Chaplain's Corner Sherman Bruce, Post 160 Chaplain

The Roman Soldiers had at least two opportunities to kill the Son of God, Jesus Christ – they were successful on the last attempt on the Cross at Calvary. Christ defeated death there and because of that we need have no fear of our own death. The soldiers had no way of knowing that their scripts in these assassination attempts were written for them hundreds of years ago. The first opportunity was ordered by King Herod (or Herod the Great, as he liked to be called) when Christ was a new born baby in Bethlehem. The Book of Matthew Chapter Two, tells us that Herod was troubled when the Wise Men from the East came seeking the new born "King of the Jews." In 40 B.C. the Roman Senate named Herod “King of the Jews,” this after Herod had been the Roman Governor of Galilee, the birth country of Christ, for seven years. As we learned above, Herod was also greatly troubled to think that he could be replaced as King of the Jews. The King was told by his Jewish chief priests and scribes (all of them well read in the Old Testament) that yes, a Messiah is to be born in Bethlehem – Book of Micah 5: 1-5, written 700 years before the birth of Christ. Herod sends the Wise Men with their gifts to Bethlehem; with the request to return and let him know where the Messiah is so he also may go and worship Him. Like so many today, all Herod wanted to do was erase (kill) any memory of Jesus Christ forever. The Wise Men, after presenting gifts and worshiping the new born Christ, are told in a dream not to return to Herod’s Palace. Now we come to the first attempt on the life of Jesus – Herod, so outraged with the Wise Men, sent his sol-diers to Bethlehem with orders to kill all male children under the age of two years. Joseph was made aware in a dream that Herod wished the baby Jesus killed, so he took Mary and the newly born Jesus from Bethlehem into Egypt. Let’s pause here and look at the "players" that we see above. First, the chief priests, they knew from their study of the Old Testament that a Savior was to be born in Bethlehem -- they told the King that much. The priests represent the religiously indifferent. They know the truth but chose to do nothing about it – ignoring the power of believing in Jesus Christ and the fact He died for us. Bethlehem was only six miles from Jerusalem but even that was too far to go. If this baby was the promised Messiah they were out of a job! They did not know it but they already had their god(s); their power that the position gave to them, their robes and other trappings. This they would all lose if the baby was indeed the "King of Jews." Herod represents the hostility found in the world to any-thing referring to Jesus, whether it be the cross being displayed or the mention of the name Jesus Christ. They oppose spiritual truth and wish to wipe away every trace of this great land’s Christian heritage. The Wise Men prove themselves worthy of their name. When they found Him, they worshiped and honored Him. After 2,000 years Herod has many blood relatives alive and well, the priests and scribes are still too busy with the own gods to go to Bethlehem – Wise Men still seek Him.

World War II Vet, Al Rowe, Gets His Medals - 72 Years Later At the annual Veterans Ball, held at American Legion Post 160 in Smyrna, on November 11, 2016, Al Rowe, a Legionnaire and World War II Veteran, was awarded five medals for his military service. Al served in the Pacific from 1941-1945. After he left the service, he was unaware of the medals he was entitled to. At that time, the men and women just wanted to get back home.

After a review of his records, Al was to be awarded the US Army Good Conduct Medal, the Service in China Medal, the Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Defense Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Al was awarded his medals by Mark Munoz, Staff Sergeant, US Marine Corps Retired. Al will turn 97 in January 2017.

US Army Good Conduct Medal

Service in China Medal

Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal

American Defense Medal

World War II Victory Medal

Al enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 at Ft. Bragg, NC. Back then there were 12 million men in the service. There were so many people in the service it was not "special" just expected. A native of Durham NC, he went to training at Ft. Bragg NC and then on to Jackson MS. He stayed in Jackson for 2 months and it rained most of the time. Then he was shipped through the Panama Canal to Aubrook Field and later to Howard Field, which has been carved out of the jungle 500 yards from the Pacific Ocean. The only five-star general in Air-Force history, Henry H. "Hap" Arnold played a prominent role in the history of Howard AFB and military aviation in Panama. On December 1, 1939, the new air base officially became Howard Field, named after Maj. Charles H. Howard who had been part of his crew of the famed B-10 bombers to Alaska in 1934. Maj. How-ard died in a plane crash on October 25, 1936. Construction began shortly thereafter and the first troops arrived on May 15, 1941. Howard Field hosted both fighter and bomber aircraft during the World War II era.

