What is a Nursing Theory?

•  Nursing theories are organized, knowledge-based concepts that define the scope of nursing practice.

• What does that mean??? • Theories describe what nursing is, what we do, and why we do it!

Nursing Theory

•  The early part of nursing history, there was little nursing knowledge!! As nursing education developed, the need to categorize knowledge led to the development of nursing theories!

•  For example…. Let’s look at FAYE GLENN ABDELLAH

NURSING THEORIST Faye Glenn Abdellah (1919-2017)

•  Abdellah’s work changed the focus of nursing from disease centered to patient centered and began to include the care of families and the elderly in nursing care.

•  Abdellah developed “The Patient Assessment of Care Evaluation” (PACE) that is now the standard method to evaluate healthcare in the United States.

Nursing Pioneers Who were the firsts?

Florence Nightingale 1820-1920

•  “Founder of Modern Nursing”

•  History of Modern Nursing began in 1849

•  Nightingale Pledge for Nurses written by Lystra Eggert

Clara Barton 1821-1912

•  Founder of the __________________________! (Google the name she what she founded!)

•  Established National First Aid Association of America

Mary Eliza Mahoney 1845-1926

•  Google the name and see who she is!!
