What are ADJECTIVES?

• An ADJECTIVEADJECTIVE is a word that modifies, or describes, a NOUNNOUN.

• Adjectives tell WHAT WHAT KINDKIND, WHICH ONE WHICH ONE, or HOW MANYHOW MANY.

• Adjectives usually come BEFOREBEFORE the noun.

Common & Proper

• Adjectives, like nouns, can be COMMONCOMMON or PROPERPROPER.

• PROPERPROPER adjectives, like proper nouns, are always capitalized.

• Some COMMONCOMMON adjectives:

• Some PROPERPROPER adjectives:

General & Specific

• Adjectives can be GENERALGENERAL or SPECIFICSPECIFIC.

• Some GENERAL GENERAL adjectives:

big, colorful, many

• Some SPECIFICSPECIFIC adjectives: 100-pound, green, twenty-two

Special Adjectives

• ARTICLESARTICLES are special adjectives.

• AA, ANAN, and THETHE are all ARTICLESARTICLES.

A vs. AN

• Use AA before nouns that begin with a

CONSONANTCONSONANT sound.

• Use ANAN before nouns that begin with a VOWELVOWEL sound.
