AFIL facilitatesresearch and innovation in the manufacturing sectorpromoting best practices and enablingtechnologies in order to support and developLombardy production system leadership andcompetitiveness.
MISSIONTo set up a STABLE COMMUNITY by
connecting companies, Universities, Research Institutions and Associations,
thus favouring COOPERATION by promoting RESEARCH AND
INNOVATION projects and initiatives.
To be a REFERENCE counterpart for the REGION for the definition of RESEARCH and INNOVATION
strategies in the MANUFACTURINGsector.
To support the development of a Research and Innovation
INTERREGIONAL NETWORK throughthe participaton to
CFI – INTELLIGENT FACTORY NATIONAL CLUSTER and the
connection with different EUROPEAN REGIONS within the SMART
SPECIALIZATION strategy.

THE VANGUARD STORY
Vanguard is a network between the 28 most advanced EuropeanRegions, focused on best practices and project sharing within the advanced manufacturing industry;
AFIL is the subject appointed to represent the interest of LombardyRegion as technical referent;
The attendance to Vanguard allowed AFIL to involve its members on priority issues in the following European Advanced Manufacturing environments:
:: Efficient and Sustainable Manufactoring
:: 3D Printing
:: High Performance Manufactoring for Oil & Gas application
The initiative stimulated the creation and development of workgroups(Period 2014/2016):
:: More than 70 AFIL members and 60 not members involved
:: More than 400 recorded attendances to workgroups meetings
:: 30 meetings
:: 6 Pilot Plants Ideas submitted to Vaguard initiative
THE VANGUARD STORY
De and Remanufacturing (ESM)
Leading project within AFIL coordinated ESM Pilot Plants initiative
Technologies for dismantling and reusing components and materials, with the purpose of minimizing or eliminate environmental impact connected to the disposal of products at the end of their life cycle.
Investments plan developed for a pilot plants network: 30 mln. €, with a 5 years payback.
6 Democases developed::: Composite Recovery from Wind Energy System:: Heavy machinery components remanufacturing:: Automotive parts remanufacturing:: High-value TLC systems and Electronics Recovery:: Metal components reprocessing:: Remanufacturing of electrical motors
6 European Regions and 50 enterprises involved.
Private entities already declared investment intentions in the project of about 12 mln. €.
THE ERICA STORY
Erica is one of the two winning projects of the TREC (Toward EU Regional Economic Convergence) Competition.
The winning proposal includes partecipation of 1 research center and 1 cluster for each of the 4 European Regions involved: Lombardy, Catalonia, Nord-Pas de Calais, South Netherland.
Lombardy will take part with ITIA-CNR as Research center and AFIL as technological Cluster
The aim of the project is the development of methods and supportprocesses aimed to the creation and reinforcement of new industrial value chains in Europe.
AFIL allegiance was a consequence to the active participation to the Vanguard Initiative network.
