M I N U T E S The Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of the Alvord Unified School
District was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by President Johnson, in the Board
Room of the District Office.
A quorum was established with the following Board Members in attendance:
Present: Mr. Ben Johnson II, President
Mrs. Carolyn M. Wilson, Vice President
Mr. Art Kaspereen, Jr., Clerk
Mrs. Julie A. Moreno, Member
Mr. Robert Schwandt, Member
Hearing Session: President Johnson extended an invitation to the audience to
present matters of concern related to Closed Session items. No one came
forward.
The Board adjourned to Closed Session at 5:02 p.m. and reconvened to Open
Session at 7:06 p.m. in the Board Room of the District Office.
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America was
recited by those in attendance.
3. Approve Minutes: The Board approved the Minutes of the Regular
Board Meeting of October 1, 2015, upon a motion made by Carolyn
Wilson and seconded by Julie Moreno.
The vote was:
Ayes – 5 (Schwandt, Wilson, Johnson, Kaspereen, Moreno)
Noes – 0

Presentations: 4. After School Expanded Learning Program Presentation: Carmen Phillips,
Coordinator, After School Expanded Learning Program, gave a
presentation highlighting the many opportunities and successes children
have at 12 elementary school sites and four middle school sites, clarified
information and answered questions.
5. Alvord Continuation High School and Alvord Alternative Continuation
High School Program Presentation: Sandy Fielding, Principal, and Lisa
Pynn, Counselor, Alvord Continuation High School, and Jason Marquez,
Principal, and Shirley Marcotte, Counselor, Alvord Alternative
Continuation High School, presented an overview of the various
programs and activities offered at their respective schools.
13. Update on Anti-Bullying Oversight Committee: Carolyn M. Wilson,
Board Vice President and Committee Chair, provided a brief update on
Anti-Bullying activities during October’s National Bullying Prevention
Awareness Month. Dr. Sherri Kemp, Principal, Loma Vista Middle
School, highlighted activities and the Anti-Bullying video being
presented to Loma Vista students.
Hearing Session: President Johnson extended an invitation to the audience to
present matters of concern to the Board. The following individuals came
forward:
Carmen Phillips, Coordinator, After School Expanded Learning
Programs, extended an invitation to all and distributed a flyer
reflecting Lights On Afterschool activities scheduled for next week.
Paulette Perry, AVID Teacher, Villegas Middle School, thanked the
Board of Education and presented them with a huge thank you card
from AVID students for their support and stated that Principal Joshua
Moss received funds that will provide tutors and address the needs of
the program. Ms. Perry is delighted and appreciative that her
students’ needs will be met.
6. Action Items:
The following Consent Agenda items were presented for approval:
a. Accept Gifts:
1) Lifetouch National School Studios donated $333.05 to Valley View
Elementary School.
2) Target donated 13 boxes of school supplies valued at $2,000.00 to
Wells Middle School.
3) Schools First Federal Credit Union donated $500.00 to Child
Nutrition Services for the Professional Development luncheon.

Board/Superintendent Comments:
Robert Schwandt ~ Mr. Schwandt was impressed that the presentations given
tonight align with the student achievement goal listed at the top of the agenda.
Mr. Schwandt continues to be impressed by those individuals and companies
that donate to Alvord schools, stating that it is nice to see local businesses
supporting students. Mr. Schwandt thanked K.R. Zack Earp for his update on
Alvord Educational Foundation activities and events at the last Board Meeting,
such as the Bicycle Classic that was held on Sunday. Mr. Schwandt stated that
there were several high school students assisting with the event and they
represented Alvord very well. Mr. Schwandt announced that Team Alvord
participated in the Dollars for Scholars Golf Fundraising event and placed
second. Mr. Schwandt thanked Kevin Emenaker, Michael Kolonics and Brian
Gernertt for being a part of the team. Alvord was also well represented on
October 8th at the Long Night of Arts and Innovation.
Carolyn M. Wilson ~ Mrs. Wilson wished Angela Gallardo Hopkins a Happy
Birthday! Mrs. Wilson recognized Carl Koehler and stated that it is nice to see
him back at Hillcrest High School. Mrs. Wilson visited Promenade Elementary
School’s recent parent meeting and was impressed by Pamela Williams the new
principal. She did a phenomenal job engaging parents. Mrs. Wilson had the
pleasure of introducing Alpin Hong at Lake Hills Elementary School on Monday
and stated that he is truly making a difference in Alvord.

Julie A. Moreno ~ Mrs. Moreno commended Jason Marquez, Sandy Fielding
and Sherri Kemp for their presentations tonight and stated that it was nice to see
and hear them showcase their school sites. Mrs. Moreno thanked Carmen
Phillips for what she has been able to accomplish in the After Schools Program.
Mrs. Moreno extended an invitation for all to attend the Town Hall Meeting
scheduled for Tuesday, October 20th at La Sierra High School at 6:00 p.m.
Ben Johnson ~ Mr. Johnson thanked the principals and their staff for the
presentations tonight. Mr. Johnson met with Councilman John Burnard in Ward
7, who will also be holding a Town Hall Meeting on November 4th.

AUSD – Minutes – Meeting of October 15, 2015
Dr. Salazar ~ Dr. Salazar recognized the Principal Representatives for tonight,
Diane Kammeyer and Israel Avila. Dr. Salazar attended Orrenmaa’s College
Day event and was amazed to see the students participating in all the activities.
Alpin Hong will be meeting with Dr. Salazar soon, and Dr. Salazar will be
bringing a proposal to the Board for approval soon. This week Dr. Salazar
presented to AEA’s Executive Council and he thanked Leigh Hawkinson,
President, for allowing him to present. Dr. Salazar reminded everyone about the
Town Hall Meeting on October 20th at 6:00 p.m. at La Sierra High School and
stated that he will conduct a short presentation and there will be opportunities
for questions. Dr. Salazar stated that he has requested that all principals attend
the Town Hall Meeting and he is challenging them to bring 10-20 community
members with them. Dr. Salazar congratulated Ginger for being recognized as
the Administrator of the Year at the School Counseling Awards held on October
10th.
