syllabusThis workshop is for the beginner tointermediate student who wants to learnportrait painting techniques and how to putmore expression into their portraits, as well asthe experienced student who may want to adda few more tools to their painting toolbox.We will not get into the more advancedtechniques of design, composition, color studiesand thumbnails, but will focus on good paintingtechnique, variation of edges, values, andcolor mixing.

We will be working on portraits with anemphasis on using good reference photos,accurate drawings, values, edges, and paintapplication and techniques.

supply listGOOD REFERENCE PHOTOSPlease make sure you download andread the "Reference Photo Guide"before the workshop.

PAPERGood-quality w/c paper, 140#or heavier. I use 260# and 300# Archescold press.

Sizes: 5x7" or 8x10" for exercises, two11x14" or larger for your portraits

BRUSHESA variety of brushes and sizes. I use roundbrushes (sizes 1, 4, 8, 11, 18) and flatbrushes (sizes 1/2", 11/2", 2"), as well asseveral cheaper, stiffer brushes forscrubbing or lifting. Your brushes don'tneed to be expensive. I use synthetic, aswell as Kolinsky, brushes.

PAINTThese are the colors (or similar) you will want tobring to the workshop:Quinacridone rose or Permanent rose, Raw sienna,Gamboge yellow, Pyrrol red light or Scarlet pyrrol,Phthyalo blue, Cerulean blue, Ultramarine blue,Sepia, Neutral tint.

II also have these colors on my palette, but feel freeto bring your own favorites: Quinacridone magenta,Viridian green, Cadmium red light, Cadmiumorange, Cobalt violet, Ultramarine pink, Burntsienna, Cobalt blue.

I use mostly M. Graham paints, but anyprofessional grade will do. My only (firm) requestis that you throw out those old, dried up blobs ofpaint on your palette and use fresh paint. You willthank me later!

PALETTEPlease bring a palette that is largeenough to mix color. I use an 11 x 15"Frank Webb palette, which allows meplenty of space to mix my paints inthe center with a large brush.
