Cheshvan. The only

Also, in the month of November, we

And there appears to be a bit less

humor free flowing. So I want to

One of the tasks they were assigned

was to use a given story and biblical

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The following is the High Holy Day address I gave on

Kol Nidre. I was asked to publish it so that those who

missed it would get a chance to see what I said. En-

closed in your Chai Lites is a flyer with the pledge card

if you wish to catch up and make your HHD donation.

I am Linda Perkel, President of Agudas Israel Congre-

gation and I welcome you to Erev Yom Kippur and to

Agudas Israel on behalf of the lay leadership of your

congregation, your Board of Trustees.

Each year the Jewish calendar renews itself. So, as I was

considering how to address you tonight, I was struck by

the remembrance of Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.

So yes, Hineni – Here I am. I vaguely remember do-

ing this before.

In fact, this is the fourth time that I have had the honor

to address you on this awesome night, a fact that I can

easily remember without the help of a ground hog. I am

so proud to serve as your temple president and I find

this opportunity to speak with you humbling and yet

filled with so much happiness and joy. You might think

I’m pulling your leg with that last comment, but it is a

true joy to look out into our congregation and see this

closely knit congregational family who care for each

other, love to practice our faith and tradition and love

though the Torah, in less than 160 characters!

1) Creation Story: “It was all because of God!

2) Call of Abraham: “GO!”

3) Jacob’s Ladder: “Mom, just had the weirdest

dream!”

4) Joseph’s story: “Stay away from the bros”

5) Burning Bush: “What did you say His name

was?”

6) Ten Commandments: “Ten Rules – No stealing

No Killing No Fooling Around”

7) Holiness Code: “r u b-ing good 2 the old n

strange sez Lev 19”

8) Priestly Benediction: “If you truly want blessings,

it’s the priestly blessing”

9) V’ahavta: “Love your God with all your heart,

soul, & might”

Death of Moses: “ L Woe is me!”

10) I hope you have enjoyed reading these as much

as we enjoyed creating them. We look forward to

taking a journey through the Torah and through our

lives together this coming year.

Warmly

Rabbi Rachael Jackson

our temple. It is truly a blessing to greet familiar faces

and welcome guests.

I understand well that each of us is here for different rea-

sons, for our own, often deeply personal reasons. Please

recall with me now when you began your Agudas Israel

journey and why you first stepped inside our doors. Had

you just moved here and were looking for a Jewish home

for yourself and your family and joined us for Shabbat?

Did you hear that we had an amazing Rabbi? Were you

compelled to come here because your heart or your spirit

had been broken or bruised? Had you recently committed

to Judaism and needed a place to pursue your spiritual

goals? Had you experienced the loss of a loved one and

you needed a tender touch and compassionate ear? Were

you concerned about the changes in our political and so-

cial climate? Were you in search of community?

Each one of us has a story about why we first entered

this sacred place. Our stories are similar and they are dif-

ferent, they are relevant, and they are filled with richness

and diversity, just like each one of us.

We love our amazing Rabbi and all that you see hap-

pening here during these holy days and throughout the

entire year could not happen without her. But Agudas

Israel’s true essence, the real reason we love this commu-

nity...this Jewish family of ours, is the people with whom

you are seated right now, the people who open their arms

and embrace you without asking permission, and kiss

your cheek every time you come in . . . people who are

happy to see you, and simply want to be Jewish with

you. I am speaking about the genuine love and affection

that everyone here shares, no matter your age, your stature,

your gender, or your position in life.

Think for a moment about those who have made you

feel the warmth, the light, the welcoming and accepting

nature of our temple family. Think about the fact that

you, too, sometimes reach out and hug and plant that kiss

on those whom you see at temple. It is always a blessing

to be enthusiastically Jewish at Agudas Israel. It feels

good. In these unsettled times, it feels especially comfort-

ing. And to those of you who may only walk through our

doors for these holy days and other special occasions,

you should know that these people are here for you, too.

This amazing community of people, people just like you,

are here for you. Every year, every month, every week,

every day.

