1999

In 1999, a Duke undergraduate, frustrated by the alcohol culture on campus, developed a plan to tackle high-risk drinking at America’s colleges and universities. His goal was to find an approach that empowered students to address the problem.

What was one undergraduate’s idea…

For nearly a decade, Outside The Classroom has been steadfast in its endeavor to strengthen the field of alcohol prevention through our thought leadership, innovative and evidence-based programs, and deep expertise. As the organization and its impact on higher education has expanded over time, we have remained wholly committed to a single promise—empowering our partner institutions to achieve their mission of promoting student success.

2000 2001 2002 20031

… has redefined alcohol prevention on America’s college campuses.

Brandon Busteed, Duke student leader and University trustee, inspires early backers with his passion and commitment and secures financing to launch a for-profit social enterprise.

Curriculum SummitBusteed convenes 20+ experts to build the nation’s first online alcohol prevention course: AlcoholEdu for College.

Pioneering Population-Level Prevention® Following the lead of Villanova University, institutions begin requiring AlcoholEdu of all incoming first-year students.

Thought LeadershipBusteed helps boards and presidents address alcohol prevention and risk liability via published articles on policy recommendations. Busteed’s articles have appeared in journals such as Trusteeship and The Chronicle of Higher Education.

NASPA-RecommendedBased upon strong supporting data, NASPA announces that Population-Level Prevention “effectively moderates high-risk drinking” and recommends this strategy through use of AlcoholEdu for College.

The Push for Primary PreventionAlcoholEdu for College becomes widely used as a primary prevention program. AlcoholEdu® for Sanctions is created as an intervention tool for students who violate alcohol policies.

Dr. Andrew F. Wall, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign In 2005, Dr. Wall conducted an independent study of 20,150 first-year students from 225 participating institutions (NASPA Journal, 2008), which found that first-year students who completed the online prevention alcohol program, AlcoholEdu: n engaged in heavy drinking less frequently n suffered fewer negative alcohol-related consequences n had less positive expectations of drinking than do students who have

not completed the program

Villanova University, Randomized Control TrialIn fall 2007, an independent researcher conducted a randomized control trial at Villanova University and found that compared to the control group, first-year students who completed AlcoholEdu: n reported a greater reduction in alcohol use in one sitting n were less likely to expect positive outcomes from drinking n were less likely to make poor decisions as a result of alcohol use n were less accepting of negative alcohol use behaviors of others

Each new version of AlcoholEdu incorporates the latest evidence-based prevention methods to create a highly personalized user experience that inspires students to reflect on and consider changing their drinking. We strive to empower students by providing them with the tools and resources to be successful, and this ongoing commitment has allowed AlcoholEdu to remain the leading program of its kind.

2002 Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Curve exercise provides students with a tool to examine their drinking.2003 Course is personalized for each student, with pathways based on students’ drinking patterns and sex. Online portal offers students a central site for key course information (My AlcoholEdu).2004 Prevention Practice Management team helps institutions develop/sustain a comprehensive prevention plan that

includes the most effective use of AlcoholEdu and its data.2005 Additional course pathways incorporate students’ readiness to change. Case-based learning strategy helps students develop skills that can be applied in their own lives. Online Brief Motivational Intervention (BMI) tool, Alcohol Innerview™, is developed as a tertiary intervention tool.2006 New administrative site (The Hub) facilitates AlcoholEdu implementation process.2007 Personalized planning tool helps both drinkers and non-drinkers develop protective strategies. Expectancy challenge innovations help decrease students’ positive expectancies about alcohol. Online reporting system provides national benchmarking capabilities. 2008 Unprecedented degree of personalization adds highly targeted messages for committed non-drinkers, situational

non-drinkers, light/moderate drinkers, problematic drinkers, etc. Shorter, more entertaining course uses a story narrative and features that reflect the way millennials communicate

(blogs, IM chats, videos, etc.).

Media AttentionThe Wall Street Journal notes that “120 colleges and universities now require first-year students to complete AlcoholEdu.” In fact, AlcoholEdu partners are mentioned in the press hundreds of times each year for their prevention efforts related to the program.

Broadening our Approach In response to feedback from our partners, AlcoholEdu® for Parents and SexualAssaultEdu™ are introduced.

36% of all first-year students at America’s four-year higher education institutions will engage with AlcoholEdu in 2008-2009. By the end of that academic year, nearly 2 million students will have completed the program.

Research MethodologyTo assess AlcoholEdu’s effectiveness, an independent researcher conducted a randomized control trial at Villanova University in the fall of 2007, with full-time, first-year students randomly assigned to either an AlcoholEdu or control group. Across the two experimental groups, students electing to participate in the study had similar demographic and drinking profiles. The data analysis compared the results of pre- and post-intervention behavioral surveys, using self-reported student data.

