NOVEMBER,2010 From the pastor’s desk... News from Zion News from Zion [email protected] Www.zionscottsbluff. com Mission Prayer Partners for November, 2010 7th - Hans & Alice Wilhelm 14th - Gideon’s International 21st - Rick & Fairy Hattan/Awana 28th - Tom & Sandi Hofmann/Awana Please Take note... Gifts! “...so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” Romans 12:5-8 NIV Have you starting your Christmas Shopping yet? I must confess I’ve yet to start but I think my wife’s almost done! As the holidays approach we are reminded again of God’s greatest gift to us in Christ, but I would also have you consider some of the many gifts that are ours as a result of Christ. According to Romans 12:5-8 sighted above, when a person comes to Christ he is a part of the body of Christ – the Church – and each of us is given one or more gifts of the Holy Spirit intended for the up- building of the larger body of believers. When you are missing from the church it’s like an eye or an ear or and hand or a foot is missing from the body – your are really missed! And when you are separated from the body you are as functionally useful to Christ as a hand or eye or foot removed from the body and left lying on the table – you may be spiritually saved but your have become functionally dead. But when we connect and each play our part with Christ as our head wonderful things can be accomplished together for Christ and his Kingdom that no one of us could ever do alone. Look again at the list of gifts in the verses above – is there one or two of those gifts of the Spirit that God has whispering in your heart – “That’s me! That’s what I was intended for!” God is not waiting the for the most skilled and qualified people to get the job done – he’s looking for those who are available, humble and obedient to accomplish his purposes in the world. He’ll supply the training and the gifts, he’ll even give the call if we are listening. For more on what your spiritual gifts may be, I invite you to take a free Spiritual Gift Inventory at the website listed below. Then I invite you to pray about those gifts and how God might have you more effectively put them to use! BOOK RECOMMENDATION for November. . . A Place of Healing: Wrestling with the Mysteries of Suffering, Pain and God's Sovereignty by Joni Earekson Tada In this eloquent account of her current struggle with physical pain, Joni Eareckson Tada offers her perspective on divine healing, God’s purposes, and what it means to live with joy. Over four decades ago, a diving acci-dent left Joni a quadriplegic. Today, she faces a new battle: unrelenting pain. The ongoing urgency of this season in her life has caused Joni to return to foundational questions about suffering and God’s will. A Place of Healing is not an ivory-tower treatise on suffering. It’s an intimate look into the life of a mature woman of God. Whether readers are enduring physical pain, financial loss, or relational grief, Joni invites them to process their suffering with her. Together, they will navigate the distance between God’s mag-nificent yes and heartbreaking no - and find new hope for thriving in-between.

~ AWANA NEWS ~ To get “caught up”, I will start with the Sep-tember Clubber of the Month: Sparks – Anessa Meh-ling & Sawyer Riddick; T&T – Kimberleigh Cawley & Javier Jimenez and Trek – Jacob Pieper. Congratula-tions! Keep up the great work! We have had a VERY BUSY month in AWANA!!! October is our month for our Visitor Campaign and so the clubbers have been bringing their friends and we hope that they will turn into regular attending clubbers that will hear the Gospel message at least once a week at club with us! We had a staff meeting on October 3rd. As always, we had “too much fun” but it was also a very productive meeting – making plans through November. Our next staff meeting will be on November 21st fol-lowing club. Please mark your calendars, Staff!!! We also finished up our Parent’s Nights with Cubbies on the 3rd, Puggles & Trek on the 10th and Sparks on the 17th. It is always fun to see the delight on the clubber’s faces as their parents participate in the games on the game floor that they play each week. A BIG THANKS to the Staff for the great job they do of hosting! AWANA celebrated Pastor’s Appreciation on Sunday, October 24th. We missed not having Dewey & Betty Brothers there with the Schick’s and Griess’s as they had a family get together due to Dewey’s sister’s funeral. (Our thoughts & prayers are with you and your family, Dewey!) We had special notes from the club-bers and leaders to present to our pastors and their wives with the theme being taken from Psalm 78:4. This verse is the theme verse for AWANA’s Celebra-tion of Art Rorheim starting AWANA 60 years ago and also the verse that Pastor Garry used to dedicate our staff in September. We also presented Pastor Garry/Bridget and Pastor Andy/Janae with a gift card from TLC/The Spa (Maybe Pastor Garry and Pastor Andy will choose to get haircuts! HA!!!) We ended the evening with the clubbers and staff giving our pastors and their wives a hug, “high five”, etc. and a snack of a gra-nola bar and juice/ Gatorade. We are so grateful for the godly pastoral staff that we have here at Zion that so faithfully serve our congregation and serve/pray for the AWANA staff and clubbers! Events coming up in November: We will still have Fun Fair on October 31st yet to do. Thank you so much for all of the candy that has been donated for the evening! November 7th - Missions Sunday with Hans Wilhelm as our special devotion speaker. We will be hearing about his mission work in China.

