Hello. My name is Akmal Akbarov and I’m from Tajikistan. For the moment, I’ve been working as a project engineer at the International Secretariat for Water (Canada) for 7 years. Our organization has been implementing the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation project in the Republic of Tajikistan (northern part, Sughd region). The project is funded by SDC. I am involved in preparation of hydraulic designs and construction estimates, capacity building of the rural specialists etc. We have built several drinking water supply systems and provided 39 000 rural population with safe drinking water.

I am a father of two boys and a pretty daughter. I like reading and fixing domestic hard‐ware and autos. My native language is Tajik (Persian). I speak Russian, English and a bit Uzbek.

Samir ALIBABIC, Project Manager / GIS Administrator, Una Consulting Ltd. & Aquasan Network in B&H, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Samir works as Geographic Information System (GIS) Engineer and Database Adminis‐trator. His duties comprise design, development and maintenance of geographic information systems, development of databases, data entry, spatial analysis, hydraulic modelling, cartography, graphic processing and drafting of drawings, project designs, plans, maps, development of study‐project documents, staff training and technical advising for application of information technologies, maintenance and procurement of hardware and software, system administration, contracting and management of IT projects. He joined the Una Consulting team in February 2009.

Samir is a Project Manager for Aquasan Network in B&H leading the project “Reduction of non‐revenue water in South‐East Europe”. Recently he joined the Aquasan Network in B&H’s team responsible for mainstreaming DRR in Bosnia and Herzegovina context. He is a member of Aquasan Network in B&H since its establishment in 2010.

By vocation, Samir is an electrotechnical engineer, majored in information technolo‐gies. He expanded his knowledge and skills through several certified courses (ESRI, Autodesk, Microsoft). Samir is a fluent English speaker.

I’m a Bolivian economist with Master’s Degrees in Public Policies and Business Adminis‐tration. My fields of expertise are: International Cooperation, Public Policy, Climate Change, Integrated Water Management and Solid Waste Management I have over 20 years of working experience in Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica and El Salvador, with international organizations such as The Inter‐American Development Bank, The World Bank, DFID, European Commission, and the Dutch, Spanish and Canadian Development Agencies. Luz Angela BERNAL, Senior National Program Officer, SDC, Colombia

My name is Luz Angela, from Colombia. I have a master's degree in rural development. I work for SDC Colombia as senior national program officer primarily in the humanitarian field supporting projects related to the rehabilitation of the living conditions of IDPs, preparedness and prevention of natural hazards and, recently, the adaptation of the model SABA Peru to Colombia.

Water has always been present in my professional life. I was advising the "Water as a public good" campaign led by a foundation called ECOFONDO. In the humanitarian field, WASH has been a major issue in the recovery phase in areas affected by the armed conflict: collective access to water collection systems, microfiltration, etc. Currently, through a comprehensive proposal in Rural Water and Sanitation in 4 munici‐palities, as SDC we’re contributing to the transition towards post‐conflict considering water as an axis for peacebuilding or most commonly named territorial peace.


Harald BIER, DRR Delegate for the Swiss Red Cross, Haiti

Harald Bier is a field‐oriented DRR specialist with a passion for the WASH sector. Before doing a Master in Humanitarian Action and working in DRR and livelihood projects in Haiti and Djibouti, he was earning his living as a consultant for Terra Preta soil construc‐tion and ‐sanitation. At the moment he is back in Haiti, working as DRR Delegate for the Swiss Red Cross.

I am a WASH Engineer, and have been working for the last two years as one of the Medair HQ WASH Advisors, based in Switzerland. I am offering strategic and technical advice to Headquarters and the field, as well as training and coaching to Medair field WASH staff, in emergency and transitional programming. I previously worked in D.R. Congo as a WASH Project Manager with Medair and did short missions with other organisations in Uganda, Haiti and Benin. I also worked in France as a Project Manager in an engineering company, overseeing roads and utilities infrastructure works.

