It will soon be a year that AIDS Help became officially known as A.H. of Monroe County, Inc., or simply AH, and

people still ask: why?

In reality, it was more a public acknowledgement and tweak to our community branding because,

since 2009, we’ve been legally known as that to the Internal Revenue Service, on Federal, State, county and philanthropic grant applications, as a 501 (c) (3).

Since 2012 many ASOs (AIDS Service Organizations) in America were altering

their name to reflect a new reality: that people with HIV, when medically adherent, will never have an AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) diagnosis, and that people living with AIDS had also seen amazing results from advanced treatments and were living longer. The infection is manageable.

A logo is shorthand, intended to do many things: anchor a business card, adorn letterhead and e-mail signatures, provide directional and

geographic signage, identifiable and memorable to the public. It should quickly reflect or imply the organization’s mission. If the design is wise, as was the circular clasped hands logo designed by JT Thompson, it becomes a touchstone. Altering that was a tall and tricky order. We engaged stellar talent to do so, including Jane Carper 2016 FANTASY FEST Queen and the superb artist who designed our glorious mosaic at Poinciana Royale.

Gradually, an aesthetic emerged. It would incorporate the blues and greens associated with the Keys’ waters. It should be all-inclusive, not

exclusive, with a nod to our LGBTQ+ origins but to also suggest the other shades that color our Keys community through diversity and equality. It also had to communicate that our Agency is not just about one component. Our focus has broadened to focus also on the sexual health and general wellness for our friends and neighbors and family...to provide a voice for the voiceless...always proactive in our island chain’s struggle to balance health and housing.

The entirety of our employees, but especially Medical and Housing Case Management, provide valuable help with needs assessments, linkage and

direction to local resources. Think of us as a form of GPS…we may not be able to take you there, but we can show the way. I am reminded of this when someone came to our office, without an appointment. They weren’t HIV-positive. They didn’t want an HIV-test. They needed guidance on insurance. This we call “Resource Identification”. ANY resident of Monroe County can speak with us about accessing various eligibilities and requirements.

This includes Housing. Having a roof over one’s head IS care, whether you are a veteran, low-income, the elderly or a person living with a

disability. AH currently owns 96 units for people, and new tax-credit funding is enabling us to re-invent Marty’s Place (with 16 units) into Marty’s Place Residential Care Center, with 47 units, including 12 ADA units and 35 Handicap accessible units, plus clinic space and a multi-purpose room.

AIDS is not archaic, by any means, and to even consider it so does a disservice to those who have prevailed through physical hardships too

numerous to count. Our Agency honors those no longer present – founders and clients -- and they walk beside us.

The conjoining of Health with Housing points toward our future. Our “facelift” highlights all that we do: A.H. for AIDS/HIV, Affordable

Housing and Accessible Healthcare.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT

For 2018, as Board President of AH, I gave a lot of thanks, and I want to acknowledge that gratitude in

the space provided me in our Annual Report.

I am inspired by an Agency and Board that offers amazing professionalism, goal fullfillment and

empathy for the human condition.

I am thankful for the consumers who wisely avail themselves of AH services. They have chosen not

to just to survive with HIV, but to thrive.

I am humbled by a community so full of compassion it forms a wave that carries us all.

Specifically: I still reflect on our 2018 Candidates as they vied for Fantasy Fest Royalty. Each day they began anew and, by October 19th, Jennifer,

Diamond Dave, Larry, Bernadette and Mike had raised over $275,000. All five were cheered, crowned, caped and celebrated…yet the evening had even more commendations. The Agency recognized:

Christopher ElwellPresident, A.H. of Monroe County, Inc.

The Consumer Advisory Committee, or CAC, of A.H. of Monroe County, Inc. (AH) altered its bylaws in January

2018 to address the diversity of the community we serve, encompassing all residents of AH-owned or managed housing, plus Agency healthcare clients.

In other words: we became inclusive instead of exclusive.

We convene our monthly meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at 11:30-1:00 p.m. in the

Community Room of Poinciana Royale, 1341 McCarthy Lane. Lunch and beverages are provided during what is typically an hour-long meeting*. A

A MESSAGE FROM THECONSUMER ADVISORY COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN

A. H. of Monroe County, Inc. Mission StatementCounseling, Testing, Linkage to Care

The object, general purpose and nature of this Corporation shall be to establish and maintain in Monroe County, Florida, a Corporationthat will provide case managed health care, food programs, counseling, housing, clinical, and other supportive and volunteer services.

I am thankful for The SMART Ride 14 and 15 and the Key West Mile Markers. Their unflagging devotion, their fierce advocacy and relentless

quest to reach the next financial plateau -- essentially holding two Rides in one year -- was staggering to witness.

‘Taste of Key West’ and Vintners Dinner wouldn’t be possible without the participation of restaurants, chefs and a corps of volunteers who

never quite know what they signed up for: the hot sun, the chance of raindrops, a new venue unfamiliar to them. Yet every year, they sacrifice time and money so that AH maintains financial solid footing.

Finally: I thank you for indulging me this public thank you.

more informed consumer makes you a better member of our community and One Human Family.

