Planning  a  Child  Health  Workforce  for  the  Future  by  the  clinicians  of  the  future

Methods:  SWOT  analysis  by  paediatric  middle  grade  doctors  of  three  possible  reconfigura;on  op;ons

1.  Trained  doctor  solu;on

2.    Closing  more  hospitals

3.    Junior  doctor  recruitment

Dr.  Damian  Roland  –  Chair  of  Trainees  CommiEee  –  RCPCH  and  Running  Horse  Group  Dr.  Ronny  Cheung,  Dr.  Kate  Pryde  and  Dr.  Sebas;an  Yuen  –  Running  Horse  Group  Execu5ve  Dr.  Carol  Ewing  –  RCPCH  Workforce  Officer  Ms  Halcyon  Edwards  –  Managing  Director  –  HRM  Enterprises  Mr  MaEhew  Bluck  –  Managing  Director  –  Kendall  Bluck  Consul5ng

Background:  There  is  a  percep;on  that  trainees  -‐  those  most  affected  by  the  future  delivery  of  Child  Health  Services  -‐  appear  to  be  least  engaged  in  its  evolu;on.  The  Running  Horse  Group  is  a  small  but  rapidly  developing  network  of  paediatricians,  both  trainees  and  consultants,  whose  aim,  amongst  others,  is  to  address  that  issue.  “Planning  a  Child  Health  Workforce  for  the  future”  a  half-‐day  series  of  lectures  and  workshops  held  in  late  2010,  was  the  first  step  in  this  process.  It  was  held  in  collabora;on  with  the  RCPCH  and  the  Greater  Manchester  Children,  Young  People  and  Families’  NHS  Network  [CYPFN].  This  poster  shows  the  outputs  from  a  workshop  on  ‘Reconfigura<on  in  environments  averse  to  change’

RHG The  Running  Horse  Group  Improving  the  quality  of  health  care  for  children:  Giving  clinicians  of  the  present  the  skills  to  be  leaders  of  the  future

Results:  Are  demonstrated  in  three  key  areas

Conclusions:  This  novel  strategy  of  engagement  has  demonstrated  that,  if  harnessed  properly,  the  energy  &  experience  of  trainees  can  be  a  valuable  resource.  Although  not  recommenda;ons  it  is  hoped  the  outcomes  of  the  workshops,  par;cularly  regarding  reconfigura;on,  will  be  taken  forward  by  both  the  RCPCH  and  trusts.  We  recommend  the  CfWI  consider  how  the  future  workforce  will  engage  with  new  and  innova;ve  service  provision  models  in  the  planning  algorithms.
