ADJECTIVES (LES ADJECTIFSJ

In English, an adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun. Without adjectives, any language would be rather dull. Imagine not being able to describe yourself, your friends, your pet animals, or anything at all.

In French, the same holds true. The only difference is that in French, as you will recall, adjectives must agree with the nouns or pronouns that they describe in both gender and number. Therefore, French adjectives will have four forms, and English one form.

e.g. petit (m. sing.) (small) petite (f. sing.) (small)

>

>

petits (m. pl.) (small) petites (f.pl.) (small)

In both languages, adjectives can be:

a) descriptive (qua/ificatifs) i.e they describe someone/something.

b) demonstrative (demonstratifs) i.e. they point to someone/something.

c) interrogative (interrogatifs) i.e. they ask questions about someone/something.

d) possessive (possessifs) i.e. they show possession.

Since adjectives in French must agree with the nouns or pronouns that they describe, it is important that you know the gender and the number of those nouns and pronouns. If you don't, then you will surely use the wrong form of the adjective. Now let's begin reviewing the various types of adjectives.

REGULAR DESCRIPTIVE ADJECTIVES (LES ADJECTIFS QUALIFICATIFS RiGULIERS)

In French, "/es adjectifs qualificatifs'~ are used to describe or modify nouns or pronouns. As you already know, they must agree in gender and in number with those nouns and pronouns.

e.g. Pierre (m.sing.) est intelligent. (m.sing.) Marie (f.sing.) est intelligente. (f.sing.) Mes amis (m.pl.) sont intelligents. (m.pl.) Ses cousines (f.pl.) sont intelligentes. (f.pl.)

In French, regular adjectives usually have four forms.

Masculine Feminine • Singular > +e • Plural +s > +es

e.g. fort > forte ferme > fermee forts > fortes fermes > fermees

r~

Note: the final "e" on the masculine singular form must be an accented "e" (e). Other regular adjectives that follow the above pattern are:

chaud vrai gratuit grand petit vert froid fatigue prepare lent intelligent joli fascinant bruyant brun excellent brillant violent content different noir ouvert glac.e independant

THE POSITION OF DESCRIPTIVE ADJECTIVES (LA PLACE DES ADJECT/FS QUALIFICATIFS)

In French, most descriptive adjectives follow the noun that they describe.

des jeans noirs des fourmis actives un parfum fran(ais

un tigre feroce les fenetres ouvertes un vent violent

However, there are certain adjectives that precede the noun. Some of these are :

bon/bonne petit I petite vieux (vieil) I vieille dernier I derniere

e.g. de bons amis

NOTE:

un grand chapeau un vieil ami

mauvais I mauvaise long I tongue grand I grande jeune I jeune gros I grosse beau (bel) I belle nouveau (nouvel) I nouvelle

unejeune dame une mauvaise idee une longue promenade

es petites villes les grosses lunettes la derniere fois

a) vieil, nouve/, and be/ are used before a masculine singular noun beginning with a vowel or a silent "h'~

e.g. un nouvel ami
