One of my favourite poets is Robert Frost. He wrote
some incredible poetry. In one of my favourites he
writes about standing at a divergence of two paths and
choosing to take, ‘the one less travelled by’. He muses
how he was sorry he could not take both paths.
Experience had taught him that by choosing one he was,
in truth, never going to know where the other would have taken him. As I
write this letter the discussions are raging over whether Scotland should break
from the United Kingdom. By the time you read this – you will know.
In the churches there have been a lot of discussions about how we should
organise the ministry in the churches and chapels in the County. There are
two paths ahead it seems.
In one we struggle on with less and less clergy as 40% of the clergy retire and
cannot be replaced or frankly afforded. The result might be that like a
business the churches and chapels would concentrate on the big churches and
chapels in the towns and people would have to travel. In the other we share
the tasks once done by the clergy and do more and more of the informal
caring of each other that we have always done. This way we keep the church
and chapels local. It will mean that church services will be taken by a wider
variety of people but this way there will still be a person in each village who
people can go to. The network of Christian caring in our communities would
continue.
In our area because it is so sparsely populated the churches have been run by
teams for a very long time. Churchwardens, retired clergy, Readers, Local
Preachers, Chapel Stewards, the folk who clean the churches and chapels...the
list goes on. Together as a team we have looked after our local buildings and
tried to be there when folk needed us.
Sometimes there are two stark choices. At other times things in God’s
providence things evolve. I think that God has been preparing us for a long
time to take more responsibility locally for our churches and chapels. I know
there are some fantastic people already doing a great deal. However it cannot
be left to just a few. We need more people to share this very important work.
If you feel that you could give a few hours to the community – please ring me
on 015396 24045. It could be practical – to do with buildings or grounds, it
could be more to do with the spiritual life of the area - but we need everyone
to join in to make this path the one that carries on the rich Christian heritage
in this area. Do not think, ‘somebody else will do it’ – it is for all of us to get
involved if this is going to work.

The Herald 100 years ago, August/September/October 1914
Fine and warm till late September.
Much holiday traffic delayed 1 hour at Shap, Friday 31st July, after a derailment of Shap
Granite workman’s carriages at Shap station, 6.30pm, while being shunted. Both lines
blocked.
At start of August, Shap CC was top of the table, played 10 matches, won 7, drawn 2, lost 1.
Mr. Richard Winster has been 21 years the local Relieving Officer.
Shap Show was abandoned due to the War, (So was Penrith’s, but not Crosby Ravensworth’s
or Brough’s.
In Shap Workhouse, early September, tramps through 86 (up 25 on Sept. 1913). Mr. Todd the
Master, rabbit-trap caught a hen from Green Farm, whose Mr. Hudson wants its value back,
2/- (2014, £8). The Chairman: Have you been poaching Master? (Laughter). The Master:
Certainly not. It was moved by an inmate. I set it for rats. (Sent to Committee).
Shap UDC heard that water is short at south end of town due to unofficial connections being
made by householders. It was also noted the overgrown state of the path along the road from
Church Street to the Crosby Ravensworth been tended by its householders.
Married: at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Mitchell, S. Dakota, 2nd September, Joseph Wilson,
2nd son of Joseph Fothergill, Swaith Beck, Pooley, to M. E. Kindlysides, late of Shap; at 15,
East Mayfield, Edinburgh, 9th September, Frederick William Thurmott, M.P.S.P.H.C.
(i.e.Chemist), to Agnes, youngest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Holkett, late of Shap.
To let: The Nook, Hardendale, house and 35 acres (grazing).
Tramps through Shap Workhouse, late September, 59 (up 4 on 1913); in the house, 15.
Died in Orton, Jane, widow of Mr. John Harper, 28th August, aged 83; has 2 sons (in Glasgow
and Wethersby) and 1 daughter (the wife of Mr. G. B. Bayliffe, Shap.
October, fine, dry, cooler till 20th, then mixed; no frosts yet.
Nine men from Shap have joined the Army, as have three from Wet Sleddale.
On Friday 11th September, Annie, wife of Robert Smith, the shepherd in Mosedale, was
feeding the hens in the yard when she slipped and broke her right ankle. Dr. Nicholson (Shap)
came that night, riding the rough fell track (7 miles). Early on Friday 25th September she had a
pain in the head, she died at 5am. Inquest Monday 28th the Coroner walking the 7 miles from
and to Shap; foreman, R. Winster; 2 Douthwaites of Wet Sleddale on the jury. She was 49.
‘Heart failure and delayed shock’, said Dr. Nicholson was the cause of her death. Her son
(adult), Robert junior, identified her corpse. The Tailbert shepherd Tom Routledge’s wife was
her live-in nurse, since 11th September.
Harvest Festivals – Shap Church, Thursday evening 8th, Swindale Friday evening 9th, Shap
Wesleyan in Church, Sunday 4th.
Mrs Grayland, strung along by LNWR, applied for Court Order for 8/- a week from the £75
the Company still owes her for compensation for her husband’s death on the railway, his job.
It’s paid her only £50 so far. Her son gives her 12/- a week her only income. She can’t take
lodgers. - Granted. (8/- = £32 now).
The RDC is to press London to speed up consent for its Mardale Water Scheme.
The Workhouse Guardians (=management) rejected the Master’s expenses, but agreed to give
the Matron her first holiday for three years, as she plainly needs it.
Mr. J. E. Hindson (Keld) is now tenant of New Inn Farm; his successor at Keld is Mr. J.
Thwaites (Ullsmoor).
The UDC has now rid Low Beck Well of fly-tipping, and repaired its overflow.
Died at Church Terrace, Shap, 10th, John Nicholson, 69.

