DESCRIPTION

This issue talks about opportunities on campus for adult students, a recap of our Commuter Student Appreciation Week, and upcoming ACSS events.

TRANSCRIPT

What does it mean to be a commuter adult student? It means that you probably have a full or part time job, take care of a family and handle other responsibilities all while being dedicated to attending classes. But, all of the juggling of time and activities can create a rift between a commuter student and the universi-ty. So, why is it important for a busy student to get involved with campus organizations or activities? Jon Campbell, Coordinator of Leader-ship Programs, says, “We all have a need to continually grow and expand our world view. The leadership programs at Memphis provide opportunities for networking and creating con-nections that can help you get that ideal job or promotion one day.”

The lunch with a leader series gets students connected with local leaders while discussing issues and eating lunch. The lec-tures cover topics that provide “real life per-

spectives and open-ended discussions” about leadership and professions. All University of Memphis students are invited to participate. The next series is November 8th with Stephen C. Reynolds, President of Baptist Memorial hospital. Box lunches will be provided on a first come first serve basis. If you are already active in a student

organization, the Tiger Leadership Summit will offer students the chance to network with other student leaders, learn methods for improving as a leader, and generate ideas for creating ideal Student Organizations at Memphis. The leader-ship summit is on November 17th and the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement is cur-rently accepting applications.

“Our office is here to provide a connec-tion to students and the campus,” said Camp-bell. “We also offer information about intern-ships, community service and volunteer oppor-tunities and leadership scholarships.” Other offices on campus offer career development opportunities to students. Career Encounters is a job shadowing program offered by the Center for Counseling, Learning and Testing. Students can explore the future career they want while shadowing a local business leader. It offers unique insights and gives stu-dents the chance to ask successful leaders about their careers. Getting involved on with the university can help develop students for leadership the same way that classes prepare them for a career. Contact Jon Campbell [email protected] for

Opportunities October: It’s time to get involved!

Well, It seems like we just started the semester and now we are fast approaching fall semester break. This is an opportunity to take a short break and also write papers and complete other assignments that will be due upon your return.

We hope that you can also take this time to start considering the opportunities U of M provides for leadership. Although good grades are essential for getting your diploma, future employers are also going to look at your skills that showcase your analytical and critical thinking, leader-ship and problem solving abilities. The Office of Student Leadership and Involvement has many opportunities for you to get involved!

Even if you’re a non-traditional, adult student you can join organizations and gain leadership skills that will stand out on a résumé. Our office sponsors both the Commuter Student Association and the Adult Student Association, and they are currently accepting applications for new members.

October 1-5, 2012 was Commuter Student Appreciation Week. We hope that you were able to attend some of the events that we planned for you. This edition will include highlights from the Kickoff Commuter Luncheon, Arrive Alive driving simulator, Student Health Fair, Tiger Bingo and our Transportation and Safety Expo. Additionally we will be hosting a seminar about Domestic Violence this month and we hope that all stu-dents will be able to attend.

Have a fun and safe Fall break and Halloween! Go Tigers!

THE SPOTLIGHT

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Binghamton, New York. I moved to Memphis at the age of 18 to attend college. I began at CBU and transferred over my junior year to the University of Memphis and it was the best decision I ever made! I chose the city of Memphis be-cause my older sister/her husband/my twin nephews live here and I wanted to try something new. I graduated this August with a B.B.A. in management from the University of Memphis.

How are you involved with ACSS ? I am a graduate assistant and the special events coordinator. I will be organizing monthly training semi-nars throughout the school year that will cover topics such as stress management and cyber bullying. I will also be in charge of organizing and planning the off-campus hous-ing fair that will be taking place in mid-March in the Rose Theatre.

Getting to know our adults and commuters

Favorite sports team? I’m a huge Tigers fan, obviously! I am also a huge New York Giants fan. I’ve adapted to Memphis and in turn have gradually turned myself into a Grizzlies fan. Hobbies/Travel Aspirations? I love athletics. I enjoy playing golf and basketball as well as running. Exploring the outdoors, hiking and sightseeing are some of my favorite activities. I love walking/playing with my Rottweiler, Ellie. I obvi-ously love to travel since I moved to Memphis alone at the age of 18, but I really want to explore the western united states. I have been all over the East Coast, so I now want to venture into the west. I recently traveled to San Diego and Denver and had a fantastic time in those amazing cities. I plan on traveling to Dublin over winter break to visit some friends that live over there. It will be my first international experience outside of Canada.
