OPENING LETTER FOR THE CEO

Dear colleagues,

Welcome to the current edition of AFAQ magazine,

which coincides with the festive occasion of Eid

Al Adha.

ADNOC Distribution is pleased to extend its sincere Eid greetings

to His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of

the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum,

Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,

Their Highnesses the Supreme Council members and Rulers of the

Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan,

Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of

the UAE Armed Forces, Their Highnesses the Crown Princes and

Deputy Rulers of the Emirates, as well as to the people of the UAE

and other Arab and Islamic nations.

In the current issue, you will learn more about an important milestone

that ADNOC Distribution has achieved for itself and the country at

large through the launch of a reformulated low-sulfur diesel product in the UAE market in July 2014. This

important step reinforced the UAE’s green credentials in line with the updated guidelines of the Emirates

Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA). The new diesel product is anticipated to have a positive

impact on the air quality of the UAE’s cities, roads and industrial areas.

ADNOC Distribution also completed the acquisition of 34 Emarat service stations and a fuel depot at Port

Khaled in Sharjah. In August 2014, ADNOC Distribution achieved the successful takeover of seven Emarat

service stations. We commend the teams involved in this project – both from ADNOC Distribution and

Emarat. Thanks to their efforts, the changeover could be conducted with minimal inconvenience to our

customers.

This edition of AFAQ also highlights ADNOC’s Vehicle Inspection Centers, through a field visit to Abu Dhabi

Centre which provides pivotal services to customers. We at ADNOC Distribution constantly seek opportunities

to take the quality of our services to the next level through endorsing best in class practices. It is this priority

that has allowed our centers to maintain customers’ trust across all locations in the UAE.

Finally, dear colleagues as we approach the last quarter of 2014, I encourage you all to continue your

successful careers at ADNOC Distribution with new resolutions in place. Let us sustain our culture at ADNOC

Distribution to offer creative ideas and suggest initiatives that enhance our service offerings

and impact positive changes in the local community for the greater benefit of our nation.

As always, I invite you to share your thoughts, feedback and comments on the current issue

that highlights ADNOC Distribution’s landmark achievements from July to October 2014.

The move, implemented in

collaboration with the relevant

stakeholders, is aligned with

ADNOC Distribution’s priority to

achieve sustainability and preserve

the quality of the environment in

the UAE.

His Excellency Abdulla Salem Al

Dhaheri, CEO, ADNOC Distribution,

said: “ADNOC Distribution’s move

to shift to low sulfur diesel product

reflects its keenness to collaborate

with its partners to provide

the best quality of products

and services that preserve the

environment and promote public

safety. The new high quality diesel

product contains a significantly

lower percentage of sulfur that

reduces carbon emissions and

mitigates their harmful effects on

the environment. The new diesel

product is also fuel efficient and

helps boost the performance of

vehicle engines.”

By offering high quality services

at all our services stations in

line with the standards and

specifications set by ESMA,

ADNOC Distribution seeks to play

a larger role in the implementation

of our national strategy to preserve

our environment and prevent

pollution.

The new diesel product is

anticipated to have a positive

impact on the air quality of the

UAE’s cities, roads and industrial

areas. With the launch of the green

product, the UAE became the first

country in the GCC and Middle

East to implement the mandatory

use of low-sulfur diesel and

discontinue the existing product.

The new diesel product, which contains 10 ppm of sulfur, replaced the previous product that

contained 500 ppm. This reduction in sulfur levels significantly reduces carbon emissions from

vehicles and mandate vehicle users to install filters and accessories to reduce the discharge of

exhaust gases.

ADNOC Distribution has launched on 1 July 2014 a reformulated low-sulfur diesel product in the UAE market following the UAE Cabinet’s decision to standardize the specifications of diesel products as part of updated guidelines announced by Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA).

SPOTLIGHT

Special Nature of ADNOC Distribution’s HSE ActivitiesHealth, safety, Security and

environment functions within the

petroleum products distribution

sector are critically important to

avoid accidents and damage to

both individuals and properties,

besides ensuring that our vital

public facilities and services

are undisrupted by any sudden

unfolding of events. In performing

its functions, ADNOC Distribution

relies on the efficiency of its HSSE

systems to ensure the continuity

of its business and safeguard its

facilities and workforce.

As a service-oriented entity,

the responsibility is even more

formidable given the fact that

ADNOC Distribution’s facilities

are located in densely populated

areas and its functions are

directly connected with people.

functions. Through two separate

sections for health and safety

operations, safety and environment

operations, the division oversees

the company’s HSSE functions in

both Abu Dhabi and the Northern

Emirates. The responsibilities of

both sections cover all ADNOC

Distribution facilities including

airports, service stations and

Vehicle inspection centers in their

respective geographical areas.

