DAY 1: TUESDAY, JULY 10th 2018 (Breakfast, lunch and appetizers provided)

Breakfast at your leisure in the hotel restaurant 8:15am: Meet in the lobby for tour briefing and introductions.

8:30am: Depart for Big Rock Brewery 9am: Tour of Big Rock Brewery in Calgary

A lot of passion goes into the beer we brew here at Big Rock. Our beer tells this tasty tale but we also would also like to have

the opportunity to show you. Touring one of our breweries (we have production facilities in Calgary, Vancouver, & Etobicoke)

gives you the opportunity to experience the careful crafting that happens behind the scenes and gives you insight into the pro-

cess from the top of a barley bin to the bottom of a pint glass.

Our tours run for 1.5 hours and are led by one of our highly trained beerologists.

After the tour there is a half hour tasting. We get the majority of our barley from right here in Alberta. Alberta produces some

of the best barley in the world and we are proud to use that. Additionally, we source grains from around the world, in accord-

ance to our recipes.

The tour covers everything brewing, starting in our mill room, through to brewing, cellaring and filtering. We then head over to

our bottling plant before finishing in our guest loft for samples.

DAY 1: TUESDAY, JULY 10th 2018 continued…

1pm: Visit to Glengary Bison Gary will talk about the challenges and the business strategies that helped develop his business. Glengary Bison was established in 1997 and is located just a short drive North of Calgary. It is operated by Gary Sweetnam and Cynthia Austin. Glengary Bison vision is to produce and promote top quality bison for breeding, as well as providing a unique, affordable, and wonderful red meat source for today’s health conscious consumer. Glengary bison are processed at a provincial government in-spected abattoir which is the finest and cleanest in Alberta. All of our products are 100% bison and are represented as such; no filler or any other meat source is added in production. In September of 2003 we built an on-site farm store and installed a walk-in freezer in order to keep pace with this expanding industry.

3:00pm Hilton Ventures and Origin Malting and Brewery

Hilton Ventures is a 5th generation, multifamily operation. Our farm is just down the road from Origin Malting, and we are proud

to supply them with premium 2 row malting barley. We have been growing malt barley for over 40 years, and appreciate that

Origin has recognized the high quality, nutrient dense barley we produce locally.

Our farm helped pioneer the soil conservation movement decades ago and we continue to refine best management practices

that build this resource. Our family has been recognized in The Canadian Conservation Hall of Fame. To us, the key to our success

is right below our feet. “Our Soil!” Working with the climate and our soil, our team grows some of the best barley in the world.

This farming system allows us to capture thousands of Tonnes of CO2 each and every year. We lock the C deep in the roots, use

it to build the biology of our soil, and the O2 is released back into nature.

We will be providing Origin Malting with an outstanding traceable product, grown from a truly sustainable heritage that will help

Origin create a masterpiece, and all from just down the road!

Origin's local Barley to Beer story starts at our family roots! Origin Malting & Brewing Co. is a local family run business in Strathmore, Alberta. We take Alberta malting barley, known to be the best barley in the world, grown on our local 5th generation family farm, to produce quality malt and supply craft breweries in Alberta. Origin uses state-of-the-art malting equipment to supply top quality product with full traceability back the exact field it was har-vested from! We proudly produce our own craft beer in-house to showcase our craft malt.

Origin prides our self in supporting local farmers and breweries and fostering a relationship between the farmer, the maltster, and the brewers alike. www.originmalting.com

DAY 2: JULY 11th 2018, CALGARY (Breakfast and lunch provided)

Speakers & presentations

8am: Breakfast in the conference room

Merle Good, GRS Consulting Inc.

His past career as a Provincial Tax Specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry has given him a unique position to

discuss farm succession planning and Alberta's agricultural land trends.

Merle will discuss two topics..

Retiring into your child’s farm company

Would you rather be a creditor or shareholder in your farming child’s company when you reach 65??

Retirement is not an a verb that is well understood in Agriculture. Too many consultants still view” Freedom 55” as

the ultimate goal. Freedom for our Industry is not ‘greasing the combine any more” but still “running one”.

Eventually however, the shift in roles and responsibilities have to change. Parents can still” be on the bus” but cannot

“be driving the bus”. This session will indicate how this is accomplished, in a very effective Tax plan but more im-

portantly the creation and an understanding of a new business and family relationship.

Larry Martin, Ph.D. Principal, Agri-Food Management Excellence

Presentation to AME Alumni on BDO Project

This project was initiated for three reasons: to test whether the operating statement ratios we teach in CTEAM are

still correct; to determine whether additional ratios can be identified; and to show the management applications of

the standardized specification of the operating statement. In this presentation, Larry will summarize the results to

date of the project, illustrate how they can be used in management, and update the next steps in the project.

DAY 2: JULY 11th 2018, CALGARY continued..

Tom Droog: Spitz Sunflower Seeds

Tom Droog arrived in Canada with his wife, Emmy, in 1972 with just $125 to his name and a desire to farm.

Seventeen years later he had already revolutionized sunflower seed farming in the Bow Island region of Alberta. Spitz,

his brand of snack-food sunflower seeds was quickly gaining market share. Since then, Tom bought out his main com-

petitor and grew Spitz into a $32,000,000-per year company, which he sold to Pepsico in 2008.

Tom will tell the story behind the success of Spitz Sunflower Seeds, offering valuable advice and experience on manag-

ing growth, staying on top of your company's finances and sharing his experience with branding and the export mar-

ket.
