Day & Light
The characters
Introduction:
Light and day are symbols of
reason and knowledge.
Night and darkness are
symbols of passion and
instinct.
As two sides of the same reality, they symbolize the
interdependence of reason and passion
Allegory of Plato’s Cave
Plato said that we are prisoners in a cave
and we only see the shadows of objects,
not the real things. When we will be freed,
going out of the cave, we´ll see all the
truth to lead us out of the dark and into
the day. The outside of cave means
science and reason.
But in the play the light and darkness
change their meanings, light is oppression
and darkness is freedom.
Night & Darkness
At the night of the play there are
the instincts and chaos of the
forest, but also the solution to all
the love problems. This happens in
the nature.
The wood is the place outside the
town where the laws don't apply.
At the day of the play there are
the law and order of Athens, but
also confusion because there was
a loving disorder. This happens in
the town.
Day & Light
The charactersHippolyta and Theseus and Titania and Oberon are mirrored couples.
Opposite sides of the same themes like the light and the darkness.
The feelings of the characters are too deep for be in the parameters of the reason, while the light limits
them, creates orden.
