Their exceptional artistry and uncanny ensemble playing come from both a family rich in Brazilian musical tradition and from studies with the guitar/lutenist Monina Távora (1921-2011), a disciple of Andrés Segovia. In addition to setting new performance standards, the Assads have played a major role in creating and intro-ducing new music for two guitars. Their virtuosity has inspired a wide range of composers to write for them including Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Radamés Gnattali, Marlos Nobre, Nikita Koshkin, Roland Dyens, Jorge Morel, Edino Krieger and Francisco Mignone.Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad have set the benchmark for all other guitarists by creating a new standard of guitar innovation, ingenuity and expression.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre Launches 42nd Season with Iconic Works On American Treasures and Six World Premieres Featuring Bold Theatrics

Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) launches its 42nd season with six world premieres, including a new work by Princess Grace award-winning choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie. Other works reflect historic eras of Nina Simone, Odetta Holmes, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The season features internationally renowned Ballet Hispánico from New York City, as well as Step Afri-ka! of Washington, D.C., which celebrates the historic connection between South African dance and stepping. DBDT kicks off the season with the 13th Annual DanceAfrica series October 5-6, 2018, at the Moody Performance Hall. Friday and Saturday evening performances feature guest artist Step Afrika! The international touring company jubilantly links the historic tradi-tion between South African dance and stepping, a ritual for African American fraternities and sororities across America. The day-long FREE DanceAfrica Marketplace will be held Saturday, October 6, 2018, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Annette Strauss Square with main-stage performances, fun, food, vendors, and games for the entire family. Bruce Wood Dance Rehearsal Director Joy Bollinger takes DBDT dancers on a jaunt from a duel to a power struggle in choreo-graphing a new work. The dance makes its world premiere during the Director’s Choice series, November 2-4, 2018. The Dallas premi-ere of Bodies as Site of Faith and Protest by choreographer Tommie-Waheed Evans draws on fierce physical language through dance set to iconic speech excerpts by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The strength and stamina of DBDT dancers are showcased as they push through the layers of Lily Cabatu Weiss’ Thrown for a Loop. The Cultural Awareness series, February 15-17, 2019, salutes the “Queen of American Folk Music” and the “High Priestess of Soul.” Two women of courage influenced the world and used their musical voices for change. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Rehearsal Director and Guest Artist Matthew Rushing exemplifies Odetta Holmes’ magical voice by blending soul-stirring movements to folk, gospel, and blues music in the Dallas premiere of ODETTA. Iconic choreographer Dianne McIntyre’s Nina Simone Project epitomizes her regal presence with choreography set to Simone’s signature classical, jazz, and soul fusion. Ballet Hispánico is the special guest artist of the season during the Spring Celebration series, May 17-19, 2019. The nation’s premier Latino dance company shares Latin culture through the lens of contemporary modern dance. Princess Grace award-winning choreogra-pher Darrell Grand Moultrie creates a new work for DBDT that weaves together multiple genres. DBDT nine-year veteran dancer Claude Alexander III examines the influence of social media and pop culture using classical vocabulary as the foundation for choreo-graphing his new contemporary modern dance. DBDT: Encore! takes center stage in its 19th annual Rising Excellence series, April 12-13, 2019, at the Moody Performance Hall. Dr. Lorenzo “Rennie” Harris choreographs a new work fusing Shakespearean narrative with hip-hop vocabulary while mixing hip-hop music with rock, modern, and classical sounds. The Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Family SOLUNA Interna-tional Music & Arts Festival commissions a new work for DBDT: Encore! by emerging choreographer My’kal J. Stromile. The Juilliard School 2018 graduate danced with Encore! while attending Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. DBDT: Encore! Artistic Director Nycole Ray, known for creating exquisite dance art, is developing a new company work.

