After the extreme cold, and before all the freezing rain, conditions were pretty good at the 21st annual Ma-ple Syrup Stampede at Jocelyn Mountainview Centennial Grounds. 81 people registered for the event, with just a couple of no shows, which is about as many people as last year.

There were three races on Saturday, divided into groups by age and sex: a 2km classic, a 7km classic and a 14km skate. So, what’s the difference between classic cross country skiing and skate skiing? For starters, skate skis are shorter than classic skis and are slick on the bottoms.

Classic skis have grips or wax that you apply to them so you can grip the snow as you push your way for-ward. Skate skis are more like downhill skis than clas-sic skis. The poles for each are also dif-ferent. Skate poles are lon-ger and come up to about the lips and classic poles come up to underneath

If you weren’t wearing your skis it’s very likely you sank knee deep into the snow, but the conditions on the trails appeared to be pretty good. The children’s 2km race ended up taking a little longer than usual, thanks to a wrong turn which extended their trek. Volunteers from Jocelyn Rec were quick to make sure everyone found their way to the finish line and all children were accounted for. This did unfortunately cause a brief delay for the 7km start, leaving those ready to go a little chilly in their racing suits. The delay was just a few minutes and then they were off.

Red Fox We always get a visitor or two on our property, like most people on the island, and here lately we’ve had a different visitor raiding our compost. While our (not so)dear skunk friends have been hibernating, we’ve had a couple foxes running around our house and stealing leftovers from the compost. Cabbage and celery of all things!

Red foxes aren’t always red and can be found in a wide variety of colours from reds and browns to silver and black colour mutations. North American foxes are the same species, Vulpes vulpes, as their European and Asian counterparts. A pair of foxes will begin to search out a den after mating in December, usually an abandoned den of another animal such as a wood-chuck. The kits are born, between one and ten in a litter, between March and May. Cubs are weaned at a month old and will leave the den alone at around three months of age, when they are able to feed themselves. In the autumn, young foxes will travel to seek out new territories and it has been recorded that some young males will travel up to 250km from where they were born in search of their own territory.

Foxes have excellent hearing, eyesight and a keen sense of smell. They are mostly nocturnal, but can be active during the day, hunting prey in fields and prairies, flushing out voles and mice. In the winter, foxes eat small mammals, in the spring they will eat chicks and eggs from nesting birds and in the sum-mertime they will eat insects and berries. Foxes will cache their surplus food; bury it somewhere to retrieve at a later and safer time, which is exactly what the fox at our compost was doing. Even though we’ve seen plenty of voles dashing around the yard and footprints around our bushes, this guy seems to have taken up vegetarianism.
