    Foreword by Michael S. Malone

We all remember that morning, even i it was through the haze o a hangoverheadache. Perhaps we were still in our clothes, lying atop an unmade bed, ourgown, mortarboard, and diploma all tossed in a pile in the corner. Or maybewe awoke in a strange bedroomor perhaps even worse, the most amiliarbedroom o all rom our childhood.

But wherever we awakened, we all shared the same thought: Now what?

College, especially i you do it right, is a our-year hiatus rom reality. Sure,it can be tough work, but it is also an isolated world ree rom most o thecares o the larger reality beyond its gates. This is especially true i you liveon campuswhere you get three meals per day, everyone is your age, and lawen orcement is largely kept at bay. Your only real task is to learn and to ponderthe great thoughts that you will rarely ever have time to think about again.

You largely get to orget about that bigger world Out Thereright up until thatmoment you strut across the stage, take the diploma in one hand, shake theuniversity presidents hand with the otherand then come hurtling back downto earth.

Real Li e is waiting or you at the ar end o the stageand its brought bosses, mortgages, screaming babies, work cubicles, and houseboat vacations. Itll letyou party tonight; but tomorrow morning its going to pay you a visitand thenits going to move in with you or the next seventy years or more.

We all remember that morningvaguely, because we mostly try to orget it.But to Matt Chow and Jonathan Chu, the authors o this remarkable book, thatmemory is as resh as an open sore. They embarked on writing this book justweeks a ter they had their own morning a terMatt rom UC San Diego, and

Jon rom Trinity College in Connecticut. Both young men had known eachother since high school in Cupertino, Cali ornia, and had stayed in touchduring the good times in collegeand now, a ter they had graduated andmoved back to their respective homes, in the long, depressing days and weeksa ter as they adjusted to being back with their parents, looking or jobs, and, ultimately, guring out what to do with the rest o their lives.

Ive known both o these young men or years (they are riends o my son),

and in Jons case, because I was his scoutmaster, since he was a little kid. Theyare both erociously intelligent, unny, and ne writersbut, o course, none othose talents are much use when you wake up that rst moment a ter collegegraduationlost, con used, and scared.

This is their guide or how to get through that morning, and the mornings a terthat, in one o the greatest li e transitions any o us ever make. It is eye-opening,depressing, optimistic, hair-raising, and hilarious. And I think it is the best, most truth ul book ever written about navigating those very rst days o realadulthood. I you are about to graduate college, or have just done so, buy thisbookyoull learn something on every page. And i you are a parent o a grown

child going through this transition, read it, and youll better understand whatsgoing on in the head o that mopey person now back living in the bedroomdown the hall.

Walking out o college, I had the romantic idea o being picked up by a nicecompany that would provide me enough income to live in my hometown. Ithought that I would quickly pay of my student loans and still have enoughmoney to buy the things that I wanted while slowly pursuing li e goals in my reetime. My li e would nally start, and school would be a distant, ugly memory. All this would be made possible because a ter our years o undergraduatestudy, I had a bachelors degree.

This didnt happen. Apparently, I didnt have the work experience nor theconnections to make it in the real world and, counting today, I have beenunemployed or eight and a hal months. The last ew months have been lledwith stress and con usion as I try to pursue my dreams, while worrying aboutwhere Im going to get the money to pay of my student loans, and what myamily is going to think o me when Im still living at home almost one yeara ter graduating. Its di cult to see my money drain away without a oreseeableincome. My li e did not exactly start; it simply ell into a living purgatory as

I scrambled to make mysel more appealing to employers. Even then theyseldom responded to my resume and when they did it was always a rejection.

Leaving college, I was not prepared or the li e o unemployment that awaitedme. Fortunately, over these past eight monthsshort or some people, a li etimeor othersI have been given many words o advice by riends and amily whowant to see me succeed. Hope ully this booka collection o the best thoughtsmy loved ones and I have come to understandwill help you i you ever ndyoursel reshly graduated and unemployed in the uture.

In our current economy, nding a suitable jobcan be di cult. You may not get a job as easily

as you might have rst thought. It has personallytaken us more time than we like to disclose to
