SALEM TWP. — Workersat the SusquehannaNuclearPower Plant successfullystopped a Freon leak thattriggered an “alert” statusTuesday.

At 11: 35 p.m. Tuesday, plant operator PPL put anendto themorethan14-hour-long “alert”status. Thechill-ing unit — a glorified airconditioner for the reactorbuilding and its equipment — leaked the Freon andforced a partial evacuationof Unit 1.

As part of an “alert,”municipal, county and stateagenciessuchas theLuzerneCountyEmergency Manage-ment Agency are put onnotice that they might needto respond.

“While public safety wasnot at risk during this situ-ation,” PPL spokeswoman

Miriam Mylin said in anews release, “entering theemergency management

plan ensured we had theresources avai lable i f needed to help protect

employees and support thes a f e o p e ra t i on o f t h eplant.”

An “alert” — the second-lowest of four emergencyclassifications — means theleak was an “actual orpotential” risk to plant safe-

ty but included very littleorno radioactive material, according to the NuclearRegulatory Commission’sWebsite.

No radioactive materialwas involved but the areawhere the leak was locatedcontains “plant safety sys-tems.”

The Freon was safelyremoved from the reactor

building, PPL said, andplaced in on-site storagetanks.

E x po s u re t o l a rg eamounts of Freon over ashort period of time canhave negativehealth effects, according to the U.S. Envi-

ronmentalProtectionAgen-cy.PPL said no employees

reported any injuries.A back-up chilling system

allowed Unit 1 to remainoperating at full power dur-ingthe leak.

Unit 2 was not affected bytheevent.
