Military production during World War II
The great uncertainty of all data in war is a peculiar difficulty, because all action
must, to a certain extent, be planned in a mere twilight, which in addition not
infrequently — like the effect of a fog or moonshine — gives to things exaggerated dimensions and unnatural appearance.
Carl von Clausewitz
Amateurs study tactics;
professionals study logistics

Without supplies neither a general nor a soldier is good for anythingClearchus, 401 BC.
Above - View from the cruiser HMS Sheffield as she sails on convoy duty through the waters of the Arctic Ocean. In the background are merchant ships of the convoy. The image was taken during the twilight of the arctic winter—the short time each day that the sun is seen during winter near the pole. In the foreground is the silhouette of a lookout using a telescope.

The 'Hurban' Armoured train located in Zvolen, Slovakia. It is not the original, but a true replica used in a film. Only two preserved original cars exist; they are stored nearby in the railway repair shops at Zvolen, where they were produced in 1944

Starting Leaders The highest form of generalship is to defeat the enemy’s plans; the next best is to keep the enemy’s forces divided; the next best is to attack the enemy’s army in the field; and the worst policy is to besiege walled cities.
Sun Tzu
Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter.
Winston Churchill
In Europe, before the outbreak of the war, the
Allies had significant advantages in both
population and economics. In 1938, the Western Allies (United
Kingdom, France, Poland and British Dominions) had a 30 percent larger
population and a 30 percent higher gross
domestic product than the European Axis
(Germany and Italy); if colonies are included, it
then gives the Allies more than a 5:1 advantage in
population and nearly 2:1 advantage in GDP.

Though the Allies' economic and population advantages were largely mitigated during the
initial rapid blitzkrieg attacks of Germany and Japan, they became the decisive factor by 1942.
