Education and Outreach at the Newcomb Campus meets state standards and Common Core bench-marks. Customized educational programs are offered year-round and our professional staff of educators and researchers infuse hands-on experiential learning with the knowledge and research findings of the nation’s oldest stand-alone institution dedicated to the study of our environment. Plan a day-trip or take advantage of our housing and dining facilities for a multi- day experience.

Education and Outreach

Founded in 1911, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) is the top-ranked environmental college in the country. ESF is a doctoral degree-granting research institution, where students pursue studies in diverse fields of environmental science, engineering, design and management.

In addition to our 12-acre Syracuse campus, ESF operates a network of field stations, experimental forests and study sites occupying 25,000 acres across New York state, including locations in the Thousand Islands and the Adirondacks. ESF inspires tomorrow’s environmental leaders, creates knowledge and options for innovative solutions, and seeks societal consensus on the great environmental challenges of our time.

Support the AIC

The AIC features four hiking and running trails that wind 3.6 miles through its 236-acre property, along the shoreline of Rich Lake and Rich Lake Outlet. Trailheads are located at the Adirondack Interpretive Center building.

• R.W. Sage Jr. Memorial Trail: This 1.1-mile loop along the shoreline of Belden Lake passes through a mixed forest of coniferous and deciduous trees

• Rich Lake Trail: This 0.6-mile trail offers views of Rich Lake and Goodnow Mountain

• Peninsula Trail: Travel through old-growth hemlocks and admire the beauty of Rich Lake on this 0.9-mile loop

• Sucker Brook Trail: This 1.0-mile trail along Rich Lake travels parallel to the route logs took during the Hudson River log-driving days. This is a great trail to spot wildlife.

The Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) is ESF’s public outreach and nature center, welcoming thousands of guests from across New York state and the world each year. From casual walks along our trails in summer or winter to rustic furniture-building workshops, we offer a range of immersive nature-based activities for all interests and ages.

The Northern Forest Room is an interactive exhibit introducing human and natural history of the Adirondacks and Northern Forest.
