Time management and
prioritizing is one of the hardest things
to do for a student, especially a college
student. Trying to keep up with home-
work, exams, papers and other duties
that students have can really be a chal-
lenge. Other times, deciding whether
you want to party or hang out, rather
than do homework or study, is a dilem-
ma that many students face.
While time management is very
difficult, there are strategies that could
make managing your time easier.
Paddy Fitzgerald, Graduate
assistant for Adult and Commuter
student services, has many strategies
that he uses to manage his time. “You
have to prioritize; addressing the more
pressing issues first and completing the
most important tasks will help,” he said.
Paddy also said getting good sleep and
waking up early enough to get things
done is important.

Heather Hampton, office
coordinator for Adult and Commuter
Student Services, uses more online
strategies for time management, such as
task managers, electronic calendars and a
website called Kanban flow
(Kanbanflow.com).
Heather says, “Kanbanflow is an
online software that allows you to set a
timer as you are doing tasks, and you take
break intervals between a 30 minute time
frame until you complete the task; when
you’re done, the website allows you to
mark the task as complete.”
There are so many other
resources that students can use to help
improve their time management skills.
Other students use mobile phone apps
that have agendas, reminders and alarms
that can help them be more organized and
able to manage time wisely. Also,
keeping a to-do list, setting goals and
avoiding procrastination are all important
for students to be successful in managing
time during their college career.
One always has time
enough, if one will
apply it well.

Goethe
Welcome students to the University of Memphis. I hope that you
enjoyed your summer break and that you’re excited, and ready to start a
productive fall 2013 semester. I hope new students were able to attend
New Student Convocation and the Registered Student Organization Fair.
Also, we were so pleased to see all of the students who stopped by our free
breakfast and information table during welcome week.
If you live off campus please feel free to visit our office, University
Center room 243, to learn more about ways you can get involved and to
meet other commuters. Our office has many resources and services that
are designed to ease your transition into college, as well as support you
Academically, and socially as adult learners and commuter students.

ACSS CONNECTION
September 2013
ACSS: What exactly is your role as the Associate dean of the
University College?
Irwin: I get to design a lot of programs for Adult students.
We have online classes for experiential learning Credit
where students have the opportunity to earn credits for
personal experience. The average age of an ELC student
Is 40 years old.
ACSS: Do you get to interact with many students?
Irwin: No, that was a sacrifice that I have made taking this
role. I have always been student centered. I was in sports
management for the University for 16 years starting in
1994. I then took this role as associate dean in 2010 and
Now I don't get to interact with students as much.
ACSS: What do you love most about your role as Associate Dean?
Irwin: I love that I get to do innovative and creative things. I get to design programs that
are student friendly, and appeal to the adult student. One program that I am excited
about is our competency based programs for the adult student. You earn your degree
through demonstration of skills and knowledge in required subject areas through a series
of carefully designed assessments. You’ll take tests, write papers, and complete assign-
ments.
ACSS: What advice can you give adult and commuter students?
Irwin: Adult students have a lot on their plate. Pride, enthusiasm and being a little selfish
is important. It’s a roller coaster and we understand that, but it is important that students
follow their passion and are persistent.