HISTORY IN HOUSES by Jean Scott-Smith
No 66 – Mere Syke
This rather grand house at the north end of
the village has quite an interesting history. It
takes its name from the watercourse that
flowed nearby. The River Leith runs from
beyond the church through the north of the
village and fed the troughs in the Low Well
(see article on the Hermitage), it is now
mostly underground. The road from the
junction with the A6 down to the end of the
back lane on the Bampton road is known as
Pow Lane ‘pow’ being a word for a slow
running stream.
The house was built by George Nicholson and completed in 1867. Mr Nicolson
had formerly lived at Prospect House, working on the roads and his wife Sarah
brought in extra money sewing shirts for navvies (building the railway). She died
in 1865 aged 65. George Nicholson then proposed a marriage with Miss Jane
Parker, one of the four daughters from the Cross Farm who was more about forty
years his junior; she agreed to marry him if he could provide her with a house fit
for her requirements; so a small gentleman’s residence was commissioned, the
stone mason was Robert Sarginson and the original building was L-shaped with
some gothic influence in the arched entrance porch and dressing room window
above. Water was obtained from a well beneath the house. The couple married in
1868, and went on to have three children before George died in 1874.
Once mains water came to the village, the house acquired its present square shape,
the enlargement included a scullery with a bathroom and small room with an oriel
window above it. In her later years Mrs Nicholson spent many hours at this
window watching tennis parties on the court behind
Ivy Cottage. The eldest son travelled in the Far East
and only came for occasional holidays, so in the 1920s
the house was let, latterly to surveyors for the
Haweswater dam. It then stood empty for some time
before Mr and Mrs Jack Millray negotiated to purchase
the property in 1932, and they remained there for 45
years.
I have been unable to verify the next owners before it
was purchased by Peter and Sonia Allen. Today,
Sonia and Gary Wall enjoy this lovely house which
has become a tranquil haven for those seeking Yoga
therapy and a base for Sonia’s reflexology business.

BRACKENBER LANE The Parish Council has had the verges on Brackenber Lane cut in an effort to make it look tidier, however they would request that the grass verges are not utilised for parking of vehicles to avoid damage.
DOG FOULING There has been an increase in reports of dog fouling. May we remind dog owners that all dog faeces should be picked up and deposited in a BIN or taken home for disposal, not thrown into the verge or hedge. The presence of dog faeces poses a threat to children and farm animals, and is extremely unpleasant for everyone. PLEASE BE A RESPONSIBLE AND CONSIDERATE DOG OWNER