Summary of Findings

ConclusionVillanova students who completed AlcoholEdu reported a greater reduction in alcohol use per drinking event compared to the control group. AlcoholEdu students were also less likely to expect positive outcomes from drinking, less likely to make poor decisions as a result of alcohol use, and less accepting of negative alcohol use behaviors of others. It is important to note that Villanova has implemented a comprehensive prevention program that consistently addresses issues of alcohol abuse on campus; AlcoholEdu is just one piece of this prevention strategy.

Change in Acceptance of Others’ Alcohol Use Behavior

Students in the AlcoholEdu group reported that they were less accepting of others’ negative alcohol use behavior, while the control group reported that they were more accepting.

Decrease in Reported Number of Drinks Consumed Per Drinking Event

Students in the AlcoholEdu group reported greater reductions in alcohol use per drinking event than students in the control group.

Why Is AlcoholEdu the Leading National Alcohol Prevention Program?

AlcoholEdu for College provides five primary benefits that cannot be matched by alternatives currently available in the market.

5. Analyst on the telephone

#1 Superior Program DesignAlcoholEdu is the only program designed for primary prevention for college-age students. Its unique design and delivery allow you to meet all first-year students where they are today, helping them make safer decisions about alcohol in the future.

■ Why does this matter? Research shows that the most effective prevention programs are not “one size fits all.”■ Alternative programs are designed mainly for high-risk drinkers and do not take into account the specific needs of

non-drinkers or light/moderate drinkers. AlcoholEdu provides resources and tools that meet individual students where they are based on their personal drinking choices.

#2 Only Program With Population-Level EfficacyAlcoholEdu is the only program with demonstrated efficacy when administered at a population level.

■ A study published in the January 2008 NASPA Journal suggests that first-year students who complete AlcoholEdu engage in heavy drinking less frequently, suffer fewer alcohol-related consequences, and have less positive expectations of drinking than do students who have not taken the program.

#3 Unrivaled Outcomes Data and Comparative ReportsAlcoholEdu is the only program that provides evaluative outcomes data and comparisons between your institution and those you benchmark against.

■ Matched-participant analysis across three surveys provides you with the ability to measure the impact of the course and your prevention programs and policies on student behavior over time.

■ With more than 500,000 college students taking AlcoholEdu each academic year, our annual data set represents more than 35% of the nation’s first-year students at four-year institutions.

■ Our rich data set allows for comparison of your institution’s results not only to the national aggregate but also to a set of six peer/aspiration institutions of your choice and to institutions within your Carnegie Classification.

#4 Exclusively Recommended by Leading Liability Insurer United Educators, the leading risk liability insurance provider, recommends AlcoholEdu as a strategy for reducing institutional risk stemming from high-risk drinking.

■ United Educators studies a wide range of risks facing its 1,100+ members, providing advice on risk reduction; its recommendation of AlcoholEdu is based on the program’s impact in reducing alcohol-related claims.

5. Analyst on the telephone

#5 Unparalleled Expertise and Consultative Support AlcoholEdu is the only program that includes complimentary consultative support from a nationally recognized staff of experts in the field of alcohol prevention.

■ Thought leaders and veteran practitioners are available to provide consultation on topics ranging from the most effective implementation practices to the most beneficial use of the extensive data available through AlcoholEdu.

■ Many of our AlcoholEdu partners rely on our staff of experts for guidance and collaboration in shaping their alcohol prevention strategies and policies.

An Educational Approach to Alcohol

In the past two years, Reams and Iowa compared students who had taken AlcoholEdu to those who had not and found an array of positive results: A reduction in hangovers, reduction in blackouts, an increase in the number of students who abstain from use even after being in our environment during the college effect period, continued compliance of 98 percent by the deadlines and all freshman students completing the course by registration.

What Our Partners Say About the Impact On Campus...

“ Statistics gathered through AlcoholEdu indicate these behavior changes at UTSA as a result of the program: n The percentage of drinkers who developed an

awareness of the need to change the way they drink increased from 19 to 31 percent from Survey 1 to Survey 2.

n In the third year of the UTSA program, there was a 47 percent decline in alcohol-related incidents as compared to the first year of the program.”

Annual Police Report Shows Strong Enforcement of Alcohol LawsRalph Castro. . . said the annual number of trips to the ER is perhaps the best indicator of how badly alcohol is being abused on campus and how much progress education and outreach efforts have made. For the 2004-05 year, Castro said there were 119 trips, followed by 93 trips the next year, 54 for all of 2006-07, and 37 last year. . . Castro credited the success to several programs that were introduced over the last four years, including the adoption of AlcoholEdu.In reference to Ralph Castro, Director of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Programs, Stanford UniversityAlcoholEdu partner since 2004

THE STANFORD REPORT

September 30, 2008

July 24, 2008“ This is the premier alcohol education program available in the United States at the moment. It is recognized by many other institutions as the most effective, and it is respected by our colleagues. This type of program helps give students a better idea as to what is real and should change their expectations, and therefore change their behavior.”
