+Toolbox Unit

Goals: to give you all the basic tools most writers use to generate ideas and make your writing alive.

If I told you to write me a story tonight, I predict most of them would be . . . well, not very good. (Mine either!) Why?

+Importance of Play . . .

Our best material comes from playing, without fear and without judgment.

Think about yourself as a child. Did you think you were a good artist? Did you think you think you were a good actor? Did you think you sang well? (Or did you care if you

didn’t?) Did you like the stories you wrote and told? Did you think you were a good dancer?

+Inner Critic vs. Inner Creator

+#1 Freewriting Rules

1. Write without stopping.

2. Write for the whole time.

3. Don’t worry about spelling and grammar (for now!).

4. Follow the dog.

+Freewriting Hints

Have any of you kept a journal before? Why’d you stop?

Start in the present moment with what you are thinking and feeling.

Describe your surroundings using all your senses.

If you feel stiff or self-conscious, write about it!

+Close Your Eyes and Think of Nothing . . .

+What Happened?

+Hear your teacher’s freewrite . . .

Written just this morning!

No idea where I was going . . .
