Adult Student Association (ASA)

Commuter Student Association (CSA)

Frequently, adult students must juggle work and home lives, along with student life. The ASA serves as a support and advocacy group for the unique needs of adult students, which differ from those of traditional-aged students. On Monday, August 20, the ASA was present at the adult scholarship reception hosted by the ACSS. Fifteen (15) full-time adult (non-traditional aged) students received a scholarship for full and/or part time tuition. They were also paired with a faculty/staff mentor who will assist them in navigating the academic system, and provide support in balancing their campus lives. The ASA would like to Con-gratulate all of the 2007 scholarship recipients. The ASA meets on the first Thursday of every month. The first meeting was held on Thursday, September 6th, on the 5th floor of Wilder Tower from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Membership dues are $20 for the entire year. All members will receive a ASA T-shirt. On Friday September 21, in 407 Mitchell Hall at 1:00 pm, the ASA will present a workshop with Dr. Bekis entitled “How to Get an A.” A Blood drive is also planned for September 27 between noon and 4:00 pm.

You can pick up information and an application to join the ASA in the Adult & Commuter Student Services office, fifth floor, Wilder Tower, or contact either the president of the ASA, Joan Rayman at [email protected] or Michele Wieland, Vice President at [email protected].

ASA and CSA : Organizations with You in Mind

If you drive a car, take a seat on the bus, hail a taxi, fly a helicopter, ride a tiger, or shoot yourself out of a cannon to get to school, then the Commuter Student Association (CSA) is the organization for you. The CSA is dedicated to representing stu-dents who live off-campus (i.e. anyone not living in university owned property). They deal with issues ranging from transporta-tion and parking, to apartment living and safety on and off campus. On Friday August 17th, the CSA hosted a Commuter Student Mixer at the Panhellenic Building. The mixer provided an opportunity for commuter students to meet and get ac-quainted, as well as become familiar with the CSA and thei in-terests. The CSA also participated in the student involvement fair on August 27th, 2007. The CSA is scheduled to meet on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 3:00 pm. The first meeting was held on August 30th. You can come by the ACSS office on the fifth floor of Wilder Tower or email the CSA at [email protected] for more information

Did you know that, currently, more than 90 % students, faculty and staff live off-campus? In order to serve this huge population, Adult & Commuter Student Services is proud to be launching a brand new website in the coming weeks. This website is designed to help students, faculty, and staff search for off- campus housing. The Off-Campus housing listings will be accessible from the ACSS website, www.memphis.edu/acss. You will also be able to access this information from several other locations on the University of Memphis website. The new website will be easy to use, designed with a variety of features to facilitate the housing search experience.

For example: • Customizable search criteria for

narrow, refined results • Rental and For Sale listings. • Maps for locating properties.

• Listings may include pictures and floor plans to give you a clearer perspective on the property before you view it.

• Links to e-mail, and websites allow you direct and easy contact with property owner/managers.

• Message Board allows users to post notices for roommates, buy/sell notices, etc.

• The Off-Campus Housing website will save you time, and present you with more housing options than you may find on your own. It’s not just about finding a place, it’s about finding the place that’s right for you. This new website will help you do that. Check the ACSS website for more info.

Start Your Day With Us At the crack of dawn on the first days of school, ACSS was already up and at it with the Start Your Day With Us campaign. The campaign was designed to increase student awareness of ACSS. They were stationed at the train crossing on Walker Avenue, ready with cold bottles of water and information flyers to welcome students to school. The water was much appreciated after students were delayed up to forty-five minutes by a train which stalled, blocking the crossing. The following day, water was provided for students arriving to school on Central Avenue. To cap off the event on Wednesday and Thursday, ACSS offered free breakfast on the fifth floor of Wilder Tower. Students stated that they enjoyed the breakfast and that they looked forward to taking advantage of the services that ACSS provides.

Tutoring Available English, History, and Mathematics tutoring will be offered this semester. English tutoring will be available on

Wednesdays, beginning September 12th, from 2:30-3:30 pm, provided by Kay Driver. Mathematics and U.S. History tutoring is available by appoint-ment only. Please call 678-2644 for more details.

Insert a number in each box so that each row, column, and square (3x3 box) contains the numbers 1-9 without duplicating any of the numbers. Bring the completed puzzle to the fifth floor of Wilder Tower by September 21st and win a prize.