After his tour in the Pacific (Panama), Al came back to the US in 1944 and was assigned to 14th Air Force in the Carib-bean - Miami Beach FL at the Convalescent Hospital for all the POWs of the Air Force. He was in charge of leased ho-tels, mess halls, and other facilities that were part of this "Recreation Place". Some men had lost limbs and were in the Convalescent Hospital. They got their medical records up to date, gave them pay, and new clothes. They would take them to the beach for a week. Buses would carry them to town. They would take them deep sea fishing. This was one the original places for R & R (Rest & Recuperation). Al was discharged in November 1945 and returned home to Durham NC. His father and uncle had a bakery there but they had to sell the business because they could not get help or ingredients (sugar). Al joined Colonial Stores, a chain of grocery stores throughout the South which later became part of Big Star and Harris Teeter. Al stayed with them for 20 years and retired as a VP in 1982. He then started a consulting business until 1991 when he "really" retired at age 72. In November 3, 2014, at the age of 94, Lockheed Martin Leadership Association (LMLA) honored Al Rowe with a din-ner at Renaissance Waverly Hotel. On May 27, 2015, Al and his grandson took the "Honor Flight" to Washington D.C. The "Honor Flight" thanks veterans for all their sacrifices by flying these American heroes to Washington, DC to visit and reflect at their memorials. The WW II Memori-al was not dedicated until April 2004, nearly sixty years after the end of the war, therefore, there are MANY veterans who have not had the opportunity or the resources to see their country’s tribute to their bravery.

SAL "Toys for Tots" Will Collect Toys Until 12/13/16 Sons of the American Legion Squadron 160 will be placing their two (2) Donation Boxes at Post 160 during the Holiday season One will be in the Lounge and one in the Ballroom. They need new, unwrapped toys for all age groups. They will be placing nine (9) other boxes around town to receive donations

They are looking for new toys, board games, books, dolls, balls, blocks, costumes, crayons, etc. They cannot accept any toy weapons: guns, arrows, projec-tiles. The Challenge: When you donate toys to needy children you provide self-esteem and a glimmer of hope. Without sufficient toys and books, children don't develop necessary motor skills. Play is essen-tial for children to lead happy, healthy, and produc-tive lives. When a neglected child receives a game or toy donation, he/she can develop necessary social skills, such as sharing. Children in low income families have little inspira-tion for the imaginative, fulfilled life that all children deserve. When you donate a toy to a needy child, you provide a positive outlet for the child's energy and creativity.

The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in be-coming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.

Troop 250 - First Eagle Scout Ethan James Burton of Roswell , a founding member of Troop 250, chartered by American Legion Post 160, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout November 15, 2016 at his Board of Review held by representatives of the At-lanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Ethan is the son of Karen Twer and Keith Burton and the brother of Colin, also a member of Troop 250, and Miles, a future scout. Ethan is a member of the Order of the Arrow, scouting’s honor society recognizing Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. To earn the rank of Eagle, a Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges and demonstrate leadership and communi-ty service by organizing and carrying out an Eagle pro-ject. For his project, Ethan completed restoration and terrac-ing of hill that leads from the Post 160 parking lot to the Smyrna baseball fields. These steep slopes on ei-ther side of the stairs have always been difficult to landscape and maintain. Ethan led scouts, leaders, and other volunteers to complete 63 hours of service work to plan and complete the project by installing terraces of eight to twenty-four feet on both sides of the stairs to reduce erosion and prepare better beds for future plant-ings. Ethan is the first scout to attain the rank of Eagle with Troop 250. He will formally receive his Eagle recogni-tion at the Troop 250 Court of Honor being held at Lake Laurel Clubhouse on December 18th. Ethan finished his high school career at Pope High School in the spring and will be applying to schools where he can build on his passion for writing and per-forming music.

Other Troop 250 Happenings: Adventurous scouts and leaders went white water rafting September 10th – 11th. The expedition included 8.5 miles of rocking and rolling down the Nantahala River. According to Scoutmaster Tony, “the 53 degree water does not feel as cold the second time you go in!” Sorry, no photos of the rafting as the troop does not have a waterproof camera! Pictured are a few of the scouts at the campsite cleaning up after a great campfire meal. In October, the troop attended Maker Faire in Decatur. This is a gather-ing of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love shar-ing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters, Maker Faire is a venue to for these “makers” to show hobbies, experi-ments, projects. The boys went specifically for the Drone Racing. The weekend of November 5th and 6th, scouts and leaders went back-packing in the North GA mountains to complete some requirements for the Camping, Cooking, and Hiking merit badg-es. They call this a shakedown hike for future backing trips. A number of scouts also completed some outdoor and skills requirements to help them move forward on their path to Eagle. During this trip, the boys descended almost 2,000 feet from the peak of Brasstown Bald on a four mile trail. They practiced trail cooking with various mini-stoves and heating elements and determined that when tired, freeze-dried food is really worth it – there is not much to clean up (see picture from the September trip!). The boys were able to meet with the forest fire fighters from California who were brought in to spot and fight the fires that had started the month before.

There are several ways to renew your membership dues: 1) Stopping by the Post and paying by either cash, check or credit card; 2) mailing in your dues to Smyrna Post 160 – 160 Legion Drive – Smyrna, GA 30080; 3) going online to legion.org and select RE-NEW and pay by credit card (secure). If you are unsure if you have paid yet, you can verify this by looking at your membership card. If you have paid for this current legion year you should have a membership card that shows 2017 at the top of the card.
