About this guideThis document is to be used as a guide only; always use the current on-line Australian Immunisation Handbook for complete and up-to-date advice on vaccines recommended under the National Immunisation Program (NIP).The Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has developed this document to assist immunisation providers in calculating catch-up schedules for people with no documented evidence of previous immunisations. The Australian Immunisation Handbook (10th edition) 2013 states “every opportunity should be taken to review a person’s vaccination history and to administer the appropriate vaccine(s). If the person has not had documented receipt of vaccines scheduled in the NIP appropriate for his/her age, plan and document a catch-up schedule and discuss this with the person to be vaccinated or their parent/carer”. The most important requirement for assessment of vaccination status is written documentation of vaccination. If there is a written record of vaccination, vaccine doses should not be repeated. If prior vaccinations cannot be confirmed due to incomplete documentation, it should generally be assumed that the vaccine(s) have not been given. Serological testing to determine the need for specific vaccinations is not routinely recommended.Once an assessment of any existing vaccination records and other relevant clinical information is undertaken, develop a catch-up plan. The objective of catch-up vaccination is to complete a course of age appropriate vaccination and provide optimal protection as quickly as possible, generally using minimum dosing intervals. This quick catch-up guide provides assistance with creating a catch-up schedule to complete a primary course of vaccination. A copy of the Tasmanian criteria for use of government funded vaccines is included in this document. The criteria lists vaccine provided free and also highlights additional free vaccines for refugees and humanitarian entrants.
Who is Eligible for Funded Vaccines under the NIP? All individuals up to 20 years of age All refugees and other humanitarian entrants aged 20 years and over
Free Translating ServicesNote the Department of Social Services provides a free document translating service for Australian citizens and new migrants settling permanently in Australia. Within the first two years of arriving in Australia, eligible individuals can have key personal documents (including vaccination records) translated into English, free of charge, to assist with settlement into the community. The Free Translating Service is available on the Department of Social Services website.Reporting to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)Providers should report to the AIR all vaccinations they give to their patients in Australia and those given overseas where the appropriate documentation is available. If your software does not automatically report vaccinations to the AIR, then you will need to report these vaccinations directly using the AIR site.

Information about registering to send or receive immunisation data from the AIR is available on the Australian Government Department of Human Services website. This guide is valid until January 2019 but may be revised from time to time. How to read the tablesThe tables are read as follows: Age at first visitRefers to the age of the person at presentation for the first series of catch-up vaccines. Visit numberThe first visit refers to the day the first vaccinations are given as a catch-up. Interval dose dueRefers to the time interval required between the doses of vaccines. The minimum spacing between doses is one month. Some vaccines require longer spacing between catch-up doses. Antigens/vaccine brandBoth the antigen and brand names have been used to identify what vaccines are recommended at each age milestone for quick recognition. Each age cohort recommends (where applicable) that the vaccine schedule point be continued with the routine National Immunisation Program following completion of catch-up doses. Combination vaccines such as Infanrix Hexa, Infanrix IPV and Menitorix can be used for the primary course of catch-up immunisation in children less than 10 years of age. If the recommended intervals between doses are exceeded, there is no need to recommence the schedule or give additional doses because the immune response is not impaired by such delays.

Medical risk factorsDepending on the medical risk factor of an individual, they may require extra doses of vaccine in addition to the National Immunisation Program schedule, or vaccine doses given earlier than required. Please see current edition of The Australian Immunisation Handbook, ‘Groups with special vaccination requirements and vaccination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’ for further information.
