatio to delay. Not
wanting to ruin the family holiday, Spafford persuaded his family to go as
planned. He would follow on later. With this decided, Anna and her four daugh-
ters sailed East to Europe while Spafford returned West to Chicago. Just nine
days later, Spafford received a telegram from his wife in Wales. It read: "Saved
alone."
On November 2nd 1873, the 'Ville de Havre' had collided with 'The Lochearn', an
English vessel. It sank in only 12 minutes, claiming the lives of 226 people. Anna
Spafford had stood bravely on the deck, with her daughters Annie, Maggie, Bes-
sie and Tanetta clinging desperately to her. Her last memory had been of her baby
being torn violently from her arms by the force of the waters.
Anna was only saved from the fate of her daughters by a plank which floated
beneath her unconscious body and propped her up. When the survivors of the
wreck had been rescued, Mrs. Spafford's first reaction was one of complete
despair. Then she heard a voice speak to her, "You were spared for a purpose."
And she immediately recalled the words of a friend, "It's easy to be grateful and
good when you have so much, but take care that you are not a fair-weather friend
to God."
Upon hearing the terrible news, Horatio Spafford boarded the next ship out of
New York to join his bereaved wife. Bertha Spafford (the fifth daughter of Hora-
tio and Anna born later) explained that during her father's voyage, the captain of
the ship had called him to the bridge. "A careful reckoning has been made", he
said, "and I believe we are now passing the place where the de Havre was
wrecked. The water is three miles deep." Horatio then returned to his cabin and
penned the lyrics of his great hymn.
The words which Spafford wrote that day come from 2 Kings 4:26. They echo the
response of the Shunammite woman to the sudden death of her only child.
Though we are told "her soul is vexed within her", she still maintains that 'It is
well." And Spafford's song reveals a man whose trust in the Lord is as unwaver-
ing as hers was.
It would be very difficult for any of us to predict how we would react under cir-
cumstances similar to those experienced by the Spaffords. But we do know that
the God who sustained them would also be with us.
No matter what circumstances overtake us may we be able to say with Horatio
Spafford…
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul!
It is well ... with my soul! It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It Is Well With My Soul
Commentary
The lesson to be learned from this beautiful song is that no matter what happens
to us in this life, no matter the pain and suffering the sorrows or joys,
“God causes all things to work together for good to those who love
God” (Romans 8:28).
Consider it this way; either God is using His power to make something to us,
perhaps only providentially; or God is allowing something to happen – some-
thing that He could easily stop if He wanted to do so. In any case, God is in con-
trol.
There are times when bad things happen to Christians. Often, those bad things
are not because of our sins, or because God makes them happen – some bad
things happen just because (indeed, “time and chance happen to us all” accord-
ing to Ecclesiastes 9:11).
And when those things happen to us, how will we respond? Will we blame God?
Will we lose faith in God? Or will I simply say that it is well with my soul?
Let us consider a Biblical example. Jeremiah had plenty of reasons to get discour-
aged. He was beaten by mobs, cast away from society, hated by kings and princ-
es, rejected by his own people, and even cast into a deep pit of mud and refuse
(Jeremiah 38:6). But through all of it, he spoke some comforting words in
Lamentations 3:32-28.
Notice especially the last phrase, “Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that
both good and ill go forth?” And do we not also read that God causes the rain to
fall on both the evil and the good man?
Through all of the evil and all the suffering that this world has to offer, let us
never forget that God is always there to hold our hands.
Even though children may die from accident, through no act of God at all, or we
may lose a job, or a house may burn down, or illness may afflict our frail human
bodies, we will always have the comfort and hope of God to lead us through the
trials. It reminds me of what was written in Psalm 37:23-24,
“The steps of a man are established by the Lord; and He delights in his way.
When he falls, he shall not be hurled headlong; because the Lord is the One
who holds his hand.”

Marriage can become a
daily boring routine. In
fact for many couples
that is what it has
become. A habit rather
than a relationship they
enjoy.
Who is responsible for
keeping the sizzle in the
relationship?
I think both parties are, but a lot of the time they don’t really
know what to do.
Any marriage that still has the fire, passion and excitement has
taken a lot of work from the man and woman.
Here are some tips for you.