When Peter and I first walked through these synagogue

doors, we had no idea that our Jewish journey would be

formed and so enriched by the people of Agudas Israel

who have now, over these last years, become our dear

The Chai Lites Newsletter

Although we did not hold a meeting in September, due

to the High Holidays, Brotherhood members and volun-

teers kept very busy with a variety of tasks and projects in

and around the synagogue.

Thanks again to Steve and Judith Levinson for allowing

us to access their property to cut the bamboo branches

needed for decorating the sukkah.

friends and family. More than 2 years ago, when Peter

was injured and subsequently experienced many health

problems, we were blown away by the loving outreach

and support from our Agudas Israel community. We

continue to experience the blessing of your friendship,

comfort and support, and we are grateful.

But you know, when I first came here did not think

about the payroll, the heating and air conditioning, the

roof or what it must take to maintain this sacred space

on a daily basis. However, I soon realized the responsi-

bility I have to support and maintain this temple not just

for me, but also for the others who would step inside to

worship and to learn. For those who will follow us.

Simply put, it is all of our responsibility to financially

support Agudas Israel to the best of our ability so that

the values, the commitments, and the best of Agudas

Israel can continue. I believe, as does Rabbi Jackson,

that you deserve nothing less. Rabbi consistently gives

above and beyond what we expect of her. It is her lead-

ership and the example she sets every day that inspire,

educate, and enrich our enjoyment of our temple. It

seems only right that we reciprocate with the best that

is in us.

Although BiIl Murray never talked about temple ex-

penses in Ground Hog Day, it bears reminding that

your Membership dues only covers 6o% of the costs of

heating, cooling and maintaining our building as well

as supporting our Rabbi, office manager and program-

ming. That leaves 40% of our budgeted expenses de-

pendent on your donations.

We need your help to sustain us. Please understand

how important your contribution is tonight and how

meaningful it is to our existence.

So how much to give? That is the great question. Yogi

Berra once said that hitting was 90% mental and only

50% physical. So if we follow that formula and you

give 140% of what you gave last year, that would

work. But what if you weren’t here last year?

Let me help you. The Talmud says that charity is

equal to all the commandments.

There are many reasons to give. Some people give

because they think it will help them to be inscribed in

the book of life for another year. We are in no position

financially or spiritually to pass judgement on

that. You can give tonight because you can enjoy our

services and our sense of community. Or you can give

because this is such a beautiful evening. You can give

because each of these, or any one of these, has touched

you tonight, or touched you during Rosh Hashanah, or

will touch you at tomorrow’s services. Or you can give

because you know how much we need it. After all, this is

your Rabbi, this is your synagogue!!!

I know that we have all been touched by the needs and

reached into our pockets to help those who have suffered

great losses due to hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

And, there are many others throughout the world who ask

for our help. The need for Tikkun Olam is great. Tonight

though is about us, about Agudas Israel.

Please contribute joyfully and generously, and allow us

to continue to do all that we do for this community — to

provide, enhance and further establish the spiritual plat-

form from which we all benefit. I am happy to share with

you that each and every member of your Agudas Israel

Board has already pledged their High Holy Day Commit-

ment. Hineni.

A sweet, healthy and happy new year to each and every

one of you, and please accept my heartfelt thanks for al-

lowing me the amazing opportunity to serve as your Presi-

dent. It has truly been my honor.

The Sisterhood Judaica Boutique booth at The

HardLox Jewish Food and Heritage Festival in his-

toric downtown Asheville was a great success. Not

only was it a financial success, but thanks to Teri

Nadler-Thorz’s vision, it gave Agudas Israel a great

presence and recognition for being the only congrega-

tion in Hendersonville.

Many thanks to all of the volunteers, who helped

shlepp, set up, sell, pack up, and shlepp again back to

Agudas. Special shout out to Teri and Michael Thorz,

Sam Gess, Linda Sauter, and Alan Cooper who

worked all day from an early start to a late finish, as

well as our Rabbi who cheerfully greeted and wel-

Thanks also especially to Alan Cooper and Dave

Monoson for tending to various maintenance and repair

issues in and outside the building, costs for which were

covered by donations from Brotherhood. I mention this

because most congregants are not aware of the amount

of work and dedication that is needed to keep the build-

ing in good shape. Repairs which are often not notice-

able, such as fixing cracks in the walls, or installing and

painting new hand rails leading to the Gazebo, fixing the

memorial wall etc..

