1. There are two verbs to express to be in Spanish. They are ser and estar. Each of these verbs has specific uses. They are not interchangeable. The verb estar is always used to express location, both temporary and permanent.

The verb estar is used to express a permanent or temporary location, temporary state, or a condition. The speaker often chooses the verb ser or estar depending upon the meaning he or she wishes to convey. Observe and analyze the following.

The first sentence uses ser because the meaning conveyed is that the weather is characteristically stormy and nasty in Patagonia. In the second sentence it’s not a characteristic of the weather in that locale. It’s an isolated, temporary condition.

Note that the verb estar with vivo means to be alive. The verb estar is also used with muerto to mean to be dead, even though death is permanent.
