WehavechosenthisuniquetrendinbotanicalartsasthethemefortheFriends’2006annualreport.JoinusforalookinsidetheFriendsofBoernerBotanicalGardens.

ThereisnobetterplacetovisitinMilwaukeethanBoernerBotanicalGardens.Boerneroffersthesurroundingcommunityculturalopportunitiesalongwithstimulationofenvironmentawarenessandlifelonglearning.TheFriendsofBoernerBotanicalGardenssustaintheculturalheritage,supporteducationandpromotetheBoernerGardensasacenterofcommunityengagement.

In 2006, the Board and staff of the Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens participated in an organizationalassessmenttostrengthenoperations,buildcapacityandenhancecommunicationthroughouttheorganization.Throughthisprocesswedefinedoutcomeswithaclearerfocusonourmission,energizedstaffandvolunteers,andenactedgovernancepoliciestobecomemoreresponsivetoourstakeholders.

TheWednesdayWalkingClassesgainedpopularityandattendanceasafrequentwalkerprogramwasintroduced.IndividualsinterestedinacquiringinformationonhowtoincorporatetheplantsanddesignsfeaturedatBoernerBotanicalGardensregularlyattendedthesesummerfavorites.TheAnnualGardenTrendsSymposiumheldinOctoberfeaturedakeynoteaddressbynotedregionalplantgrower,RoyDiblik.Royeducatedthesold-outaudienceontheprinciplesofdesigningwithplantcommunities.Aplantcommunitycanbedefinedasanassemblageofplantspecieswhichinteractamongthemselvesandwiththeirenvironmentwithinatime-spaceboundary.Roydeliveredhismessagewithavisualslidepresentationtoillustratethedesignconcepts.Otherlocalandregionalhorticulturalexpertsaddressedtopicsrelatedtofallandwinterpreparations.

AdultEducationEducationisakeytenetforagardentobeclassifiedasabotanicalgarden.TheFriendsofBoernerBotanicalGardensarecommittedtobringinghorticulturalexpertisetoprovideeducation,advancetheskillfulcultivationofplants,andpromotetheawarenessandappreciationoftheenvironment.

TheBoernerBotanicalGarden’sLibraryisaspecialresourceforgardenersandgardenloversalike.Hundredsofprivatelydonatedbookcollections,periodicalsandnurserycatalogsarepartofthecollection,manyofwhicharenotavailableatotherlibraries.Thereisaspecialcornerofourlibrarydedicatedtochildrenwithheightappropriatefurnitureandageappropriatebooks.

TheBoernerBotanicalGarden’sLibraryoftheFriendsreceivedfundingfromthreemajorsourcesin2006.AgiftfromtheprestigiousStanleySmithHorticultureTrust

providedfortechnologyresourcesforlibraryusers.TheKarenJ.GlanertCharitableTrustdonatedmonieswhichallowedtheLibrarytoincreasethecollectionandananonymousdonorcreatedanendowmentforfuturestaffing.(Thirdsource???)

TheLibrarywasthefortunaterecipientofthelargesseoftwolongtimeBoernersupporterswhopassed

awayin2005.Gardenandtravelwriters,JoanPrinceandMaryAliceKoehnewillberememberedfortheirloveofbeautyandwillingnesstosharetheirexperiences.TheLibrarycollectioncontinuestogrowthroughthegenerosityofsuchgivingindividuals.PerhapsyouhavebooksorperiodicalsyoucoulddonatetotheFriendssowecancontinuetoincreasetheresourceswemakeavailable.

Gift ShopTheGiftShopsupportsthegeneraloperationsoftheFriendsofBoernerBotanicalGardensbysellingmerchandisethatpromotesinterestinhorticultureandenhancesthevisitorsexperiencewithbotanicalandgarden-themedmerchandise.Asamuseumstoreitisourgoaltoprovideauniqueshoppingvenue.MembersoftheFriendsofBoernerBotanicalGardensreceivea10%discountonallstoremerchandise.

Thegiftshopisoperatedbyretailmanager,JenniferSchmitzandassistantRobbSeftar.Themerchandiseispersonallyselectedbyaboardcommitteeandtheshopisstaffeddailybyadedicatedteamofvolunteers.

SpiritandencouragesallAmericanstoInspirebyExample.

Over200Friends’volunteersdemonstratedtheirspiritbycontributingover1,000hourstoproducetheAmericanGirlFashionShowinMarch,2006.

Approximately275volunteersgaveover4,000hoursoftheirtimetotheFriendsofBoernerBotanicalGardensin2006.Thesemenandwomenareoftenthe“face”oftheFriendsandaredueagreatdebtofgratitudeforalltheydofortheFriendsandBoernerBotanicalGardens.

EducationChildren’sHorticultureEducationGeneroussupportfromgrantsandindividualstotaling$90,000madeitpossibleforover10,000childrentoattendplantsciencebasedprogramsbothinschoolandhereatBoernerBotanicalGardens.Knowledgeofplantscienceisimportantforchildrentounderstandtheimportantroleplantsplayinsustainingandpromotinglife.TheFriendsofBoernerBotanicalGardenschargeanominalfeeof$3.50perstudentwhichrepresentsthedirectcostsassociatedwiththeclass.Allofourclassesaretaughtbycertifiededucatorsandincludealectureandplantingactivity.

Thecosttoproducetheseeducationexperiencesisactually$13.00perstudent.Thesupportofcharitableindividualsandorganizationsmaketheseclassesareality.

PlantHopeIn2006theMPS“PlantHope”Projectreceived$19,000ingrantsfromBertL.&PatriciaS.SteiglegerCharitableTrust,TheServiceClubofMilwaukee,TheHelfaerFoundationandTheOrtgiesenFoundation.“PlantHope”isdesignedtopromotestudentunderstandingofplantscienceconceptsinafunandengagingmanner.

Thirdgradestudentsfromthreeyear-roundMilwaukeePublicSchoolshavebeenselectedforthepilotprogram.TheFriendsofBoernerBotanicalGardensplantsciencecurriculumisbeingtaughttomorethan238studentsfromBruceGuadalupeSchool,Starms

DiscoverySchoolandCongressElementarySchool.Itisbelievedthatchildrenatthisgradelevelbenefitthemostfromthistypeofinstructionbecauseoftheirpositiveattitudesandflexibilityaslearners.

Aspartoftheprogram,eachclasswillbeassignedagardenplotintheTrialGardensatBoernerBotanicalGardens.TheBoernerhorticulturalstaffwillteachthestudentshowtoamendthegardensoilusingvermicultureandcompost,howtosowseedsandthebasicsofgardenmaintenance.Atharvestthestudentswillprepareastirfrymealintheirclassroomtoreinforcetheirlearningandunderstandingofthefoodchain.

Mission StatementThe Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens promote the Gardens as a unique resource for understanding

and enjoying nature, horticulture, recreation and the environment. Through sponsorship of programs

emphasizing education, the arts and the Gardens as a living museum, the Friends endeavor to preserve and enhance the natural and historical assets of the Gardens for its visitors.