You should also know that, throughout the year, the CAC also presents, facilitates or supports special events presented by healthcare

professionals, pharmaceutical firms, lawyers, tax preparers, insurance navigators and other professionals to help better inform consumers of issues relating to HIV, housing and health issues. During the Holidays, we also provide Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners!

Our goal remains the same: transparency and collaboration -- to keep our consumers of AH fully-informed of housing, medical, nutritional

and community events and programs while also incorporating their input and suggestions.

Valerie Edgington, whose willingness to roll up her sleeves and pitch in earned her the ‘Above and Beyond’ Award

Beth Moyes (of the annual Red Shirt Run), who took home a ‘So Very Dedicated’ Award

The President’s Award went to Stephen Aube (who shares his own thoughts on this page), who works tirelessly as head of our Consumer Advisory Committee and was also cited by POZ magazine as an individual living with HIV, over 50, committed to ending the HIV epidemic.

And the Knights of Fantasy Fest went to my own parents, the Key West Iron Chefs, whose culinary gifts are exceeded only by their willingness to donate their time and money to fundraising. I am so proud of them.

A.H. of Monroe County, Inc.I. AIDS Help of Monroe County: Treatment, Prevention, Housing Assistance, and

Research for people living with HIV/AIDS, including education and outreach to keep our community adherent to HIV medications, aware of prescribed preventions like PrEP, the practice of safer sex, HIV testing and linkage to care. Our goal is a community free of HIV, which can only be attained by remembering and reflecting…and renewing the vow to find a vaccine…a cure.

II. Accessible Healthcare of Monroe County: This is achieved via our current collaborative clinical partnerships but we’ve broadened this to include Resource Identification. Any resident of Monroe County can speak with an Agency Medical Case Manager about various eligibilities and requirements. We can steer you toward who offers what.

III. Affordable Housing of Monroe County: This means Housing/Consumer Services for all. All of our properties consist of people living with HIV/AIDS, Homeless Veterans, Elderly, Low-Income Households, as well as people living with assorted disabilities.

Health and Housing. It’s what we do.

Space considerations no longer make it feasible to list every person, organization, business or collaborative partner, but we take nothing or none for granted. We bow to those venues and vendors who loan us their space and underwrite expenses; the Keys restaurants and beverage distributors who comprise our annual ‘Vintners Dinner’ and ‘Taste of Key West’ undertakings; every photographer and videographer; and Meals on Wheels MCC’s Cooking with Love providing our clients’ nourishment. We are so fortunate to maintain a stellar roster of compassionate, caring Board Members, past and present, who donate valuable time every month to pore over agendas, consider proposals and sharpen budgets and who offer tremendous oversight. We are especially proud to recognize Kings, Queens, Dukes, Duchesses, Prince and Princess from the 1989 – 2018 King and Queen of FANTASY FEST competitions (pictured on the back cover). They and their campaign teams surrender their everyday lives to work for 8 weeks to raise money while also acting as roving ambassadors for the Agency and our Mission. Special call-outs go to the Royal Purveyors and The Knights of Fantasy Fest.

Fundraising/Volunteering

The Key West Mile Markers team…warriors and heroes who make the annual, life-changing journey from Miami to Key West. The team, consistently ranked #1, ultimately raised an astounding $171,454. (As you can see from our cover, they raised a mind-blowing $278,954 over a 2-year period.) Their enthusiasm and energy, led by co-captains Karen Frank-Noll and Donald Gene Dotzauer, is simply unstoppable. Look for them at ‘Taste of Key West 2019’ on Monday, April 15th, at Mallory Square, near the AH booth.

Washington D.C. mixologist Jo McDaniel won the Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic, believed to be North America’s largest annual LGBT bartender competition, at the 2018 Key West PRIDE…and designated AH as the winner of the $5000 prize.

2018 Annual Report A.H. of Monroe County, Inc. Page 5

The SMART Ride has raised close to $10.5 million

since its inception in 2003. What makes them unique

is their guarantee that 100% of every dollar received

in the fundraising component will go to AIDS Service

Organizations (ASOs) throughout Florida that provide

direct services to those infected with or affected by HIV/

AIDS.

Reigning 2018 Fantasy Fest Queen Bernadette Restivo and King Larry Blackburn, along with their Royal Court of Duchess Jennifer Hughes, Duke Mike Syring and Duke Diamond Dave, raised $275,576 to support the 3-tiered Mission of AH: care, treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS: Accessible Healthcare; and Affordable Housing.

It’s not a Christmas Parade in Key West without our

past and present Royal Legacy, also known as ROQK

(Royal Order of Queens and Kings). Some of the cheery

participants, pictured here, from L to R: The Bitch

Sisters, Jodyrae Campbell, Mark Watson, Christopher

Elwell, Bernadette Restivo, Larry Blackburn, ‘Saint’ Paul

Murphy, Christopher Rounds, Jane Carper, Kate Miano,

our Agency’s 2018 ‘Unsung Hero’, awarded by the

Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK).

Pictured: Ron Burd, CFFK Board Chair, Destiny and

Dianna Sutton, CFFK President & CEO. This Kentucky

native is singing her way through life…from social

services agencies to homegrown, pop-up causes…

her musical fundraisers harmonize with local need…

and when a post-Irma campaign seemed hopeless, she

harmonized with her fellow Royal Candidates to insist

the show go on.