I have a Masters in Water Science and Engineering from Polytech’Montpellier (France), 2007, and a Masters in Water Management, Community Water and Sanitation, from Cranfield University (UK), 2007.

Sanjay has a professional background in Policy Research & Advocacy and worked widely on waste management, water and sanitation, recycling value chains and integration of informal sector in developing and transitional countries of Azerbaijan, Egypt, India, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. He prepared the National Strategy for Integrated Solid Waste Management for Bhutan along with revising its National Waste Management Regulations under Skat. Harold is working for the Dutch NGO Simavi as Programme Officer WASH for Africa and specifically Tanzania and Ghana. DRR is an integral part of the projects and programmes of Simavi to enable long‐term sustainability with the use of the FIETS Sustainability Approach. By specifically identifying the Financial, Institutional, Environmental, Tech‐nical and Social sustainability it is possible to reduce disaster risks for the life time of the provided WASH systems and services. Elsbeth HORBATY, International Country Programme Advisor, HELVETAS Swiss Inter‐cooperation, Pakistan

Born in 1954 in Winterthur, Switzerland and the mother of a son. I have spent half my life in Switzerland and the other in Nicaragua, Ireland, USA, Mexico and Argentina. I have witnessed dictatorships, a revolution, restructuring programs of the WB and many different approaches to development policies mainly in Latin America. Initially I made an apprenticeship as a clerk, started in 1984 to work as a journalist and was a radio reporter for over 10 years for BBC Radio London in Spanish. Since 1997 I have been working in development cooperation, the first decade in the field in Nicaragua.

In 2007, after my return to Switzerland, I was the Head of the Latin America Dept. at Caritas Switzerland and specialized in specific programs in Cuba, Chile and Haiti. The last two years I ran a program for Senior Experts for Swisscontact. I have specialized in issues of civil society, psychosocial approach and systemic organizational development. From on August 2015, I will be working as country programme advisor in Islamabad.

After my Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences from the ETH, Zurich, I worked as a project manager for the private sector as well as for the government. For most of my professional career I worked in the field of water supply, sanitation, water protection and therefore integrated water resource management as well as environmental issues in general. In this context DRR was an important issue to be considered.

Beside of being member of SDC/SHA expert group Water & Environmental Sanitation, I currently work as project manager and consultant for an engineering company mainly in the field of wastewater treatment and water supply.

Halidou KOANDA, Country Representative, WaterAid, Burkina Faso

Halidou Koanda is the Country Representative for WaterAid in Burkina Faso since June 2010. He worked for CREPA from 2017 to 2010 as researcher in charge of planning methods in CREPA. Halidou Koanda did his PhD at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne (Switzerland) in collaboration with Eawag/Sandec.

WaterAid is an international NGO operating in Burkina Faso since 2003 in the WASH sector. The programmes cover advocacy and policy, service delivery and capacity building. At community level, WaterAid is supporting local authorities for better management of water resources.

Olivier KOULLO NDENA, National Program Officer, SDC, Chad

Olivier Koullo Ndéna has over ten years of experience working in the domain of education, health and water. He is National Program Officer for the SDC Chad office since august 2013. Before he worked as Program officer for the CHAD AIDS Fund, for GIZ in Burundi on behalf of France Volontaires.

He is engaged on matters of access to safe drinking water and sanitation that directly involve, empower and benefit rural communities. He is in charge of SDC contribution to UNICEF water supply and sanitation program in two districts and of SDC Health system strengthening program in the same districts. He is also supporting communities tackling problems of HIV, reproductive health and public administration and management of health and water sector. I am a geographer with six years working experience in humanitarian aid and development cooperation. I’m a WASH expert from Kenya. I’ve been working since 2007 in the water & sanitation sector in developing countries (Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan). Besides this, I have been deployed to respond to emergencies in South Sudan, Mozambique and most recently in Liberia during the Ebola outbreak. In December 2013, I joined HEKS South Sudan as the WASH Advisor. I have also supported HEKS water projects in Ethiopia & Eritrea. Asha Suleiman MSENGWA, Project Officer, PATUTA, Dodoma, Tanzania

