Brainstorming ideas for my magazine cover and poster

Magazine CoverWhen I started looking into magazine covers for film magazines I began by looking at some of the most popular, including Total Film and Empire magazines

Here are some examples of the covers that these magazines have used previously:

The same running theme is used throughout these different covers, the use of either a singular main character or the film’s main characters are shown on the cover. There are also have been variants of a magazine front cover portraying the same film but different characters are used for the main image, an example of this are The Hobbit front covers from Empire magazine, this was utilized to make the magazine collectible.

However, I noticed that it was rare for them to have just a comedy film as their front cover image. They are usually seen joined together with other films. This gave me a possible idea of how to design my film on a magazine cover

What I Like From These Magazine Covers:Body Language and Facial Expression – I definitely like that the actors the posed for the magazine covers posed in a way that show their character from the film. For example The Anchorman 2 cast have all different facial expressions to show their characters on the film. I will be doing a provocative pose or gesture that will be fitting for my character.

Colour Scheme - The colour scheme of the front cover of Empire’s Pirates of The Caribbean is very well mixed as it does not suck out all the attention from the main image, this an excellent colour scheme to try out if you want all the attention to be on the main image of the magazine cover. I will try to recreate the colour scheme used for this cover on my own.

Background: Empire’s Scott Pilgrim Vs The World uses a gradient background instead of a plain white like The Achorman or a genuine location like Pirates of the Caribbean. I think this would be great for my magazine as it can help reflect the mood of the film. I will be using a gradient background for my magazine.

Film PosterI started looking into film posters I began by looking at some of the most popular

Here are some examples of the poster that are well renowned:

As detailed on my analysis of film posters it is always in the same layout starting at the top: quote line, main image, film title, production details and then release date. However the positioning of these can be varied to your liking. The film posters are usually set out in a very striking manner to

intrigue people and it is also has to be very stylish as some people like to hang them on their walls. So to truly succeed in my aux task I need to try reproduce a professionally done poster in a very high standard.

What I Like From These Magazine Covers:Body Language and Facial Expression – Much like the magazine covers I definitely like that the actors the posed for the magazine covers posed in a way that show their character from the film. I will be doing a provocative pose or gesture that will be fitting for my character.

Colour Scheme - The Scott Pilgrim poster is relatively simplistic, white text and red background, by doing so all the attention is placed on the main image of the poster. The green t-shirt and blue jeans contrast well against the red background. Much like the poster for Scott Pilgrim I will be utilising a simplistic colour scheme that draws the attention to the main image.
