Network ConfigurationHaveyournetworknameandpassword(ifyouuseone)andyourAppleRemotehandywhenyouconfigureAppleTV.MakesuretherearenoobstructionsbetweentheremoteandAppleTV.Forinformationaboutusingyourremote,seeChapter3,“Watch.”onpage19.

Ifyou:

 Use a wired Ethernet network to connect,AppleTVautomaticallydetectsyournetwork.

 Use a wireless network to connect,AppleTVhelpsyouselectandconfigureyournetworkconnection.

1 Selectyournetworkfromthelist,orenteryournetworknameifthenetworkishidden.

Updating Your iTunes SoftwareYoucanupdatetothelatestversionofiTunes.

 On a Mac,useSoftwareUpdatetoupdatetothelatestversionofiTunes.TouseSoftwareUpdate,chooseApple()>SoftwareUpdate.

 On a Windows-based computer,gotoiTunesHelptoupdatetothelatestversionofiTunes.OpeniTunes,andthenchooseHelp>CheckforUpdates.

Setting Up Home SharingAfteryousetupyournetworkconnection,youneedtosetupiTunesandAppleTVtosharethecontentsofyouriTuneslibrary.UseHomeSharinginiTunesandonAppleTVtosharetheiTuneslibraryofanycomputeronyourlocalnetworkthathasHomeSharingsetup.

To unpair Apple TV from a paired remote:1 ChooseSettingsfromtheAppleTVmainmenu.

2 ChooseGeneral>Remotes>UnpairAppleRemote.

Whenyousuccessfullyunpairthelostremote,AppleTVdisplaysabrokenchainlinksymbol( )aboveapictureofaremote.YoucannowpairAppleTVwithadifferentremote.

Changing the Remote BatteryWhenthebatterychargeinyourAppleRemoteislow,AppleTVdisplaysapictureofaremoteandawarningsymbol(·).ReplacethebatterywithaCR2032battery.

Batterycompartment

To replace the battery:1 Useacointoremovethebatterycompartmentcover.

2 Removethebattery.

3 InsertaCR2032batterywiththepositiveside(∂)facingup.

4 Replacethebatterycompartmentcoveranduseacointotightenit.

Important:  Disposeoftheusedbatteryaccordingtoyourlocalenvironmentallawsandguidelines.

Renting Movies and Purchasing TV ShowsYoucanrentstandardorhigh-definitionmoviesandpurchaseTVshowsdirectlyonAppleTV(whereavailable).Followtheonscreeninstructionstofindoutwhenarentedmovieexpires.PurchasedTVshowsdon’texpire.

Whenarentedmovieexpires,it’snolongeravailableforplayback.Towatchitagain,youcanrentitagainfromiTunes.

TroubleshootingIfyouhaveaproblemwithAppleTV,there’susuallyaquickandsimplesolution.First,makesure:

 ThecablesbetweenAppleTVandyourTVarepushedinalltheway.

 ThepowercordsforAppleTVandyourTVaresecurelyconnectedtoaworkingpowersource.

 YourTVisturnedonandsettothecorrectinput.

 AppleTVisconnectedtoyournetwork.GototheSettingsmenuonAppleTV,selectNetwork,andseeifAppleTVhasanIPaddress.

 YournetworkandInternetconnectionsareonandworkingproperly.

Ifyoustillhavetrouble,tryresettingyourequipmentbydisconnectingAppleTV,yourTV,yourwirelessnetworkingequipmentorbasestation,andyourrouterfromthepoweroutlet.Wait30seconds,andthenreconnecteverything.

If the remote isn’t working PointtheremotedirectlyatAppleTV.

 IfyoupairedAppleTVwithanAppleRemote,makesureyou’reusingthepairedremote.

 Ifyou’reusinganunpairedremote,theAppleTVstatuslightflashesthreetimes.

 IfyoupairedAppleTVwithanAppleRemoteandyoucan’tfindthepairedremote,setAppleTVtoworkwithanyAppleRemotebyholdingdownMenuandLeftfor6secondsonanotherremote.

 MakesurethefrontofAppleTVisn’tblocked.

 IfAppleTVdisplaysapictureofaremoteandawarningsymbol(·),youneedtoreplacethebatteryintheremote.See“ChangingtheRemoteBattery”onpage23.