November 14th – Grand Prix Staff meeting following club on Sunday, November 21st. We will be planning our Birthday Party for Jesus and Caroling to Zion’s shut-ins on December 5th and the Skating Party on January 9th when we return in 2011.

~ COMMANDER COMMENTARY ~ My “cute clubber” story for this month is compli-ments of the Janecek family and it goes like this: Mom (Mickie) was practicing with Maddux on the way to AWANA the verses that he had learned in the previous few days. He was zipping right along with John 3:16 until the end when his version stated – “should not be banished but will have a normal life”. Older brother Quinton was trying to help and kept saying, “ETERNAL life”! To which Maddux finally said, “Why would you want to have a turtle’s life?” I LOVE IT!!! I can’t be more ecstatic to tell you about one of our new clubbers who, when presented with the Gospel by Linda in our T&T group, trusted Jesus as her per-sonal Lord & Savior! This is why we “keep on keeping on”!!! Welcome to the family of God, Jazlyn!!! All of Heaven is rejoicing!!! This little girl has an amazing story! She told Linda that she has wanted to come to AWANA for a long time and was finally invited by one of our current clubbers (because of Visitor Campaign!). Her parents are embroiled in a nasty divorce and so she has that to deal with but thank God she has a godly grandmother who has shared Jesus with her. Linda said that when she initially started going through the pamphlet that the clubbers are given first to complete, Jazlyn seemed very distracted. Then Linda noticed what the distraction was . . . a picture of Jesus that was hanging on the wall. So Linda jumped right into sharing the Gospel message. Jazlyn was so ready to put her trust in Christ!!! Please pray for Jazlyn! With the pending divorce, it may not always work out for her to come to our club meetings to continue on her spiri-tual journey and growth. However, I thank God that He is in control of this whole situation and His Hand will guard & protect Jazlyn. I have for a long time now said that it is going to be the little (negative) things in life that will “do me in”!!! On the “flip side” of that, though, it is a lot of “those little (positive) things” that remind me of God’s presence, bring me great joy and that warm/fuzzy feeling! *I had a former leader come to me one club night several weeks ago and said, “Hey, I am ready to come back and help with (whatever)?” It was like being given a blank check to fill in whatever amount I wanted!!! She stated that she would be my personal

MISSIONS: A recent email from Tom and Sandi Hof-mann, serving as AWANA missionaries in Flor-ida, stated that they have been in Florida for four months already. They have had some pit-falls and ask for your support. The Hofmann's would appreciate your prayers in regard to the following: - Pray for additional ministry partners. ("We are receiving just over half of our needed full time support.") - Pray that the Commander College will be an encouraging and meaningful time. - Pray that we (the Hofmann's) will be the en-couragers, trainers and friends our churches and clubs need. - Pray that the Hofmann's will find affordable health insurance as they were notified that the insurance they presently have has risen way be-yond their means. - Pray for a new club training on October 24th. - Pray for wisdom concerning new club planning. Thank you for your continued support to Tom and Sandi as they work to bring children to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. In His Service, Jerry Ross Mission Secretary

