AmélieJuhinwinsESRFYoungScientistaward

Amélie Juhin is thewinnerof theESRF“YoungScientistof theYear2017”.Thisaward ispresentedevery year by the ESRFUsers’Organisation to a scientist aged 37 or younger for outstandingworkconductedattheESRF.ThisprizeisseenasencouragementfromtheESRFforayoungscientistwhoseworkhasalreadybeenrecognisedbypeersandproducedfruitfulresults.AmélieJuhinisaphysicistandspectroscopist,researcheratthe“Institutdeminéralogie,dephysiquedes matériaux et de cosmochimie” (CNRS/Université Pierre et Marie Curie-Sorbonne-Universités/Institut de Recherche pour le Développement/Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle). She wasawardedtheprizeforherexperimentalandtheoreticalstudiesofresonantX-rayscatteringandX-raydichroism,carriedoutattheESRF.AmélieJuhin’sresearchisfocusedonprobingtheelectronicandmagneticpropertiesofnanoparticlesandmolecularmagnets.Forthisresearch,sheusesthepowerfulX-raysproducedbytheESRF,theEuropeansynchrotron,inGrenoble.SheexploresboththeexperimentalandtheoreticalaspectsofsoftandhardX-rayspectroscopiesandhasdevelopedmagneticspectroscopieswithX-rays.Agedjust36,sheisalreadyrecognisedasaninternationalexpertinthisfield.AfterobtainingaPhDin2008fromtheUniversitéPierreetMarieCurie,inParis,AmélieJuhinpursuedapost-doctoralfellowshipattheDebyeInstituteforNanomaterialsScience,inTheNetherlands.ShewasrecruitedbytheFrenchNationalCentreforScientificResearch(CNRS)andjoinedtheInstituteofMineralogy,PhysicsofMaterialsandCosmo-Chemistry(IMPMC)in2010.HercontributiontothefieldofdichroismandX-rayresonantinelasticscatteringhasalreadyearnedrecognitionfromherpeersasdemonstratedbytheFarrelLytleAwardfromtheInternationalX-rayAbsorptionSocietythatshereceivedin2015andaBronzeMedalfromtheCNRSin2016.

Herworkrevolvesaroundthreemainthemes:

AmélieJuhinhasbeenaregularuserattheESRF’sbeamlinesID26andID12formorethan10years.Sheusesthesebeamlinestomeasureandinterpretdifferentdichroisms,likeX-raynaturallineardichroism(XNLD)andX-raymagneticcirculardichroism(XMCD).Magneticspectroscopies(XMCDandresonantinelasticX-rayscatteringRIXS-MCD)areappliedtodifferentsystems:molecularmagnets,core-shellnanoparticles,magneticmulti-layersandferrofluids.ThroughclosecollaborationwithteamsfromtheESRF,namelywithscientistsPieterGlatzelandMauroRovezzionID26,AmélieJuhindevelopedanovelmagneticspectroscopy(photon-in,photon-out),theRIXS-MCD.Forthemagnetismcommunityaswellasforotherscientificdisciplinessuchasearthsciences,thisnewmagneticspectroscopyhasproducedanumberoforiginalresultswhichhavebeenthesubjectofinternationalpublications,anditopensnewpathsofinvestigation.ThiscollaborationwillbereinforcedwiththenewgenerationofsynchrotronsunderconstructionbytheESRFandscheduledforoperationin2020.AsAmélieJuhinunderlines:“withunprecedentedperformancesintermsofbrilliance,resolutionandbeamcoherence,theESRF-EBSprojectwillprovidenewscientificopportunitiesthatwillallowmetotakeonnewchallengesintheareasofmagneticnano-sizedobjects.” AbouttheESRF:TheESRF–theEuropeanSynchrotron–isalargescaleinternationalresearchinstrument,locatedinGrenoble,France.TheESRFistheworld-leadingsourceofsynchrotronX-raysoperating43beamlineswithstate-of-the-artinstrumentationforimagingandstudying thestructureofmatterat theatomicandnanometricscale inall fieldsof research.Founded in1988, theESRF isamodelof Europeanand International cooperationwith21partner countries, ofwhich13areMembers, and8 are ScientificAssociates. Following the success of the ESRFUpgrade Programme Phase I (180M€ in the period 2009-2015), the ESRF haslaunchedtheESRF-EBSproject(ExtremelyBrilliantSource).Itrepresentsaninvestmentof150M€overtheperiod2015-2022,andfocusesontheconstructionofanewstorageringwithunprecedentedperformances.
