IN WHAT is believed to be a firstin the history of the Northern Terri-tory, the Katherine Anzac Day marchwill showcase a banner for Aborigi-nal and Torres Strait Islanders whofought in the wars of the 20th centuryor who are currently serving theircountry.

Ellen Gough, Chairperson for theKatherine Stolen Generation Aborig-inal Corporation said the Corporationhad created the Anzac Banner for theannual march on April 25.

“There has never been a banner inthe Anzac March here in Katherinefor Indigenous people who fought in

the wars or for the serving membersand their families,” Ms Gough said.

“There were about 400 to 500 people of Aboriginal heritage whofought in the First World War, and inrecognition of those who served ourcountry at Gallipoli and in wars andconflicts throughout the century,

we will be marching with the newbanner,” she said.

Ms Gough said throughout thewars Aboriginal people “never re-ceived recognition or the same enti-tlements”, which is why she is nowrallying to give those who served theircountry- the unsung heroes - the

recognition and support they deserve. Ms Gough said she would like to

encourage descendants of those whofought for their country, to march be-hind the ‘Unsung Heroes’ banner thisAnzac Day.

The RSL has officially approvedof the new Anzac Day banner.