If Apple TV can’t access the network ChecktheIPaddressAppleTVisusing.Ifitstartswith169.x.x.x,therouterorbasestationmaynotbeconfiguredproperly.ChecktoseeifDHCPaccessisavailable,orconfigureAppleTVwithamanualIPaddress.

 Checkforanyobstructions,andadjustthelocationofthebasestationorAppleTV.

 Ifsecurityisenabledonthenetwork,temporarilydisableitonthebasestationandtryconnectingagain.

 AppleTVcannotconnecttoawirelessnetworkthatcontainshigh(extended)ASCIIordouble-byte(Unicode)characters(suchasJapanese,Korean,orChinese)inthenameorpassword.

 Ifyournetworkhassecurityenabled,makesureyouenterthecorrectpassword.

If your TV screen appears fuzzy or black Makesureyou’reusingthecorrectHDMIcableandthatit’sconnectedfirmlytoAppleTVandtoyourTV.

 MakesuretheinputsettingonyourTVmatchestheinputporttheHDMIcableisconnectedto.Forinformation,seethedocumentationthatcamewithyourTV.

 MakesureyourHDTVsupports720pvideo.

If you can see a picture but Apple TV isn’t responding HolddownMenuontheAppleRemotetoreturntotheAppleTVmainmenu.

 MakesureyourTVisturnedonandfunctioningproperly.Forinformation,seethedocumentationthatcamewithyourTV.

 IfyoupairedanAppleRemotewithAppleTV,makesureyou’reusingthepairedremote.See“PairingAppleTVwithaRemote”onpage21.

 ResetAppleTVbydoingoneofthefollowing:

 HolddownbothMenuandDownontheAppleRemoteuntiltheAppleTVstatuslightblinksrapidly.

 DisconnectAppleTVfromthepoweroutlet,waitaboutfiveseconds,andthenreconnectit.

 ChooseGeneral>ResetSettingsfromthemainmenuonAppleTV.

If Apple TV doesn’t respond, try restoring it OnAppleTV,chooseSettings>General>Reset,andthenselectRestore.

RestoringAppleTVcantakesometime,sobepatient.

 Ifyournetworkdoesn’tuseDHCP,chooseConfigureTCP/IPandentertheTCP/IPconfiguration.

 IfAppleTVstilldoesn’trespond:

 DisconnectthepowerandHDMIcablesfromAppleTV.

 ConnectoneendofamicroUSBcable(soldseparately)tothebackofAppleTV,andtheotherendtoyourcomputer.

 OpeniTunesonyourcomputer,selectAppleTVintheSourcelist,andthenclickRestore.

If you can’t hear sound IfAppleTVisconnectedtoahometheaterreceiver,makesurethereceiveristurnedon.

 MakesuretheinputsettingyouselectedonyourTVorreceivermatchestheinputyouhaveyouraudiocableconnectedto.Formoreinformation,seethedocumentationthatcamewithyourreceiver.

 MakesurethevolumeonyourTVorreceiveristurnedupandisn’tmuted.

 Makesureyou’reusingthecorrectaudiocableandthatit’sconnectedfirmlytoAppleTVandtoyourTVorreceiver.

 Ifyou’reusingtheHDMIportforaudio,makesureyourTVsupportsaudiothroughitsHDMIport.TheHDMIportsonsomeolderTVssupportonlyvideo.

If Apple TV isn’t playing your photo albums or slideshows Makesureyouhavephotosinyourphotolibraryorinafolderonyourcomputer.

 MakesureAppleTVandthecomputeryou’reusingaresetupforHomeSharing.See“SettingUpHomeSharing”onpage17.

 Makesurethephotosyouwanttoshareareselected.IniTunes,chooseAdvanced>“ChoosePhotostoShare,”andthenselectthephotosyouwanttoshare.

 MakesureAppleTVandyourcomputerareonthesamelocalnetwork.

 MakesureAppleTVandyourcomputerareusingthesameHomeSharingaccount.

If noise is coming from your TV speakers:Â IfyourTVorspeakerssupportDolbyDigitalaudio,makesuretheDolbyDigitalOutsettingiscorrectforyourTVorspeakers.OnAppleTV,chooseSettings>Audio&Video>DolbyDigitalOut,andselectOnorOff.

If you don’t see your iTunes library under Computers on Apple TV:Â MakesureAppleTVandyourcomputerareonthesamelocalnetwork.