All of this volunteer work, including security duty every

weekend and during the High Holy Days, is provided by

our Brotherhood members who take the time from their

busy weekly personal chores (and “Honey Do” Lists)

and in between doctors’ appointments, to help the Agu-

das Israel Congregation operate as smoothly as possible

and to ensure the comfort and safety of all our members.

With the coming winter months, we are losing some of

our manpower as a number of members migrate south to

Florida to bask in the sun and enjoy their “Early Bird”

specials. So those of us brave souls who are left behind

will continue to hold the fort until they return next

spring.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you

who are migrating south for the winter a wonderful time

and we look forward to seeing you all back again in

2018.

With the changing season, it is now time for us to en-

joy the fall colors, and I recommend that you take the

time to tour the Blue Ridge region with your family and

friends, to view the beauty of our countryside, and take

some great pictures that you can share with others.

Shalom, Michael Thorz, Agudas Israel Brotherhood

comed so many people into our booth.

kah luncheon – no charge for Sisterhood members,

nukah with your Sisterhood.

In lieu of a January program, we are encouraging

our Sisterhood members to participate in the MLK: A

Day On, A Day of Service (Martin Luther King Day)

for a day of community service on Monday, January

15th (details to follow).

We continue to plan exciting programs every month

for you to enjoy (thank you to our Programming Vice

President, Joan Kershner); giving you a reason to be

part of a very special Sisterhood. Watch for a full cal-

endar of events coming this fall and winter. We hope

you will take advantage of our programs and partici-

pate. If you have a program suggestion, please do not

hesitate to contact Joan or myself.

Trees in Israel when you want to honor a Bar/Bat

Mitzvah or other simcha (birthday or anniversary) or

make a memorial tribute for a loved one.

It is never too late to join Sisterhood…We invite all

new members, those who have not previously joined,

or those women who want to rejoin, to contact Sherry

Harris, Membership Secretary, for more information.

Without YOU we are one woman short! Sisterhood continues to be an integral part of the

workings of Agudas Israel. Join the fun, share in the

camaraderie! Let me know how I can help make your

membership more rewarding.

Shalom,

Bonnie Cooper, Sisterhood President

THE PRESIDENT’S CLUB The President’s club is proud to announce the current and

growing membership. Membership requires that a five year

commitment of at least $500 per year, in excess of current

dues be made.

It is the objective of the members of the President’s Club to erase our defi-

cit. We intend for it to become nothing but a historical memory.

In compliance with Henderson County Fire Safety Regula-tions, all fire exit

doors, used for exiting and entering our building, must be kept clear of all obstructions, including but not limited to unattended motor vehicles which will cause delay in access for fire-rescue and police. In addition, it will hin-der people inside our building in attempt-ing to evacuate in case of emer-gency: There are five (5) fire exit doors; the main entrance doors under the covered driveway, two west far side doors which lead out into the parking lot area; the fourth is located to the rear of the library which is also used as an evacuation point and for the pick-up and /or delivery of items. The fifth door is also used as an evacuation point, for delivery and pickups, and not to be used to leave standing unattended vehicles parked." In addition, I ask everyone to make sure when they utilize our parking spaces that they lock their vehicles and make sure that valuables are either removed or locked away. In case the building has to be evacu-ated, the two double doors in the Social Hall, and the northeast door located in the Sanctuary, are to be used by the oc-cupants inside the building that leads to the "Founders Garden". which is the des-ignated gathering point for safety.

Thank you, Al Rosen, VP Building & Grounds

IMPORTANT NOTICE! ANNOUNCING... the next program in our

quarterly Friday night Speaker Series...

This Speaker Series has two purposes: one is to

inform the congregation about the impressive num-

ber of organizations in Henderson County that pro-

vide services to our residents and a second reason

is to provide opportunities for Tikkun Olam wherever possible.

On Friday November 17th at 7:30, our guest speaker will be Ju-

dith Long, the Executive Director of The Free Clinics in Hender-

sonville.

