designProject - KAIA Airport

The new King Abdulaziz Int. Airport in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) will be

one of the largest airports in the world. It is the main airport in Saudi

Arabia and the gateway to Mekkah and Medina. The design by Atkins

Architects is symbolic with three terminals which portray the symbol

of a crescent moon associated with Saudi culture.

In areas like Jeddah, being a seaport town (salt corrosion) with high

sun intensity (UV stability of color) it is very important to choose the

coating quality. Often underestimated, the paint type is the prime

factor for long term panel durability and color aesthetics.

Sustainability was an important element of the project design.

The project owner wanted to achieve the prestigious LEED Silver

certification. Therefore aluminum was chosen as the material for the

roof and facade cladding. Euramax was able to create a brilliant copper

finish which met both the aesthetical and technical demands of this

prestigious building project.

Different panel and profile manufacturers use different suppliers of

painted aluminum. Working with Euramax as single supply coil coater

implies painting of different panels is done with only one paint and

on one paint line leading to optimal color and surface consistency.

Airport environments are typically high impact areas. This is the reason

that we recommend highly durable coating build-ups from our portfolio.

Although, in some situations, lower cost options might be available, we

recommend the use of multi-layer EuraFlon and PVDF paints in combination

with our ultra-strong Protec primer. Even after damage to the top paint layers

Protec will offer maximum corrosion resistance. All recommended coatings

are coil coated according to NEN-EN 1396:2015 and contain no Substances of

Very High Concern (SVHC).
