Supporting those with sight lossWe provide a range of specialist support for learners with a visual impairment including a range of assistive technology solutions, such as:

• Speech to text software

• Screen readers

All information is available in accessible formats such as Braille or large print, there are facilities for guide dogs, and guiding and orientation is available to familiarise yourself with the layout. We can also take consideration of physical environments such as lighting, glare, consistency of layout and seating position.

Flying highThe Aviation Environment class of 2015 have all been snapped up by a local employer, with 100% of our students being offered jobs with Swissport at Bristol Airport!

Helen Mortimore, Senior Lecturer at City of Bristol College, said of the stunning achievement: “This programme is an example of how meeting the needs of the industry results in employment for young people. We’re passionate about supporting our students and it’s fantastic to see how many of our students go on to employment.”

The Aviation Environment programme is part of the City and Guilds Aviation Programme.

Top of the classIn the last academic year, we scored a pass rate of 94% for our A Level results, with 68% of our 113 A Level students achieving A* to C grades and three other students gaining straight A results.

From leading worthwhile community projects, cooking alongside celebrity chefs, and taking part in a professional fashion event, our students have continued to excel. Compliments to the chefsMichelin-starred celebrity chefs heaped praise on our catering and hospitality students for events during the year. As well as fantastic student performances at the Bristol Food Connections and Eat Drink Bristol Fashion events, the Radio 4 Farming Awards saw our students meeting celebrity chefs such as Tom Kerridge and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (who took a particular fancy to the students’ devilled kidneys).

Brilliant Bristol fashionOur fashion, hair and make-up students dazzled the local style industry at the Style Forum event, last year. College students got the opportunity to assist in demonstrations and meet some of the top talent in the fashion, make-up and hairdressing industries.

Adult Apprenticeships Apprenticeships aren’t just for 16 year olds. At City of Bristol College we work closely with employers in the South West to offer over 40 apprenticeships across nine industry sectors.

So whether you’re interested in Plumbing or Professional Cookery, you could earn as you learn.

Our apprenticeships are open to applicants of any age. The only criteria is that you have not previously achieved a Level 4 qualification or above.

As an adult apprentice you will be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week and may need to attend classroom tuition sessions at one of our centres. At the end of it, you will achieve a nationally recognised qualification relevant to the industry you have chosen to specialise in.

154 Funding your courseSome of our students are eligible for financial support to help them with the cost of attending College. You may be eligible for free tuition on certain courses (depending on your age, the level of the course, your previous qualifications or if you receive certain benefits).

We’ve outlined a few typical examples below, but if you are unsure of what you are entitled to, get in touch to discuss your options.

If you’re aged 19-23 and do not currently hold a full Level 2 qualification or above, you may be eligible to learn for free when you enrol on your first full Level 2 or Level 3 course.

If you’re aged 19 or over, and are registered unemployed or receive one of the following benefits, you may be eligible for free tuition on many of our courses.

• Jobseekers’ Allowance

• Employment Support Allowance in the work-related activity group

• Council Tax Benefit

• Housing Benefit

• Income Support

• Working Tax Credit

• Pension Credit

This also applies to:

• Unemployed dependents (a partner or child under the age of 25 entering full-time education) of those receiving benefits

• Unemployed dependents of those receiving Working Tax Credits.

If you’re aged 24 or over, and not eligible for any of the above, you have three options available to you:

• Pay your course fees yourself

• Have an employer/sponsor pay your course fees for you

• Apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to help pay for your course fees (see opposite).

155Are you an adult learner?

Extra help for the over 24s24+ Advanced Learning Loans for tuition costs are available to those studying for Level 3 or 4 further education qualifications.

This means that rather than having to pay for your course upfront, you’ll have the option of taking a loan from the Student Loans Company. (The loan doesn’t depend on your income and there are no credit checks.)

Plus, you will only start to repay that loan once you’ve left your course and are earning over £21,000. And if you take out a loan for an Access to Higher Education Diploma, you will not have to repay it if you then go on to complete a Higher Education (university) qualification.

Are you eligible?Whether you qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan depends on:

• Which course you want to study (funding is available for certain courses only, so check the eligibility of your course before applying)

• Your age

• Your nationality or residency status.

Come in for an interviewIf your course requires it, you will be invited in to meet one of our tutors to discuss the course and any experience and qualifications you may have.

Accept your placeWe’ll usually get in touch within 48 hours of your interview with an offer. All you need to do is accept and agree your method of payment (if required).

Make your applicationFor most of our courses you’ll need to complete an application form (see opposite or online) and return it to the Reception desk at one of our centres, or send it in by post.