assistant and do whatever I needed! What a gift from God’s Hand to me!!! May God richly bless you Margaret for your servant’s heart!!! *There are a couple of things that also happened the day that we had our staff meeting that are minor – and may sound so ridiculous to those of you reading – but again, they may be small to others but are HUGE to me! Pastor Andy noticed that I was getting the taco salad meat defrosted and ready for the meeting and asked if I needed tomatoes chopped up for it. I told him that that would be great!!! One less thing for me to think about and have to do!!! Also that evening after club was over, the leaders, mostly my great group of LIT’s will get the tables and chairs set up in the Oasis for eating and con-ducting our meeting. Well, this particular night someone had remembered to also set up a table for my handouts and a white board that I was going to be using for part of the meeting. (Utterly ridiculous to those of you read-ing this – but HUGE to me and such a great reminder of God’s attention to the minor & major details in our lives!) In closing, I would just like to say that I am SO THANKFUL that GOD IS IN CONTROL OF EVERY-THING that touches our lives . . . whether it is a major thing like parents that are going through a divorce or chopped tomatoes and a table set up!!! I pray that you will join with me in thanksgiving and praise for our Great God ~ not only as we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday but every day of the year!!!

WOULD YOU HELP OUR PASTORS? If for some unfortunate reason you are

admitted to the hospital:

Please have someone call the church office at 632-8125 and let us know.

Please understand that the hospital will not call the

church or notify us of your hospitalization; therefore our only way of knowing you’re in the

hospital is if we are notified by you or your family. Our sincerest desire is to be there for you

during your hospitalization. Thanks for your help with this!

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS: Time has gone so fast since we started our fall

quarter in Sunday school. Classes are going well and attendance has been good.

We would like to take the time to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. We are so blessed here at Zion; I am so thankful for the teachers that prepare les-sons every week and teach our kids. I am thankful for Pastor Garry and Pastor Andy, and the love they have for kids. They care so much about every aspect of our church.

I did mention in the last newsletter that I would be letting you know about some important dates coming up regarding the Christmas program. Our first practice will be held on Dec. 5, second practice will be on Dec. 12, and 3rd practice will be held on Dec. 18. The first 2 practices will be held on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. We will serve a healthy snack to the kids before they go to Awana. We will let you know about the time on Dec. 18 which is the Saturday before the program. The Christmas program will be held on Dec. 19 at 5:00 pm., so please mark your calendars for these important dates. We will be handing our Christmas program parts soon.

Please let us know if you have any questions. This is a great time of fellowship for the kids and a chance for them to perform. Have a blessed Thanksgiving! Sharon Robin Deb . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

MOPS@NIGHT - MOPS moms are having a great time of fellowship We have averaged 10-12 moms each meeting, although we expect around 15 starting in November. Our MOPPETTS program is a great time for the kids. They get a good sup-per, play games or make a craft and even get in their pj's if they bring them. We are so glad to have our confirmation students who have dedicated their time to helping with our children. Thanks kids! In November, we will be making Take-and-Bake meals to stock our freezers. This will give us a couple of emergency meals we can just pull out for supper on those busy nights during the holiday season. Our speaker will be Pastor Andy on the 24th. He will be sharing how we can keep our kids spiritually fit. We are very excited about this topic! Please continue to pray for our MOPS moms. Sev-eral of them are struggling with issues like unemployment, relationships and serious illness. We appreciate your sup-port but covet your prayers! In Christ, Andi Hale

Jeremiah House The kids enjoyed their meal of chili, toasted cheese sandwiches, jello with fruit and Halloween cookies. They loved the sandwiches. There was a large crowd so we did not give many seconds. Next time we will plan for more. There were some adults that were needing a meal, which we served. At the end, we had 8 sandwiches left and we still had one more group. We were worried we would not have enough sandwiches. There were exactly 8 kids, so all was well. Next month, the week we serve will be the night of their Family Thanksgiving Dinner. Each church brings a 20 lb. cooked and sliced turkey. We are also asked to bring 17 dozen dinner rolls. If anyone would like to buy some dinner rolls, it would be appreciated. All the food and money donations were appreciated to help with our meals. We didn't receive any meat. If anyone wants to buy a package of hamburger or chicken, it would be welcomed. It takes quite a bit of food to serve 70 people. God has always provided. Wishing everyone a blessed Thanksgiving, Terry Martin