The Free Clinics has a serious and important mission in our

community. This organization provides FREE medical care to low

income uninsured residents of Henderson and Polk counties. In

addition, help is available to individuals who have insurance but

face a coverage cap in their individual plans and need assistance in

paying for their medications. Working very hard to augment our

local health care system and bridge the gaps wherever they may be

are numerous volunteers and healthcare partners. Offering a vari-

ety of programs,The Free Clinics constantly strive to make our

most vulnerable neighbors healthier and better able to face their

health challenges.

Join us on the November 17th when Judith Long joins us to ex-

plain the vital services this organization provides.

We look forward to her visit.

Lifecycle Moments

November is National Caregiver Month! Jewish Family Services of WNC Offers Support to

Family Caregivers! Jewish Family Services of WNC (JFS) offers programs and services to support the needs of family members providing care or support for an elder or for an individual with a disability. Family members often find themselves overwhelmed by their caregiving responsibilities, and all too often may overlook needs for their own self-care and health. A caregiver’s need for respite time for themselves can be met by enrolling their loved one in the JFS Elder Club. This program serves older adults of all faiths who would benefit from socializa-tion, friendship, exercise, stimulating activities, and a nutritious lunch, in an enjoyable, structured group setting. Professional staff and trained volunteers facilitate and supervise the program. Elder Club is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Asheville, and on Wednesdays in Hendersonville. Transportation may be arranged to each location. The Elder Club provides the caregiver with the peace of mind that their family member is safe and well cared for. Caregiver support services at JFS also include: care coordina-tion and guidance to services and community resources, pro-vided by a JFS Social Worker, and individual mental health coun-seling with a JFS Licensed Clinical Social Worker. JFS accepts most Medicare, BCBS-NC, and other insurance. Inquire to con-firm your individual health insurance coverage. A sliding fee scale based on income is available for uninsured individuals. Jewish Family Services of WNC (JFS) is a social service agency providing a comprehensive continuum of care for all the people of Western North Carolina. In addition to the Elder Club, counseling services, and social work assistance, information and referrals, JFS provides Jewish holiday kosher meal deliveries, and a food pantry; JFS also administers WNC Jewish Federation Keren Ami Funds, and the Atlanta-based Jewish Educational Loan Fund for interest-free student loans. We also offer meaning-ful and rewarding opportunities for volunteer service, and we are currently in need of additional volunteers for Elder Club programs in Asheville and Hendersonville. JFS services and programs are open to all people regardless of faith, race, color, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, country of origin, age, or ability. For further information or to make an appointment for any JFS service, call: 828-253-2900 or email: [email protected]. To learn more about JFS, please visit: www.jfswnc.org. WNC Jewish Federation Supports Jewish Family Services of WNC! WNC Jewish Federation (WNCJF) is the only central fundraising organization for the Jewish communities of Western North Caro-lina. WNCJF raises and distributes funds to sustain our commu-nity organizations that make our strong, vibrant community what it is and what it will continue to be. Jewish Family Services of WNC is the only Jewish social service agency in Western North Carolina and we depend on Federation for a very significant an-nual allocation in order to continue to provide services to hun-dreds of deserving individuals in our region each year.

Bernd and Toby Linder received the 2017 Richard C. and

Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award. As the Community

Foundation of Henderson County’s most prestigious award, it

recognizes community leaders who live with a focus on personal

philanthropy. As determined and visionary philanthropists, the

Linders have stated “We are interested in trying to improve the

quality of life for future generations in Henderson County.”

We, as a congregation, are very proud to have the Linders as

members of our community here at Agudas Israel.

For 50+ years, through a specific donation in her will,

Francee Sherman, has made a specific donation for fresh flow-

ers for High Holy Day services. The flowers are beautiful. This

is an ongoing donation, and Agudas Israel is extremely appre-

ciative of this generous donation.

On Saturday, November 18, 2017 from 1:30 to 4 pm there will

be a Celebration of the Life of Carola Cohn. The gathering will

be at The Mountain Lodge and Convention Center. Their tele-

phone # is 828-693-9910. The location is 755 Upward Road in

Flat Rock, NC. If you plan on coming, please RSVP to

[email protected] or call Nancy Cohn at 805-461-1212.
