Romania -The Historical Province of Moldavia

o The historical province of Moldavia is a former principality from the 14th century to 1859, when it united with Wallachia as the basis of the modern Romanian state; at various times, the state included the regions of Bessarabia and all of Bukovina. The western part of Moldavia is now part of Romania and the eastern part belongs to the Republic of Moldova, while the northern and south-eastern parts are territories of Ukraine. Important capital cities from the historical province of Moldavia were: Iasi, Suceava and Vaslui.

o The north-eastern region of Romania includes today 8 counties and these are: Suceava, Botosani, Neamt, Iasi, Bacau,Vaslui,Vrancea and Galati.

Name and Etymology

• The names Moldavia and Moldova are derived from the name of the Moldova River; however, the etymology is not known and there are several variants.

• One of them is based on a legend mentioned in Descriptio Moldaviae by Dimitrie Cantemir and it links its name to an auroch

hunting trip of the Maramureş voivode Dragoş, and the latter's chase of a star-marked bull. Dragoş was accompanied by his female hound called Molda; when they reached shores of an unfamiliar river, Molda caught up with the animal and was killed by it. The dog's name would have been given to the river, and extended to the country.

Iasi – "The City on Seven Hills"

o Iasi is located in the eastern part of Moldavia. The city lies on the Bahlui river, a tributary of Jijia, which flows into the Prut river.

o Home to the first Romanian university, Iasi is known as the cultural capital of Romania and the main economic centre of the region of Moldavia.

o It spreads like Rome on seven hills and it has a population of about 300,000 residents.