The Technical department, the

third section under the umbrella

of Health, Safety, Security and

Environment Division, is responsible

for follow-up of health and safety

projects, occupational health

projects, and occupational and

environmental health emergency

management.

Stressing on the importance of

continuous coordination between

the field and operation teams to

ensure streamlined workflow, Al

Maflahi said the division provides

various support, guidance and site

examination services.

Due to the diversity of ADNOC

Distribution’s functions and its

extensive geographical operations,

it is highly critical for the division to

maintain seamless coordination

with external parties, including

the General Directorate of Civil

Defense, the National Emergency

Crisis and Disaster Management

Authority and National Transport

Authority, as the operations

of HSSED division are closely

intertwined with that of its

stakeholders.

Commitment towards EnvironmentThe environmental compliance

is a critical element of ADNOC

Distribution strategy. Our teams

strive for continuous improvement

in this area through the ongoing

review of our environmental

practices and adherence to

different standards set by ADNOC

and its group of companies in

line with relevant federal and local

laws.

We are always keen to take

proactive measures and initiatives

to maintain environmental

sustainability and ensure the health

and safety of local community

whose service is our top priority.

Among the most significant

initiatives undertaken by ADNOC

Distribution are environmental-

friendly service stations such as

Yas 1 and Yas 2 service stations

located in Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Both stations are built according to

the best international standards in

green technology to preserve the

environment and reduce energy

and water consumption. The new

ADNOC service stations follow

the requirements of Leadership in

Energy and Environmental Design

(LEED), the internationally accepted

benchmark for the design,

construction and operation of high

performance green buildings.

Additionally, the vapor recovery

project, which is in the final stage

of installation, will capture and

recover vapor from gasoline

tankers, achieving a significant

reduction in hydrocarbons, energy

consumption and corrosion.

Gasoline evaporates and escapes

into the atmosphere during the

course of transportation and filling

in tankers and vehicles at gas

stations, leading to serious

environmental damage as well

as huge energy and financial

losses.

Another important project

ADNOC Distribution is currently

working on is the conversion

of vehicles into natural gas in

accordance with the highest

European specifications and

international standards in this

regard. The project is being

implemented in collaboration

with relevant government

agencies and advisory bodies.

Workplace SafetyOutlining the company’s

workplace safety measures, Al

Maflahi continued: At ADNOC

Distribution, we rely on three

key factors to ensure the safety

of the working environment

across our facilities.

First, we provide well-trained

and qualified teams and

individuals to realize our HSSE

objectives, with the safety of individuals

including employees, contractors,

partners and general public being

the most important aspect of our

HSSE activities. Towards this priority,

we also conduct a series of internal

training programs in coordination with

our Human Resource Division.

Secondly, we provide a sound

regulatory environment to ensure that

the best HSSE measures are put in

place across ADNOC and its group of

companies in general and at ADNOC

Distribution in particular. We are

also keen on the regular review and

upgrade of these measures.

The third factor is the deployment

of latest technology, equipment and

tools to ensure the quality and

safety of workplace. In addition,

we highlight the role of a qualified

leadership in spearheading our

HSSE initiatives, demonstrating

a high degree of commitment

and responsibility at senior

management level of ADNOC

Distribution starting with our CEO

His Excellency Abdulla Salem Al

Dhaheri and his executive team.

The company also develops

individual emergency and crisis

plans for each facility. This includes

clearly defined scenarios and

emulations of future emergency

situations as well as constant

training of our staff in coordination

with ADNOC and its Group of

Companies as well as our other

local partners.

Most Important ProjectsAccording to Al Maflahi, the most

important project that the HSSE

Division is currently undertaking

is the safety, security, surveillance

and crisis management integration

project, which uses modern

techniques to monitor the

company operations in various

geographies with the support of

highly efficient operations teams

who make right decisions in time-

bound manner. The project is a

vital one as it will help ADNOC

Distribution to monitor its nation-

wide operations.

Although we have teams

working in various geographies,

linking their services through an

integrated system will allow real-

time monitoring of their functions

and prevent any emergencies

effectively and quickly. This system

will also benefit in the areas of

training and development. We are

set to start the implementation of

the pilot phase by the end of this

year, following which all our location

will be linked via this system.

Achievements and Future ProjectsMohamed Al Maflahi also

highlighted the most important

achievements of his division

including the progress being made

in the performance development,

where the division has achieved

important milestones in fulfilling

its key performance indicators. It

has also won several awards and

accolades at the ADNOC Health,

Safety and Environment Awards

held recently.

These recognitions validate

the success of team work

across different divisions and

departments.

Regarding the future projects, Al

Maflahi clarified that the division

would continue to review its HSSE

practices in general and work

towards obtaining ISO certification

in HSSE.

