Good fortune for New Talismaas mine revival ed

The geld and sil 5 ' S nearthe town of Pa bou es'drivesoutheast ()f Au and. The original mine wasfirst worked from 1875 to the early 1920s,then intermittently to about 1992, and in that

time tJroduceli'f about 1Mez of gold at a grade of 28gtt.The company, t'JewTalisman Gold Mines Ltd, with

new chairman Robert Pearce and new executivedirector Paul Griffin, is reviving the old mine into amodern underground gold-silver project and focusedon restarting mining in 2014. A recently completedscoping study with a SO,OOOozlyscenario showed acash cost of about US$63010z and total attributablecost of about US$l ,000/0z of gold are indicated.

The Talisman Project has a granted mining licenceand project development workrequired for approval and consentsfrom the New Zealand authorities isnow under way. A high regard forenvironmental, community and scenicvalues underpins the company's work.

The Talisman Resource is estimatedat 204,0000z of gold (JORC inferred, indicated and measured) with aconceptual geological potential an order of magnitudegreater. The Rahu exploration discovery at depth to thenorth is the anticipated future of the Talisman mine.

be located wherever possible on the many verticalgold-bearing reefs in the mine, minimising thenon-payable development. Cemented backfill will beintegral to the mining method, and will also be used to

restore haulage access where the ore ismined. Developments in enginetechnology of the small undergroundequipment now allows renewable andbiodegradable 100% biofuel to beused, bringing benefits of lower firehazard, lower exhaust toxicity, andzero carbon emissions.'underground monorail train

haulage, compatible with the small truck haulage, is anoption being considered. The electric-powered train hasproductivity matched to the mine output, and it canprovide economic vertical haulage capacity using arack-and-pinion drive.

Talisman will use modern processing methods. Theore will be concentrated to a gold- and silver-rich sand(a third of the tonnage) to be transported elsewhere forsale or further toll-based processing. The remaining

The scale of the underground operationThe new mine will be an underground operation, to beworked on a small scale with ore mining rates of aroundlSO,OOOtly. Tunnel sizes will be 3m x 3m with smallloaders and trucks to suit. The development tunnels will

two-thirds of non-valuable residue will be deliveredusing concrete pumps back underground as cementedbackfill. This approach avoids cyanide-based processingand, apart from perceived environment benefits, itsaves the capital and operating costs of fine grindingand attendant tailings storage.

The processing plant will be a secure facility becauseof the high grade being processed, with throughput of20t hourly, and based on modules housed in asingle-storey shed. The company is evaluatingtechniques such as ore sorting with colour or X-raysensors, gravity separation and flotation. Theseprocessing options are possible because of the lowtonnage and high grade being planned.

The Talisman Project is blessed with very goodinfrastructure. State Highway 2, just a few kilometresfrom the mine, leads to the major container terminal atPortTauranga, only 80km away. Power lines pass nearby, and 100% renewable electricity from hydroelectric andgeothermal sources can power the mine.

Within lSkm are two substantial and attractivetowns - the mining town ofWaihi (home to the 8MozMartha mine), and the farming service town of Paeroa. The international mining skills shortage will have smallinfluence because highly skilled and well educatedpeople are available and living locally or working inmines overseas and looking to come back to NewZealand.
