Emerging Opportunities & Challenges in Indian Aerospace & Defence
Two day National Conference & Exposition on
th thAugust 17 - 18 , 2012
Dept. of Aerospace Engineering, MIT
About SAEINDIA :
About SAEINDIA Southern Section :
About SAEINDIA Aerospace Board :
SAEINDIA is the largest affiliate of SAE International outside the US and registered in India as a not for profit engineering and scientific society dedicated to the advancement of mobility industry in India through its Sections & Divisions across India
SAEINDIA has five sections, namely Northern, Eastern, Western, Bangalore and Southern. The SAEINDIA Southern section (SAEISS) is the oldest and covers Tamilnadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
SAEISS has a Coimbatore Division & Hyderabad Div is ion that recognizes the growing concentration and contribution to mobility engineers, academic institutions and industry in this region.
SAEINDIA embarked on this initiative to create a focused set of Aerospace & Defence (A&D) offerings within SAE India with the formal inauguration of the SAE India Aerospace Board
thon 17 December 2009.
Growth will spawn spending in associated areas such as infrastructure development, MRO, training and various other technical and professional services
India with proven capabilities in the fields of Information Technology (IT) and Information technology Enabled Services (ITES) is well poised to be a significant player in Aerospace industry as well.
Indian manufacturing & servicing industries can contribute to and benefit from the growth in the A&D sector by developing requisite capabilities by partnering and fostering a healthy aerospace eco system within India.
Objective of the ConferenceAccording to a report, the global Installed base of aircraft is expected to grow from 19000 in 2007 to 28000 in 2017. In India alone, the Aerospace Industry is believed to require a staggering investment of between USD 200 to 300 billion over 2009-2034 to leverage its full potential.
To unlock its growth promise, the Indian Aerospace Industry would require not just a good ecosystem comprising the industry and the academia, but also very high quality talent pool that is capable of driving increasingly larger programmes through global collaboration. This requires mastery over tools and a great awareness of leading edge issues in this area. The expectations from an aircraft is changing over time and it not enough to say it should be a safe flying machine capable of providing reasonable comfort - for example, today's aircraft should be more and more fuel efficient, provide better flying experience and be easy to operate and maintain. As a market driven trend that makes the job of aerospace engineer even more challenging, the need is to develop aircraft in increasingly reduced development time.
In this conference we would debate on the state of the Aerospace Industry in India, its engineering imperatives and what the various opportunities within this sector pertaining to R&D, Industry Best Practices, Regulatory and Commercial, etc. With an exposition coinciding with this conference, SAEISS hopes for a great confluence of Aerospace professionals.
Chennai will witness for the first time an exposition on Aerospace where the Aerospace Industries will showcase their business capabilities and explore future business markets.

In 1949, Shri.C.Rajam, gave the newly independent India-Madras Institute of Technology, so that MIT could establish the strong technical base it needed to take its place in the world. It was the rare genius and daring of its founder that made MIT offer courses like Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electronics Engineering and Instrument Technology for the first time in our country. MIT has produced great scientist like Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, versatile genius like Sujatha and many more. The broad-based education, coupled with practice-oriented training in their speciality, has enabled the students of MIT to handle with skill and success a wide variety of technical problems. MIT had received many awards which includes an award for the Best Overall Performance, awarded by Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) during the year 1999.The Department of Aerospace Engineering (previously known as Faculty of Aeronautics) is the first department to offer undergraduate course in Aeronautical Engineering in India.
