Alhamdulillah, all prise to ALLAH SWT the almighty for the blessing given
to the writer during his study and in completing this thesis. Shalawat and greeting
may always be praised upon the holy prophet Muhammad SAW who has guided us
from darkness into lightness.

M.Si. and Bayu H. Wicaksono, M.Ed., Ph.D as the first and second advisor for their

A STUDY OF TEACHER’S PROBLEM IN TEACHING
LISTENING AT SMPN 11 MALANG
ABSTRACT
Teaching listening has become very important as listening skills are placed
on top of primary skill that should be learnt by students. Therefore, the writer was
intended to describe the process of teaching and learning listening based on the
teacher’s point of view.
The aimed of this study were to find out teacher’s problem in teaching
listening at SMPN 11 Malang, as well as to know how teacher solved the problem.
The design used in this study was descriptive qualitative design. The subject of the
study was the English teacher at seventh grade of SMP N 11 Malang. To collect the
data the writer used observation and interview.
The result of the study showed that there were three problems faced by the
teacher in teaching listening namely problem in managing students’, students’ lack
of motivation, and lack of facilities in the school. To overcome the problem the
teacher tried to apply some ways in teaching listening such as 1). Swapping position
strategy, 2). Giving reward to motivate students, 3). Applying games or songs to
increase students’ vocabulary, and 4). Maximizing the facilities providd in the class.
