01 What is business partnering?

HR business partnering is not the what, but how HR delivers capability in an

organisational context. HR business partners work closely with leaders and management teams to build business organisational and people capabilities.

CIPD paper - August 2019

How has business partnering changed and evolved?

02 Why is business partnering important?

Removes obstacles - helps you ‘run’ smoother and faster

Helps you succeed together - helping business and people

And for this reason . . . we should see business partnering as a gift!

03 What are the different roles of great business partners?

A great business partner must have an intimate understanding of the business

challenges their team is working to solve and be able to re-frame those challenges through the lens of talent and employee

experience.

5 roles of business partnering

1 - The Strategic Advisor In order to help solve business problems, HRBPs must have an intimate understanding of those problems and the complex set of factors that influence them. To find solutions, great HRBPs need to be asking great questions, thinking holistically about problems, and above all, being curious about what’s really driving a particular problem.

2 - The Data-Driven Problem Solver In the past, HRBPs were often asked questions that had clear answers—like about salaries or onboarding. Now, much of that once privileged HR data is available broadly on the cloud. So HRBPs are responsible for answering more complex questions about strategic problems, the employee experience, and more. To do so successfully, HRBPs have to find the right data, formulate and test hypotheses, and design novel solutions.

3 - The Influential Storyteller HRBPs have to work with and through the members of our team, both on the business side and the HR side. This can be a challenge. Great HRBPs manage that complexity through a combination of clear communications, relationship building, and proactive management of our networks. The result is a high level of influence over key decisions, even in the absence of direct authority.

5 roles of business partnering

4 - The Trusted Coach HRBPs’ coaching responsibilities can range from giving strategic guidance to executives to helping new hires plan a career path. To do this well, we have to earn teammates’ trust with sensitive information and we must have a clear sense of empathy for their teammates’ situations—regardless of their position on the org chart. HRBPs have to be comfortable navigating difficult discussions and complex, interconnected relationships.

5 - The Independent Voice HRBPs have to navigate between the needs of our business unit and the overall needs of the organization. This tension is designed into the HRBP role, and it presents us with challenges and opportunities. Maintaining an independent perspective and voice within the teams we support allows HRBPs to proactively support key strategic initiatives and shape the direction of our teams in a way no one else can.