I’m an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) and hold a Bachelor Degree of Science General, and yet to finalize a Master’s degree of Science in Health Informatics at the University of Dar es Salaam. My work as an Environmental Health Officer covers 23 years. At the moment I’m working with PATUTA, a Tanzanian NGO as Project Officer in the Simavi/MKAJI Programme. The overall goal of the MKAJI project is “to improve the quality of public health services provision by improving access to WASH at 100 public primary health facilities in the 7 districts of the Dodoma region.

My responsibility within the project is to facilitate the assessment of the existing level of hygiene knowledge, attitudes and practices of health staff with an aim to tailor training needs accordingly. By conducting training on Hygiene measures for staff of health facilities on medical equipment, Hygiene in the building and sanitation facilities and Personal Hygiene, the focus is on protection of personal health as well as the health of patients, staff of the Health Facility, Village Health workers and Traditional Birth Attendants. Last, but certainly not least, I´m also conducting supervision and monitoring of WASH facilities at the Public Primary health facilities and communities in the programme intervention area, and I´m involved in advocacy on WASH issues through various channels and platforms.

Philippe REYMOND, Project Coordinator, Eawag/Sandec, Egypt

Project coordinator at the Department of Water and Sanitation in Developing Countries (Sandec) at Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, environmental “social” engineer, I have been based for the last five years in Cairo, Egypt, focusing on how to scale‐up small‐scale sanitation systems for the numerous unserved hamlets in the Nile Delta, in collaboration with the Egyptian Utility.

My main field of expertise is sanitation planning, including faecal sludge management, participatory approaches and urban agriculture. I had the opportunity to gather experience in a number of countries, including Togo, Ghana, Ecuador, India, Bangladesh and North Korea. Another important activity for me is capacity‐building and knowledge dissemination in the field of sanitation planning. If sanitation became my main reason for travelling, I have long been passionate about culture, food, history and geopolitics, with the bicycle as favourite transport means for longer trips.

Eduart RUMANI, National Programme Officer for Infrastructure and Energy, Embassy of Switzerland, Albania

My professional situation: As an NPO for Infrastructure and Energy (since 2005) at the Embassy of Switzerland in Albania, I am in charge of facilitating and coordinating the identification, and preparation work for the assessment, study, design, implementation and evaluation of projects on water supply and sewerage in urban areas. Given the nature of infrastructure projects, my work is focused on macro (policy and strategic framework), meso (corporate development of utilities) and micro levels (follow up the cycle of the project management). I have done post graduate University studies on IWRM at Berne University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland (2007‐2008).

My motivation for this workshop: This is a good opportunity for me to gain experience, learn from good practices, share knowledge, exchange views and get practical know‐how from staff, desk officers, researchers, consultants, other sector specialists and wider development practitioners from different countries to reflect together on various aspects of the DRR and WASH related issues.

My relation to the topic: My most relevant experience regarding DRR is related to the flood crisis of 2010 and 2015 which hit respectively the Shkodra and Fier regions.

My professional background is in rural & environmental engineering (EPFL) with more than 20 years of experience in strategy development and program management as well as design, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of global initiatives, programs and projects in the fields of rural infrastructure development, water and environmental sanitation, mobility and transport, and soil‐water management. I am based in Tashkent, Uzbekistan since 2012 and my main duties are advising the Swiss funded water programme in Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan), supporting the Cooperation offices’ staff in technical issues and representing SDC in water related platforms. I am dealing with projects in the field of IWRM, integrated watershed management, irrigation, WASH and DRR. I contribute to improving the knowledge management within the Swiss funded projects and partners and animate the Sub‐RésEAU Central Asia. I hold a diploma in Environmental and Survey Engineering EPF, have previously working in Switzerland, Moldova and France and spend most of my time travelling in the Region, as well as with my wife and our three children.