1. Put God first in your relationship. He is the unseen hand that holds it all together. Problems al-
ways come in marriages but with Him in the fore front, they
always go away. He will lead, direct, nudge, encourage and
protect the marriage because it matters to Him.
2. Tell your spouse you love him or her. Men like to show their affections by the things they do for
their wives and I am sure every wife appreciates the things
they do. Actions speak louder than words, but words often
speak more clearly than actions. Take a moment every now
and then to verbalize your feelings for your spouse. A simple “I
love you” or “You mean the world to me” can go a long way
towards making your significant other feel wanted, cared for,
and secure in your relationship.
3. Small acts of physical intimacy.
They could be the hand on the small of the back as you brush
by in the hallway, your arm around their shoulder on the sofa,
your hand on their thigh when seated side-by-side, holding
hands while walking down the street – give your spouse a warm
feeling to convey the love and affection you feel for him or her.
The littlest touch can be as important, or even more important,
than the longest night of sexual intimacy.
4. Show appreciation for your spouse.
Let him or her know on a regular basis what it is that you like
most about them – what you admire, what makes you proud,
what their strengths are in your eyes. Encouraging and sup-
porting each other’s growth over the course of your lives
should be an everyday thing.
5. Don’t take your spouse for granted. Cultivate a daily sense of gratitude for your spouse and the
thousands of little blessings he or she has brought into your life.
Remember that, if you’re happy in your relationship, your part-
ner is doing a thousand little things for you every day to make
your relationship work. I guess it works both ways.
6. Communicate to share yourself. Don’t keep your likes and dislikes, dreams and fears, achieve-
ments and mistakes, or anything else to yourself. If it’s im-
portant to you, share it with your spouse. Those are the things
couples should talk about when they spend time together, not
the national economy or the other people’s issues. They get to
know one another better-wholesome communication.
7. Life can throw stuff at us. It is important to be there for your spouse when life hits them.
The loss of a job, life threatening ill health or the death of a
loved one, are all part of life. But it’s important to be supportive
when your spouse faces these challenges. Even non-
threatening things like an argument at work, a rough commute,
a misplaced key can be rattling. Being the voice of calm and
reason when chaos strikes is the best you can be at such times.
Listen to what’s bothering them and offer whatever help you
can, even if it’s just sympathy. It will be appreciated.
8. Be generous with gifts. Look for any excuse to buy a gift for your spouse. They become
material tokens of your love. Birthdays and anniversaries are giv-
en. But every other day is another reason to give a gift. Just the
right book picked up at the bookstore, a special dessert, a piece of
jewelry or clothing you noticed at the store – anything small or
large that tells them you were thinking of them. Leave a love note
for them, or send them an SMS at work to “I love you” – again, the
little reminder that they’re always on your mind will help your
spouse feel better about themselves and secure in your relation-
ship.
9. Be fair in your relationship.
Look out for one another. Get out of traditional marriage models
that no longer work. Make sure you follow the Golden Rule in
your relationship: do unto your spouse as you would have done
unto you. These are the days all hands have to be on deck for
household tasks. Don’t have unfair expectations of your
spouse.

4 Steps to Great Referrals
One great way to get new business is through referrals. When
others give their endorsement and recognition of our abilities
it often takes very little to move a prospect to become a buyer.
Whether we are aware of it or not, we tend to value the opin-
ion of others. This is why we look up testimonials and product
recommendations and why we tap into our networks before
making a purchase. I find that my referrals are often not both-
ered about my prices. They have heard “a good word” from
someone else and are here for their piece of the action!
So, are you getting business through referrals? Or more
importantly, are you making referrals happen? If this is such
a great way to get new business, it does stand to reason that
we should help the process along. I teach my clients to make
proactive referral generation a vital part of their marketing.
Here are 4 ways to make your referrals happen:
1. Do a great job! Of course, this is a no-brainer! Make sure to ask your clients
the outcomes they want to achieve. Then you can proceed to
meet and exceed their expectations. And when this happens
they will tell others!
Ask for feedback periodically; do not wait till the end of the
project. This way, you show that you care, and can get back on
track if you are missing the mark.
2. Ask for referrals and make it easy to give them!
At the point when the customer is expressing their satisfaction
ask if they know anyone else who could do with such great
service. Provide the customer with something tangible to pass
along, such as a newsletter, free sample, a URL or a link to a
video. Keep your referral sources updated with your news and
success. This is a non-sales way to remind them that you are
still here!
