About Our Chapter
Atlanta is the home of the Centers for Disease Control and a number of prominent academic research centers including Emory
University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse Medical School, Yerkes National Primate Research Center, and Georgia
State University. The nearby University of Georgia and Georgia Regents University contribute to this research climate, along
with our highly prized hospitals and the network of trained hospital staffers, nurses and doctors who conduct clinical trials for
pharmaceutical companies. Atlanta is the regional hub for hospital technology and medical device industries, and is the home of
a burgeoning biotech industry that some have likened to a potential “Silicon Valley” of Biotechnology.
The Atlanta chapter of Women In Bio was founded in 2012 to cater to women in the burgeoning life sciences sector here. WIB-
Atlanta provides women a space to interact, and exchange information and ideas, through a wide range of social gatherings and
educational workshops. Our membership base includes women researchers, sales, law professionals, business, technology

Young Women In Bio Presents “Science Careers and Life in the Lab at Pfizer CTI”
On April 13, 2017, Pfizer’s Center for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) in Boston hosted a Young Women In Bio event for a group of
middle school girls. The event kicked off with a lab tour and hands-on lab experiment during which the girls learned how to make
“slime.” The group also played a Drug Discovery Game, led by Sara Green and Janet Buhlmann, during which they learned
how much time and money goes into taking a drug from first discovery in the lab to the market. After the game, the girls
enjoyed some pizza while listening to some inspiring Pfizer CTI employees who shared stories about their individual career
paths - both conventional and non-conventional!
Christine Huard helps the girls prep for their lab tour.

WIB-Philadelphia Metro Hosts a Women’s History Month Panel Discussion with Industry Leaders
On March 29, 2017, the WIB-Philadelphia Metro chapter celebrated Women’s History Month with a jam-packed event focused
on obstacles women face in their daily lives. Attendees enjoyed food and cocktails from the Bonefish Grill and had a chance to
network and mingle with each other. We had several guests and brand new members join us in this nearly sold out event!
Chapter President Dunni Odumosu welcomed all of us to get our event started! Once Melissa Dowd, of the chapter
Programming Committee, introduced our Moderator and panelists, the rest of the session flew by with laughter, emotions, and
great advice. Read the entire article!
Panelists (left to right) Laura Conour, Pamela Nichols, Moderator Michelle Grant (DeNigris), Megan Weisheipl, Dr. Ruth

WIB Pittsburgh Holds Entrepreneurship Workshop #1: “Intellectual Property”
On April 6, 2017, WIB-Pittsburgh and Pepper Hamilton LLP came together to organize an intellectual property panel discussion
and workshop at the Pepper Hamilton location in Downtown Pittsburgh. The panelists included Pepper Hamilton attorneys N.
Nicole Stakleff, Aparna Nemlekar, Pierre E. Queiroz de Oliveira, and Melissa A Mares, who covered the basics about
intellectual property, business formation, and founder contributions for any start-up. In addition, Ketaki Desai, the Executive
Director at eCenter@LindenPointe, talked about her experiences of starting her own companies and gave the attendees tips
about what to do and what not to do. At the end of the session, attendees had the chance to network with the panelists while
enjoying great food and drinks, allowing them to learn more about the legal aspects of starting their own companies. A great
thank you to Pepper Hamilton LLP and Jennifer Kuban, their Director of Marketing, for organizing and hosting the event.
Aparna Nemlekar (standing) explains different types of companies that can be formed while Nicole Stakleff (third from left)

Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion at the Carnegie Museum of Art
During this April 20, 2017, pop-up social event, WIB-Pittsburgh members and guests joined a tour of the innovative fashion
exhibit, “Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion,” at the Carnegie Museum of Art. Attendees marveled at the use of 3D printing
and creative polymers that fashion designer Iris van Herpen uses to engineer striking futuristic clothing designs. Her work is
inspired by neuroscience and microbes, science fiction, and the environment. This exhibit is appropriate for the city of
Pittsburgh. We are a city of creative makers and fabricators, a growing center of technology and robotics, and a supportive
place for artists. A combination of Pittsburgh’s growing tech sector and its industrial past uniquely positions the city to
appreciate van Herpen’s designs. She pushes the limits of traditional materials and leans on new materials when that is not
enough. She employs new techniques to wring seemingly impossible forms out of traditional fabrics and common objects.
Women in STEM fields can learn from van Herpen’s innovative mindset to push beyond known limits and think far outside the
box.

Leveraging Partnerships in the Growing Immuno-Oncology Space
On March 16, 2017, women and men from industry and academia gathered at JLABS to learn from experts about the value and
challenges of partnerships in immuno-oncology (I-O). Panel Moderator, Stacy Feld, Vice President of Consumer Venture
Investments and External Innovation at Johnson & Johnson Innovation-JJDC, began the evening with an introduction to the
growing field: I-O-focused drugs are rapidly becoming the standard of treatment for many cancers, and hundreds of I-O
treatments are being evaluated in clinical trials. The opportunities for partnership are myriad, with I-O accounting for more than
half of the deals involving private companies. Read the entire article.
Before and after the panel discussion, panelists and attendees gathered for informal discussions of partnerships and their own
career strategies.

“Be Your Own Driving Force”
In honor of Women’s History Month, on March 30, 2017, WIB-Seattle hosted a talk by Sarah Schneider, creator, and CEO of
The Badassery Project. Over 80 women were in attendance for this deeply thought-provoking event at the gorgeous space of the
Women’s University Club. Sarah explained that, whether consciously or unconsciously, most of us live by sets of rules or
mindsets that can often be harmful to our success. She shared that one such “rule” she had was “money will make you happy”;
other audience members shared that they were taught to “be nice,” or “not stand out.” Sarah encouraged us to challenge these
mindsets, and asked us to think about how we might live differently by not following these so-called rules. Read the entire
article.
