Siemens HART or PROFIBUS Instruments and FDT ( Field Device Tool )
Connecting Siemens HART® or PROFIBUS instruments to FDT using SITRANS DTM and a communication interface
Objective: • Become familiar with the Siemens instrument wiring requirements • Become familiar with installing SITRANS DTM and associated EDDs • Become familiar with an FDT frame application such as PACTware.
Equipment: • Siemens HART or PROFIBUS instrument • Instruction manual for the instrument • SITRANS DTM • Siemens EDD for SITRANS DTM for
each instrument
• An FDT frame application such as PACTware
• Communication interface • Terminal screwdriver • PC or laptop
While every effort was made to verify the following information, no warranty of accuracy or usability is expressed or implied.
Overview:
FDT
FDT is a standard used in several software packages to set up a field instrument. Two examples are PACTware and Fieldcare.
FDT is referred to as a frame application because different software components called Device Type Managers ‘plug’ into the frame application.
All parameters are accessed through FDT, and configuration data is saved in projects.
Device Type Manager (DTM)
A DTM is a type of software that ‘plugs’ into FDT (similar to a printer driver that is installed on a computer and interfaces with a printer). There are two different types of DTM’s:
Communication DTM
The FDT frame application needs at least one communication DTM. The Communication DTM provides the link from the FDT to the communication channel used to communicate to the field instrument (for example, HART or PROFIBUS) Advanced networking is made possible by linking together different Communication DTMs. Please see www.fdtgroup.org for more details.
® HART is a registered trademark of the HART Communication Foundation.

The Instrument Device Type Manager (DTM)
To configure a field instrument , the FDT frame application requires the Device Type Manager (DTM) written for that instrument. SITRANS DTM is an EDDL interpreter that is written to the FDT specification Version 1.2 . To use it to connect to an instrument, you must first install SITRANS DTM, then install the instrument EDD written for SITRANS DTM. (An EDD is a text file written in Electronic Device Description Language that describes a particular field instrument.) To ensure that FDT connects properly, please complete the two processes outlined in Initial Setup:
• Installing SITRANS DTM • De-activating Buffers (for HART only)
This Application Guide discusses the following topics:
• Setting up an FDT frame application • Setting up a network • Adding the Siemens HART or PROFIBUS instrument to a project • Viewing and editing parameters
Initial Setup
Installing FDT
In order to use SITRANS DTM you need to install an FDT frame application that has been written to V1.2 of the FDT specification. Free versions are available from www.pactware.com
Installing SITRANS DTM
NOTE: SITRANS DTM is installed only once on a computer. If you have many different Siemens instruments, then for each instrument you install an EDD for SITRANS DTM.
You can download SITRANS DTM from the Siemens service and support website. Go to http://support.automation.siemens.com and drill down to Product Information/Automation Technology/Sensor systems/Process Instrumentation/Software & Communications. The direct link is: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/llisapi.dll?func=cslib.csinfo&lang=en&siteid=csius&aktprim=0&extranet=standard&viewreg=WW&objid=10807053&treeLang=en

NOTE: SITRANS DTM is only installed once on a computer. If you have many different Siemens instruments, then you install an EDD for SITRANS DTM for each instrument.
Installing the EDD
After installing SITRANS DTM, install the EDD for your field instrument. 1. Download the EDD install file from our website: go to the product page for your instrument and click on the side bar
labeled ‘Downloads’ and look for the EDD install file for SITRANS DTM. 2. Unzip the EDD install file and run the *.exe file. For example, for the LR250 you would have:
3. Accept the defaults. After the EDD for your instrument has been installed in SITRANS DTM, the DTM for that instrument appears when you run an FDT frame application. In some FDT frame applications, such as PACTware, you need to update the Device Catalog to view the newly-installed DTM.
1. Launch the FDT (for example, PACTware).
2. Click on Device Catalog to open the catalog.
3. Click on Update Device Catalog.

HART RS-232 serial Modem
De-Activating Buffers
This de-activation is required to align the FDT frame application with the HART RS-232 modem for Windows® XP operating Systems.
1. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel to begin configuration. 2. Double click System, select the Hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button. 3. Open Ports folder and double click the COM Port used by the system to open the Device Manager window. 4. Select the Port Settings tab and double click the Advanced button. 5. If the Use FIFO buffers radio box is selected, click to unselect.
6. Click OK to close out. Close all screens and then reboot.

Procedures
NOTE: Various instruments are used in the examples, but the same procedures apply to any Siemens instrument.
HART Wiring
Wiring the HART Modem to a HART instrument
NOTE: The following instructions will work for most applications. Please refer to www.hartcom.org for more details.
There are two different wiring methods:
1. For a HART instrument that receives power from an external source (current sink) connect the HART modem across a
250 Ohm resistor in series with the instrument.
2. For a HART instrument that provides power (current source) wire the 250 ohm resister across the 4-20 mA output of the instrument. Then wire the HART modem across the resistor.

Wiring the coupler to a PROFIBUS instrument
PROFIBUS configurations can vary according to the network equipment used. Below we show a simple example.
1. Using the instruction manual as a guide, terminate the wires inside the instrument housing to the appropriate terminals.
2. Connect the coupler to the instrument and to the PC.
NOTES:
• Siemens PROFIBUS PA Instruments are not polarity sensitive. • Devices may be either 2 wire or 4 wire: please check your instrument’s manual to determine which
type of device you are using. • A 2 wire device (shown below) does not have a separate power supply. • A 4 wire device uses a separate power supply, but is otherwise wired as shown below. • For the PC / Laptop, a PROFIBUS Card (i. e. CP5512 or 5613) and the corresponding communication
DTM for that card are required.

6. In the left side of the screen double-click on your instrument to open up the off-line table.
Online configuration
To connect the instrument and configure parameters online: 1. In the menu tree on the left side of the screen, right-click on the instrument and in the drop-down menu click on
Connect.

Parameterization from the drop-down menu.
Online/offline Operation In the FDT frame application, you can select either online or offline configuration as shown above. The online configuration screen allows you to run quick start wizard, and view diagnostic information. The offline table displays all the parameters in a table format. To update the offline table so that it matches the parameters in the field device you have to 'Load from device'. You can have both the online and offline screens up at the same time. It is very important to remember that changes made in the online screens will be sent to the field instrument but will not be made to the data in the offline table. To update the offline data you have to 'Load from device'.

APPLICATION GUIDE
Quick Start Wizard Quick start wizards provide an easy way to set up a field instruments. Most of our EDDs for SITRANS DTM include this function. The wizard is part of the online configuration. The last step provides a summary of all changes. You have two choices: • You can apply the changes to the offline parameters (by clicking apply). Please note that the offline dialog screen must be
closed for the apply button to work correctly. If the offline dialog box is open, and you press apply, all changes will be lost. This is a design issue with the FDT frame application.
• Or you can transfer the changes to the instrument.
Product Manuals Product manuals are not part of the DTM. To download a product manual go to product page for your instrument (for example, the SITRANS LR250 product page is at www.siemens.com/LR250). Click on Instructions and Manuals under the More Info heading on the right hand side. The direct link is: http://www.automation.siemens.com/w1/process-instrumentation-products-systems-4638.htm