Dancing Beyond Borders is the perfect setting to indulge in the best of Dallas Black Dance Theatre as DBDT and DBDT: Encore! join together for their annual performance. Both companies perform crowd-pleasing season highlights with meticulous technique and artist-ry. The Fort Worth performance is March 16, 2019, in the W.E. Scott Theatre. The Richardson performance is March 22, 2019, in the Eisemann Center for Performing Arts. As part of the national expansion for the dance company, DBDT presents its sixth New York City sea-son at the Ailey Citigroup Theatre, May 2-3, 2019. Lyric Stage continues its twenty sixth season at the Majestic Theatre February 15-17, 2019 with I DO! I DO!, a musical Valentine to marriage. Performances are February 15 & 16 @ 7:30 PM and February 16 & 17 @ 2:30 PM. Tickets are available @ www.lyricstage.org or by calling 214-871-5000. Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, the creators of THE FANTASTICKS, the world’s longest running musical, adapted Jan de Hartog’s THE FOURPOSTER into a musical celebration of marriage. Specifically, the marriage of Michael and Agnes, a writer and his bride, over the course of their first fifty years of marriage. Written as a star vehicle for theater legends Mary Martin and Robert Preston, the original Broadway production received seven 1966 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical and Best Score. The show begins with Michael and Agnes on their wedding day. Their vows behind them, they look forward to spending the rest of their lives together. We watch as they go through their wedding night jitters, raise a family and negotiate midlife crises. They rediscover how much they really need each other. Then, after 50 years of marriage, the couple leaves their house to the next pair of newlyweds. This touching story of two soul mates navigating the perils of life is set to a tuneful, charming score which includes the hit “My Cup Runneth Over.” Starring in Lyric Stage’s production is a real-life married couple—Broadway veteran and Mesquite native Kristen Beth Williams returns to Lyric Stage with her husband, Broadway actor James Ludwig, to star in I DO! I DO!. Kristen Beth Williams is fresh from her run with Bette Midler in the Broadway revival of HELLO, DOLLY! Lyric Stage audiences will remember Kristen’s critically acclaimed performance as Guinevere in CAMELOT. Her other Broadway credits include PIPPIN, NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT, ANTHING GOES and PROMISES, PROMISES. James Ludwig has been seen on Broadway in SPAMALOT and LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. His Off-Broadway credits include BLUE MAN GROUP, AFTER THE FAIR and JOHN & JEN. Television audiences have seen James in LAW AND ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT, ONE LIFE TO LIVE and LIPSTICK JUNGLE. Penny Ayn Maas is the director and choreographer with music direction by Sheilah Vaughn Walker. Scenic design is by Randel Wright with lighting design by Julie A. Simmons. Bruce Wood Dance Announces Dances from the Heart—A Gala Fundraiser on Valentine’s Weekend, February 15+16, 2019

Bruce Wood Dance proudly presents Dances from the Heart––an exclu-sive, elegant evening of food, dance, live music, and special guests de-signed to make your heart sing. The festivities take place February 15 and 16, 2019 at 7:00 PM at Bruce Wood Dance Gallery, 103 Howell St., Dallas, TX 75207. Monies raised from the events will provide support for BWD’s artistic and educational programming. Each evening is limited to 130 guests. Table sponsorships are available. Individual tickets go on sale January 7 at Dallas Winds Box Office at 214–565–9463. For more information, contact Gayle Halperin at gayle@brucewooddance.org or call 214–298–9212. Curated by artistic director Joy Bollinger, producer Larry Lane, and Broadway music director Joseph Thalken, Dances from the Heart offers classical favorites from Chopin to Sondheim. The program features Thalken on piano—conducting an all–string chamber quintet from

Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts; soprano Alissa Roca; and the beautiful BWD dancers. BWD artistic director Joy Bollinger says, “Dances from the Heart will be an exquisite pairing of piano and strings with the captivating movement of Bruce Wood Dance. Making its Dallas premiere are excerpts from For Buddy created by Bruce Wood® and complemented by selections from the choreography of 2018 Princess Grace awardee Bryan Arias, Kimi Nikai-doh, and more.” The evening kicks off with delicious food and drink in the elegantly transformed Bruce Wood Dance Gallery, followed by the presentation of the 2019 BRUCE Award to philanthropist Rosalee Kimple for her unwavering support of the local dance community. Rosalee Kimple loves dance and dancers. Known to all as Rosie, she and Bruce Wood® were dear friends. From the very beginning, she has been a passionate patron of BWD. She is a champion of Wood’s commitment to artistic excellence and his dedication to mentoring professional dance careers in Dallas–Fort Worth. Returning to Dallas is acclaimed long–time New York composer Joseph Thalken, whose theater and concert works have been performed nationally and internationally. He has composed the scores for the stage musicals Harold & Maude, Was, And The Curtain Rises, and Borrowed Dust on Broadway, and in Dallas for BWD’s Chasing Home. Says Thalken, “We now have a history of working together on several different projects over the past few years, and it is always a true joy to create something new with this extraordinary company.” Alissa Roca, soprano, has been praised for her ethereal coloratura and clear, powerful, expressive voice. Roca received both a Master’s and Diploma from Southern Methodist University and has performed with many Dallas ensembles, including The Dallas Opera, The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and Dallas Winds. BWD has received the following accolades: Best Dance Company by D Magazine in 2017, 2014, 2013; Best of Dallas Voice 2014–2018; and inclusion on every annual Dallas–Fort Worth Top Ten in Dance list since 2011. BWD also was ap-pointed to the 2016–2018 and 2018–2020 Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster. Bruce Wood Dance is made possible by its dedicated patrons and sponsors: Heritage Auctions (HA.com); TACA; Texas Commission on the Arts; National Endowment for the Arts; James+Gayle Halperin Foundation; Donna Wilhelm Family Foundation; Roger Fullington; Ellen Kendrick Creative, Inc.; Lancaster+Associates; Charlie Uniform Tango; Vis-itDallas.com; 2018 Commissioners Circle; and Brian Guilliaux Photography.

Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who

would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return. Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future notifications by e-mailing the list manager.

2. In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any unwanted "Spamming," all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that need to go out, they may be grouped together to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to the list.

If at anytime, you would like to be removed from this e-mail list or if you are a new organization that would like to join, please e-mail the list manager and your request will be acted upon in a timely manner. As always, thank-you for supporting the performing arts in the North Texas area! Regards, David Witherspoon List Manager d-witherspoon@ti.com

Approximate Distribution: over 39,000 and growing!
