Drama / Sci-Fi

F o n t / T i t l e s- Bold and Capital letters

- Shows that the title is serious or relevant. “Gattaca” clearly stands out.

- The white font and the letters spaced out makes the title look dominant.

-Quote

-This quote is the first thing you see in the sequence.

-Font is in Serif this font is very formal and serious.

-Almost representing that this quote is important to read.

Animation

-Letters C, A an T stand out in bold (letters from Gattaca)

-This shows that these letters are significant and the blurred words are a bit irrelevant.

-This is a representation of the theme DNA.

Gives you a idea of where the location is. Or where a scene is being set.

Shot – Extreme Close Up

Extreme close ups are shot to show specific detail, reaction or emotion of a particular thing.

Shot – Close up

Close up usually focuses on a subject or a persons whole head in one frame.

They used this is this shot to show main characters emotion.

A point of view shot is positioned between a shot and a object or subject to show what the character is looking at or talking to on the opposite side.

This is done in this shot to show what the character is reaching out to get. This shot represents his eyes.

Canted AngleThis is a camera angle which is deliberately slanted to one side.

This is used in this scene for a dramatic effect to portray dramatic effect to help portray unease, intoxication or madness.

Tracking movement

- A tracking shot is a movement perpendicular to the camera lens axis.

- This is done in the sequence to show a slow steady motion of the long strand of hair in detail on the ground.

S o u n d • Non – Diagetic

- At the beginning of the sequence non diagectic sounds starts off very calm and relaxed.

- It then gradually builds tension.

- Instruments used sounds like a Piano (intense soft music) playing throughout.

• Diagetic

- Halfway through the sequence I could hear diagectic sounds of him shaving his hair off his skin.

• There was diagectic sounds of him washing himself.

• There was also sounds of the shower.

S p e c i a l – E f f e c t s

Colour

Not really sure what this represents.

Looks like this has been saturated to make it look more like a early hours of the morning scene or a mid day scene.

This effect is used to make it look like a sunny bright day.

T r a n s i t i o n s

Fade in and Fade Out

- This transition shows him from scraping of bits of his skin to having a shower.

There is a fade in and fade out in between this to show that time is dragging on.

Pace

The 3 screenshots shown above is showing a extreme close up of nail slowly falling on the ground in slow pace.

This is done to show the audience exactly what object is.

-The setting is very isolated. Shows that he is on his own most of the time.

- a isolated setting looks very undercover when somebody is always alone.

Lighting

There is a lot of dark lighting.

This scene in the sequence shows him having a shower in the dark with very low lighting.

This shows that his identity is very hidden.

Props

There is a lot of props like skin, nails and hair. Parts of the body substances

Shows that he does not want to be himself or he is changing his appearance

The Ring 2nd Opening Sequence Analysis

Camera Shots

Extreme close up

This is used to show her scared, terrified feeling towards opening the door

Long Shot

Shows the slow steady journey she took to walk to the door. Building suspense by using no cuts or a quick pace.

Camera AngleLow angle

This was used throughout this part of the sequence

Low angle

This low angle focuses on her feet and her pace walking towards the door

Low angle

This angle is used to show her hesitation towards walking down the corridor.

Camera Movement

Zoom in and

Zoom out camera movements are not very natural in filming but it is used to show action.

It was used here to show a quick reaction of her emotion

Sound• Non – Diagetic The non diagectic sounds that I heard sounded like a broken nursery

rhyme. This relates to children.

Then after the nursery rhyme stops, the music gets very serious almost sounding like electric guitars and heavy metal. This shows that it gradually gets more intense and thrilling.

Diagetic SoundsHigh pitched sound coming from the TV (airy randomness)Sounds of children laughing it sounds very echoed almost ghost like

sounds.

Special Effects

• Fast Forward and Rewind (Blood going into water)

• Then rewind effect to show its going back up

• A range of black and white colour
