Dear Families,

Our Sunday Visitor has a fantastic website, full of resources that can help you

experience our Faith. There is a weekly newsletter that contains articles on

many topics. Check it out at https://osv.com/OSVNewsweekly. Here is an

excerpt from a recent article:

Fall can sometimes be regarded as a transitional time of the year. Leaves

are changing. It’s not hot, but it’s not quite cold. The holidays are coming, but

they haven’t yet hit their stride. The Church, too, is in transition mode. The

last few weeks of Ordinary Time are wrapping up as parishes and the faithful

prepare for Advent. But before we get consumed with the holiday rush, we

have the opportunity to take a few moments and center ourselves within the

rhythm of the Church’s liturgical year at this quieter time. In the following

pages, you’ll find an assortment of information to help keep you focused on

ways you can grow in your faith this fall. Bible verses from upcoming read-

ings will help keep your mind on Scripture and prepare for what you will hear

at Mass. Quotations from the Holy Father will encourage and uplift. A calen-

dar with important dates will help you keep track of your schedule. Short bios

of saints will help you remember to celebrate their upcoming feast dates. In

the spirit of Thanksgiving, we offer five ways to express gratitude. And in the

spirit of staying healthy as school begins getting into full gear, we have five

healthy habits for your family.

Advent is right around the corner, and I encourage you all to be intentional

this year, as we prepare for the celebration of Jesus birth.

God’s blessing to your families,

Melissa

ST. ANTHONY’S NEWS & EVENTS

AROUND THE DIOCESE

Mass Intentions by

Fr. William Saunders What does it mean to have a Mass "offered" for someone? An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for ex-ample, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. One must

never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical "Mirae caritatis" (1902) beautifully elaborated this point and emphasized the connection be-tween the communion of saints with the

Mass: "The grace of mutual love among the living, strengthened and increased by the

sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, especially by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the communion of saints."

Please keep in mind that the tradition of offering Masses for others, particularly the dead, originates in the very early Church. Given this understanding, we can add some specifics. When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions: First, to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church. Second, to offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole Church. Third, to offer the Mass for a particular intention, such as the repose of the soul of someone who has died. The special personal fruits of the Mass benefit the celebrating priest who acts in the person of Christ in offering the Mass and to the people who are in attendance and par-ticipate in the offering of the Mass. These fruits are both extensively and intensively finite, since each of us is finite. Therefore, the more a Mass is offered, the more benefit is conferred. Finally, a person may ask a priest to offer a Mass for a particular intention; usually, a stipend is given to the priest for offering the Mass, which thereby in justice creates an obligation which must be satisfied.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up soon, please contact Helene

Wilson, our St. Vincent de Paul chairperson, if you know of a family that may

be in need of food and/or toys. Helene can be reached at 491-0438.

second session of our 2015-16 Faith & Healing Speaker Series. Dr. Warren

ham VA Medical Center and an assistant professor of theology at Duke Divin-

ity School; his talk might especially be of interest to any veterans who attend

your parish. Hors d'oeuvres will be served at 6 pm, followed by Dr. Kinghorn’s

talk, and then a time for Q&A. The talk is free and open to the public. So as to

best coordinate the food for the evening, we are asking that participants

please pre-register at the following link:

CONSIDER THIS

St. Paul pleads for “prayer partners”. Prayer is an important part of my

ministry. I need your help to sustain my ministry and make it more fruitful

in time and in Eternity. Can you offer for me some simple acts of prayer

and praise? Just 15 minutes per week can serve to transform my ministry

and anoint it. At the stoplight, waiting for an elevator, during commercials

on TV, walking to and from an appointment, the prayers you offer for me

and my ministry can give you a special role and service to the Lord and His

people. These common prayers can bring great gifts of healing to you and

all those I minister to. God bless you always—in all ways. I am forever

grateful.