3. Seek and cultivate referral partners.
As you network for business be on the lookout for others who
serve your target market but are not in direct competition.
Invite them to cross-promote with you and send each other
business. Be sure to send them referrals, promote them on
your blog or newsletter and pass on their flyers or business
cards. Then track your referrals to see which partners are
keeping their end of the deal. And you know what to do with
those who are not!
Give incentives. Make it a win-win situation for people
to send you referrals. What can you give to show your appre-
ciation? A free ticket to your event? A complimentary consul-
tation? A chapter of your book? A free subscription to a paid
product or service? Even happy clients can get busy and
forget to pass on your details. Make it easy for them to
remember with an incentive!
Remember that what goes around comes around; give
great value and receive great referrals. Give others business
and they will reciprocate. If you make it a priority to provide
good value and proactively seek referrals you will build a very
viable source of new business – referrals!

INTRODUCTION
God has a predestined us to
glory. God wants everybody to
be somebody and He does not
want anybody to be a nobody.
Ecclesiastes 5:9 (paraphrased)
says, ‘The profit of the earth is
for all, the king Himself is fed
from the earth’.
God wants everybody to make it. Concern-
ing His children, God declares in 1 Peter 2:9
(KJV), that; “...ye are a chosen generation, a
royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar
people, called to show forth the praises of
Him who hath called you out of darkness
into His marvelous light.”
We are to declare, to demonstrate to the
world around us, the praises of God in the
earth. Also in Haggai 2:8, God says that He
would shake the earth and overthrow king-
doms and nations. And then the desire of all
nations shall come. What is the desire of all
nations, what is the world looking for, what
is man struggling and sweating for? -
WEALTH.
This is the aspiration of the whole world.
But God says silver and gold is mine and I
will fill this house with glory. So God wants
everybody that is His child to be somebody.
Psalm 112:1-3 declares that for every man
who fears the Lord and delights in His com-
mandments, wealth and riches shall be in
his house and his righteousness will endure
forever. Righteousness and wealth go to-
gether.
It is a wrong philosophy that state that pov-
erty brings you closer to God because the
Bible has declared that blessed is the man
that fears the
Lord, wealth and
riches shall be in
his house. We
serve a great God,
we are sons of a
King and we are
royal ambassa-
dors on this earth.
Psalm 35:27, de-
clares that God is
concerned about
your welfare,
because He takes pleasure in the prosperity
of His servants.
WHAT IS BUSINESS?
Business is any productive endeavour you
are engaged in. A pharmacist is in business,
so is a researcher and a preacher. It doesn’t
matter what you are doing, business is not
limited to just buying and selling. Jesus Him-
self gave this definition in Luke 2:49, saying
“...I must be about my father’s business”,
and what Jesus was doing was teaching and
preaching. That was what He was called by
God to do. Business in the eyes of God is
not necessarily seeking for contract all over
the place, but when you are adding some-
thing to your generation, then you are in
business.
There are some people out there who are
adding nothing to their generation, rather
they are reducing from that which is being
produced. These are the people who may
be y virtue of their position or connections
in high places, are privileged to receive
goods to themselves, yet adding nothing to
the quality, quantity or even to relocating
the goods to the retailers, doing absolutely
nothing but yet adding to the cost of the
goods. This is not business in the eyes of
God.
GOD CONCEPT OF BUSINESS
We miss it, because we have our own idea
of what we think wealth should be and how
it should come. Here is what God’s idea of
wealth is.
God’s wealth is progressive
Proverbs 21:5
“The thoughts of the diligent tend only to
plenteousness; but of every one that is has-
ty, only to want”
Diligence leads to plenty. A diligent man is
someone who is consistent in a particular
thing. It can also be defined as the ability to
constantly apply one’s self to a particular
thing.
The thoughts of a man who is ready to ap-
ply himself, keep applying himself, remains
consistent at that thing and excels in that
thing tends to plenty.
However, hastiness only produces lack. In
other word, hastiness is costly. Proverbs
23:20 (KJV) says a faithful man shall abound
in blessings. He is loyal and committed. He
is like the diligent man. While he that makes
haste to be rich, shall not be innocent.
(Prov 28:20 KJV).
