Program Status
• Established in 1992 by the CFS to
promote the principles of sustainable
forest management (SFM)
• Renewed in 2002 for another 5-year
period (Phase III, 2002-07)
• Currently there are 11 MF’s and 3
Special Project Areas across Canada
Canadian Model Forest Network
Phase III Program Objectives
• Increase development and adoption of SFM systems and tools
• Distribute results locally, regionally nationally and internationally
• Strengthen other activities in support of Canada’s and provincial SFM priorities
• Increase local level participation
Achievements to date
• Currently over 500 partners working with various model forests
• 9 Colleges and 32 Universities are actively involved as project collaborators
• MF’s encompass over 19.77 million hectares of Canada forests
• NRCan-CFS has provided $500,000 per year to each model forest, plus added Network support
• Program has achieved high leverage - total annual cash and in-kind contributions amounted to $18.0 M (2004/05)

• MOU with CFS/IMFNS under
development;
– Draft approved in principle by CMFN Inc.
Forest Communities Program
• Replacement for NRCan/CFS Model Forest Program
• Five-year initiative; 2007-2012
• Targeting rural, forest-based communities
• Funding up to $400K per site/year