Occupational Health Culture in ADNOC Distribution

Al Maflahi added that • occupational health culture

at ADNOC Distribution has

continued to evolve and

scored high in the annual

performance evaluation. This

is due to the careful follow-

up by the management that

had a positive impact on the

overall HSSE performance

and promoted a sense of

responsibility among the

employees. The ongoing

awareness programs and

site visits have also helped

to enhance various aspects

of HSSE across ADNOC

Distribution.

Department does not exist

anymore, but has been replaced

by the Property Management

Department, which continued on

the path of rapid expansion and

achievements. This has led to a

proposal to detach the facilities of

Autoserv to operate as standalone

facility under the management of

ADNOC Distribution. Afterwards,

a decision was issued by the Abu

Dhabi Executive Council to shift all

mechanical workshops operating

in Abu Dhabi Island to Mussaffah

area.

To cater to the growing needs

of Abu Dhabi residents for auto-

mechanical services, the first

Autoserv facility was set up near

the Sea Palace area, followed

by a second one next to Khalifa

Park. We are currently planning

to expand the Autoserv brand to

other areas such as our new facility

taking shape in Yas Island, which

is in the final stage of leasing

for its expected opening

by 2014-end. The

Autoserv network

has significantly

contributed

to

making the lives of our customers

easier by saving their time and

providing convenience. It goes

without saying that we have been

overwhelmed by the positive

response received from our clients

through our communication

channels. They were very thankful

to us for saving their time and

sparing them the hassle of driving

to Mussaffah for mechanical

services. These service centers

operate from 8am until 12am.

also proposed to designate some

areas of the services stations for

advertising purposes, for which we

have already received approval.

Additionally, the Property

Management Department has

played a critical role in the

agreement signed between ADNOC

Distribution and Emirates General

Petroleum Corporation (Emarat) to

acquire 75 service stations owned

by Emarat in the Northern Emirates.

The department is currently listing

the existing tenants at these

stations in order to negotiate with

them to renew their contracts.

number of students in various

disciplines as part of its training

programmes including “Yes to

Faisal Al Katheeri, a training

specialist at Training and Career

that the department conducted

a two-day orientation session for

students accepted in the program

prior to their secondment to service

students were introduced to

ADNOC and its group of companies

including ADNOC Distribution, its

service station network as well as

the practices of safety, security,

customer service and customer

communication. In addition, they

were familiarised with the products

offered through ADNOC Oasis

DAY OF MY LIFE

Filling station attendants are integral part of ADNOC Distribution’s

workforce due to their important work at the frontline of ADNOC

Distribution’s service delivery value chain and daily interaction

with customers. To shed further highlight on these unsung

heroes, we conducted an interview with Mohamed Koni Faya,

who has been selflessly serving the company for over 25 years.

Mohamed Koni Faya (Shift Supervisor)

Beginning of Journey with ADNOC Distribution Mohamed started his journey with

ADNOC Distribution back in 1988 as

a filling station attendant at Al Bateen

station. He says: “I still remember

the number of vehicles that we used

to handle at the time. They rarely

exceeded 30 vehicles. Now that

number has nearly doubled, this

reflects the fact that UAE has grown

quickly.”

Mohamed continues: “I have witnessed

firsthand the care and involvement

of the government of the UAE in the

welfare of its citizens. Our senior

leadership at ADNOC Distribution,

under the stewardship of His

Excellency Abdulla Salem Al Dhaheri,

had a great impact on the recent

development of service stations and

the accelerated growth in its numbers.

When I first joined ADNOC Distribution

working at Al Bateen Station, service

stations were fairly basic; but they

have undergone a series of changes

and developments since then in

order to keep up with the country’s

development and the growing demand

of customers.”

His life’s milestones: Mohamed says that ADNOC

Distribution takes great care

to ensure the satisfaction of its

employees, which helped the

company to establish a loyal

customer base throughout the

years. Mohamed’s, whose hard

work and long service were not

unnoticed, now holds the position

of a shift supervisor. His promotion

did not only helped him advance

his career, but it also granted him

a decent life. His first check of

1500 AED helped him turn one of

his biggest dreams into reality by

building an expansive house in his

home country. He can also now

easily provide financial support to

his immediate and extended family

members.

One last word Mohamed continued: “I would like

to express my warmest gratitude

to ADNOC Distribution for their

continuous efforts towards providing

support and appreciating its

employees. In fact, I was honored a

few months ago in appreciation of my

dedication and hard work. I am happy

to say that I am saving the financial

reward I received for my long service

to fund a Hajj trip for me and my family,

God Wiling. I would like to thank

AFAQ Magazine for giving me this

opportunity to express my gratitude to

ADNOC Distribution.”
