Green vegetables likecauliflower arrive at themandi largely fromHaryana and neighbouringdistricts of Uttar Pradesh.However, supply fromthese traditional supplyareas has stopped. Thishappens every year duringthis season. There has beena sudden increase in theprices of cauliflower now asfields in the surroundingStates have beensubmerged due to the rain.The supply at this stage isonly from HimachalPradesh. The recent rainhas played spoilsport, saidAzadpur Mandi traderSuresh Mukhiya. Supply ofother greens has also beenaffected.

Traders said the retailersare forced to sell theproduce at a premium as

they have to paycommission to the mandimanagement, apart frompaying the transportationcost.

We need to paytransportation cost at twostages. Apart from payingthe local transporter forcarrying the load to thevehicles, we incur extracost for transporting it toour retail shop. A margin ofRs.10 to Rs.15 over thewholesale rate isunavoidable, said SureshKumar, a vegetable sellerat Sultanpuri, who was atthe Azadpur Mandi forpurchase.

While prices of tomatoescontinue to remain high in

the wholesale market,onion prices havestabilised over the past fewdays. Tomato supplycontinues to remainrestricted to just two States Himachal Pradesh andKarnataka.

Tomato supply has notnormalised yet. Evensupply from Himachal hasbeen hit due to the recentrain. However, supply ofonion has stabilised asdaily arrival has beenadequate. On Monday, 120onion trucks arrived at themandi, said AzadpurMandi trader Sikander.

Cauliflowerand peas are being soldbetween Rs.40 and Rs.80 inthe citys wholesalemarkets and for Rs.60 toRs.120 in the retail market,depending on the quality.

According to Venu Raja-mony, Press Secretary tothe President, severalpaintings of Mr. Chowd-hary already form part ofRashtrapati Bhavans artcollection. Mr. Chowdharywill stay at RashtrapatiBhavan for a period of 14days beginning Monday.

The scheme waslaunched by the Presidentin 2013 with the aim ofproviding established aswell as young and upcom-ing writers and artists anopportunity to stay close

to nature in the pictur-esque and serene sur-roundings of RashtrapatiBhavan. The programmeseeks to provide an envi-ronment which will in-spire creative thinking andrejuvenate artistic impuls-es. Various activities like

reading sessions, exhibi-tions of works of art andinteraction with the resi-dents of Rashtrapati Bha-van, etc. are also to beorganised in consultationwith the selected writers/artists under the scheme,said Mr. Rajamony.
