Amelia Earhart has remained a legendary heroine for generations of girls; however, 83 years after Earhart’s historic flight, women are still far outnumbered in the workforce in physics, computer sciences and engineering. They make up just under 30 percent of the world’s scientists, and less than 10 percent of space scientists are women. Zonta International annually awards women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or engineering with the Amelia Earhart Fellowship. Helping these talented women achieve their educational and professional goals is just one way Zonta carries out its mission to give women access to all resources and the ability to be represented in decision-making positions on an equal basis with men. On January 11, 1935, legendary pilot Amelia Earhart embarked on a 2,408 mile trip from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California. This is only one of her many remarkable achievements and in commemoration Zonta has chosen this date as Amelia Earhart Day. Today, we remember her contributions to the aerospace industry and her empowerment of women in science to encourage more women to pursue advanced education and careers in these still male-dominated fields. Zonta International annually awards women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or engineering with the Amelia Earhart Fellowship. “Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And, when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.” Amelia Earhart

Zonta is AWESOME Greetings All and hope you are enjoying the new year. The Zonta year is flying by and we have four more months to the end of our year. It looks like these four months are going to be busy ones. Together, we have already accomplished so much and there is still a lot to do. In February, we will be hosting Trivia Nite which is always fun and has been a great source for fundraising. Also, we have a great speaker Sheri Scavone for our February meeting. Then along comes March and we will again be looking at nominating and selecting your officers and directors for the 2018-2019 year. It will also be time to formulate our budget for the next year, and of course March is International Women’s Month. This year for the first time, our Awards and Recognition Nite will be held in April. In May, we will host a breakfast/brunch which will not only serve as our last fundraiser for the year but also a vehicle to spread the word about our organization, our mission and who were are in the community. All this though could not be accomplish without the hard work and efforts of all our members. Again, thank you for all you do and

the impact you have on the lives of women and young girls.

In September 2017, and following up the direction approved by the 2016 Convention, Zonta International President Sonja Hönig Schough announced Zonta International’s support for UN Women’s HeForShe campaign, a global movement that aims to mobilize 1 billion men to accelerate the achievement of gender equality. Through innovative online, offline and mobile phone technology, HeForShe identifies and activates men and boys in every city, community and village around the world. Recognizing that gender equality is not a women’s issue, but a human rights issue, it provides education and tools to help men and boys to identify what matters to them and what they will do to contribute to gender equality. Individuals, organizations and students can take advantage of the tool kits that facilitate the transition from awareness to action, and thus increase the participation and commitment of men and boys to change the world and to achieve gender equality in this 21st century!

Their goal is to work with individual women, businesses, community organizations and government to reduce barriers to advancement and equal pay. Sheri believes: "The whole intent is to make Buffalo a better place for women to live, grow, and work."

Service Award Recognition

As an organization that seeks to empower women through service and advocacy, Zonta International believes it is important to recognize its clubs and districts for their outstanding service projects that benefit women in their communities. The Zonta Service Recognition Award was established during the 2012-2014 biennium to highlight the incredible service work Zontians perform to improve the lives of women and girls in communities across the globe. The Award is given at the end of each biennium at the International Convention, and recognizes six of the most outstanding service projects sponsored by clubs and up to three sponsored by districts. Zonta Cheektowaga Lancaster has been nominated by District 4 for consideration for one of these awards. Our submission of Zonta is Awesome campaign which serves as continuum for service and advocacy is being considered. Final selections will be made at the International Convention in Japan. Congratulations Ladies!!!!!

All Member Alert!

We’re trying something new. A breakfast/brunch (tbd) on May 5th will be held at the Columns restaurant. A survey has been sent to all members soliciting feedback on your thoughts, ideas and recommendations to make this event a success. This is a great opportunity not just to raise funds but also to promote Zonta and our mission. It also allows us to promote who were are in the community and how our contributions have made a difference in the lives of women and young girls. If you haven’t filled out the survey yet, please take a minute to do so. Every members’ voice is important and we would like to hear from you all. Your voice and your contributions make a difference in the results we achieve and our ability to carry out Zonta’s mission.

KUDOS

Kudos goes out to Ann Laubaucker for a great presentation on Amelia Earhart during our last business meeting. It was both informative and entertaining and we all certainly learned a few new things about the life of Ms. Earhart. Thanks again Ann!
