All Saints’ Sunday

Welcome

This Sunday we observe the feast of All Saints’ Day. While many congregations use this service to remember those saints who have departed this life in faith, we do well to remember that “saint” is simply another word for “believer” or “follower of Jesus.” All of those who gather to confess Jesus as Lord are indeed already saints. The Gospel for today is a section of the Sermon on the Mount known as the Beatitudes. Jesus begins this sermon by recounting the present reality of those who have faith: they are blessed. Even when it looks as though the faithful are the opposite of blessed, they are indeed blessed because theirs is the kingdom of heaven. They are a part of the reign and rule of God. All saints, including you, are a part of the reign and rule of God; therefore, you are blessed.

Holy Communion

We believe that Christ’s body and blood are truly present in Holy Communion, and that we receive the forgiveness of sins along with the bread and wine in this Holy Meal. As a “Family Church,” we invite those who share this understanding, and who desire God’s forgiveness and strength, to join with us in receiving Holy Communion. (Gluten free wafers are available.) If you have any questions, please speak to our pastor at any time. All worshippers are asked to fill out the “Fellowship Pad” in the pew and pass it down. After all have signed, please leave the pad at the end of the pew to be picked up after worship. Please stand where indicated with a . Thank you!

CONFESSION and FORGIVENESS

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our

sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [I John 1:8-9]

+ Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination +

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have

done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our

whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly

deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son,

Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that

we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy

name. Amen. P Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for you and for his sake

forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the T Son, and of the Holy Spirit. [John 20:19-23]

C Amen.

SALUTATION and PRAYER OF THE DAY

P The Lord be with you.

P Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, You knit together Your faithful people of all times and places into one holy communion, the mystical Body of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Grant us so to follow Your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that, together with them, we may come to the unspeakable joys You have prepared for those who love You; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE (9:00) Deacon Anthony Cavaliere

FIRST READING Revelation 7:9-17

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the

Lamb!” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

“Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

R This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE 1 John 3:1-3

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

R This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 5:1-12

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter.

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all

things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His

Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,

begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things

were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and

was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was

crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the

third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to

judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the

Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and

glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and

apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look

for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

REMEMBRANCE OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

The Rite of the Remembrance of the Faithful Departed is read at the Baptismal font. The Paschal candle is lit, symbolizing the light of Christ which unites

the faithful of every time and every place.

P In joyful expectation of the resurrection to life eternal, we remember before the

Lord our departed family and friends who have gone before us in faith.

We remember the sainted of our Trinity congregational family since All Saints' Sunday 2017 as each name is read. (see insert)

P Almighty God, we remember with thanksgiving those who loved and served You in Your Church on earth and who now rest from their labors. Keep us in

fellowship with all Your saints, and bring us at last to the joy of Your heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

TRINITY CHOIR (9:00) “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” – Brahms

How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord Of Hosts! For my soul, it longeth, yea, fainteth for the courts of the Lord; my soul and body crieth out, yea, for the living God. Blest are they that dwell within Thy house; they praise Thy name evermore.

SOUNDS OF PRAISE (10:45) “Saints of God” – Exner

Where I go I walk with a company: Saints of God, they are by my side. I was with Daniel, standing among the lions that he defied. When I look in the book, I am with David and crossing Kidron brook. Saul struck blind, Ruth so kind: stories of the great ones live in my mind. Where I go I walk with the mighty ones: Saints of God, everywhere I go, once, in a furnace, I stood with Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego. When it got fiery hot, burnt to a cinder we certainly were not! I looked on Jacob, strong, wrestling with the angel all night long. When everything goes all wrong with me, I sulk with Elijah by his juniper tree; but, when I’m tired of feeling stale, I sit with Paul and Silas singing in jail! Where I go I walk with the blessed ones: Saints of God, they are all around. I was with Moses, taking my shoes off, standing on holy ground. They’re all here, plain and clear; open the pages and watch as they appear: Saints of God, friends in God! I have run to meet them where they have trod; I will always walk with Saints of God!

PREFACE

P The Lord be with you.

P Lift up your hearts.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. In the communion of all Your saints gathered into the one Body of Your Son, You have surrounded us with so great a cloud of witnesses that we, encouraged by their faith and strengthened by their fellowship, may run with perseverance the race that is set before us and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD

PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST

P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will

be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive

us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

DISTRIBUTION HYMNS

“Shall We Gather At the River WOV 690

Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God?

Refrain: Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river; gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God.

On the margin of the river, washing up its silver spray, we will walk and worship ever, all the happy golden day. (Refrain)

Ere we reach the shining river, lay we ev'ry burden down; grace our spirits will deliver, and provide a robe and crown. (Refrain)

Soon we'll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease; soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace. (Refrain)
